MassKara Festival opens today

The 26th MassKara Festival will open at 8:30 a.m. today at the Bacolod public plaza, and will coincide with the start of the Bacolod City Division Athletic and Cultural Meet.

The festival opening will be keynoted by Chairman Bayani Fernando of the Metro Manila Development Authority.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia will officially open the festival immediately after Luisito Escalona, assistant schools division superintendent, declares the start of the division athletic and cultural meet, a press release from organizers said.

Festival director Eli Francis Tajanlangit said simultaneous opening ceremonies will be held with the Department of Education as part of the objective to reposition the festival and make it more family-oriented, a press release from the MassKara Festival office said yesterday.

The presence of the athletes and the students from the different districts under the city division also highlights the involvement of the young people in the festival, Tajanlangit added.

“We want the festival to be known as a ‘festival for the family’ and not just a drinking celebration,” he said.

The opening ceremonies will be preceded by a parade from the Capitol Lagoon, that will be participated in by boy and girl scouts, athletes, MassKara Queen Candidates and dancers, towards the public plaza where the program will start at 8:30 a.m.*
