Masskara 2004

I was in Bacolod City last October15-19, for the Silver Masskara Festival. I was some sort of a homecoming for me, since I haven’t been to Bacolod for almost two years already.

It was a great opportunity for me to meet with my old friends, schoolmates, and relatives. below are some of my photos.

There are a lot of things, foods, and pastime that is associated with Bacolod. Can you name them? Here’s some:

Cockfighting – It is very undeniable that Bacolod city is home of the best gamefowls or manok pansabong. In Bacolod City alone, there are 3 large cockfighting arenas. One in the southern part of Bacolod, anohter one in the Reclamation area, and another one in the eastern side of the city. No airline flight is complete without a gamefowl cargo in it.

Barquillos & Piaya – The trademark delicacy of Bacolod. Barquillos is perfect for ice creams. Another variety of this is called “Barquiron”. It’s barquillos filled with polvoron. Piaya is a sweet delicacy made of honey, molasses, and other ingredients. Another popular version of this foodstuff is the Ube Piaya from Bong bong’s Pasalubong Shop.

Inasal - Grilled chicken. It is chicken thigh marinated in honey, brown sugar, calamansi, ginger, and other secret ingredients. A lot of people are trying to create their own version of this dish, but only a true Ilonggo can do it.

Masskara Festival – A unique festival, featuring beautifully-created masks celebreated every October. It’s the next best thing after Rio de Janeiro’s Mardi Gras.

Cleanliness & Orderliness – Bacolod City has been voted countless times as the country’s cleanes and greenest city. In fact, it is already in the DILG’s hall of fame as the cleanest city of the Philippines.
