Meet the Aliwan Contignents:
Lumad Basakanon, Sinulog Festival
Cebu City
One of the contingents to watch for in the upcoming Aliwan Fiesta is the group Lumad Basakanon of the Sinulog Festival. The Basak, San Nicolas-based troupe has been the Sinulog Festival Free Interpretation Category overall champion for the year 2004, and 2005. And if not because of some technicalities, they could have also won this year’s Free Interpretation overall championship.

Lumad Basakanon, clad in their gold costumes, bagged the top prize for the 2006 Sinulog Festival Best in Costume and and Best in Musicality. They also won the 2nd prize for the Street Dance Competition.

This is the first time that the Cebu City’s Sinulog Festival is fielding a contingent for the Aliwan Fiesta.

Bad Trip

In unity there is strength
I was able to catch a glimpse of the Philippine Dragonboat team practicing at the Manila Bay. The team has brough honor and glory to the Philippines, when it swept all the gold medals at the 26th Southeast Asian Games, here in Manila. The Dragonboat, or the Traditional Boat race is just one of the two events whose gold medals were all won by a single country at the SEA Games: The Philippines. Another event was chess, which was swept by Vietnam.

Molo Church: The Feminist Church of Visayas
The Molo District of Iloilo City is a former Chinese enclave. Originally called Parian, Molo is home to one of the country’s feminist Catholic churches. It is just one of the few churches in the country where the patron saint is a female.

Its patron saint is St. Anne, or Santa Ana to the locals.
The church is a blend of Gothic and Rennaisance architecture. It’s interior is funadametally Renaissance, with all its elaborate decor. While it’s exteriors are Gothic-inspired.

Along the aisle of the church stands sixteen life-sized female saint images.
The present Molo Church was constructed in 1869, and has withstood countless earthquakes, typhoons, and wars.

St. Anne Church is a 10-minute jeepney ride from the Iloilo City proper. There are daily boat trips and airline flights from Manila to Iloilo, and vice versa. There are also hourly ferry trips from Iloilo to Bacolod, and vice versa.
