World Pyro Olympics is RP’s event of the year
The World Pyro Olympics on Dec. 26-30 at the Esplanade in Pasay City is as much a celebration of the great tradition of fireworks as it is a pyrotechnic competition.
Fireworks are a centuries-old Chinese invention and began more as a religious belief than source of entertainment. The sound that a firecracker made was so loud that the Chinese believed them to fend off evil spirits. This is the reason why New Year celebrations are always marked by the fireworks or by making loud noises with trumpets or by banging on pots and pans.
Today, pyrotechnics has come a long way from its origins in terms of innovations. At the WPO, the Philippines single largest event of the year, will showcase some of the newest developments in the pyrotechnic industry such as nautical shells that explode over the surface of the water (which can only be seen up close) and combination shells that mix several effects together in one blast.
This mammoth event is brought to you by the Department of Tourism, the Department of Transport and Communication, the Philippine Tourism Authority, Philippine Reclamation Authority, the City of Pasay, SM, Jollibee and Pepsi.
