Aliwan Fiesta 2006: Lutong Macau?

Posted on May 2, 2006

When this year’s Aliwan Fiesta streetdance winners were announced, several people doubted the credibility of the results. Some said that at least two judges came from Cebu. Others say that they just simply gave Cebu a chance, since Iloilo has been a perennial winner.

Here’s an e-mail I received:

I doubt the Aliwan Results. There are 2 Cebuano judges. It is possible that their scores have greatly affected the reults. Do you think these Cebuano judges will vote for the Iloilo Festivals? Definitely not. I’m sure they scored the Sinulog higher compared to Dinagyang, or other Iloilo festivals.

My comment:

I was there at the Aliwan but I do not know who the judges were. There are judges stationed at the Quirino Grandstand, and Rajah Sulayman Fountain, and CCP Complex. And assuming that there are indeed two judges who favored the Sinulog, and lets jsut say that there are 2 judges stationed in every judging area, do you think that these 2 Cebuano judges can influence the total scores? 2 out of 6 judges at that??? I dont think so… Think of Mathematics. And finally, do you think that these judges, would gamble their credibility just because of the Festival?

Lumad Basakanon, Sinulog Festival
Lumad Basakanon, of Cebu’s Sinulog Festival

I have seen all the performances, except for the Pamulinawen Festival of Laoag. But between the Sinulog and Dinagyang, I guess it’s very clear who won the contest.

The festival’s over. The decision is final. Instead of fighting against each other, why not just unite and be proud of our culture as a Filipino nation? Forget crab mentality.

all i can say is “let’s be humble in victory, ang gracious in defeat.” :D

    *typo, “..and GRACIOUS in defeat”

  3. mike on May 2nd, 2006 1:52 pm

dinagyang festival put up a good fight…next year will be tough..just make sure that next year judges are not from cebu.fair competition.

  4. mel on May 2nd, 2006 5:10 pm

oo, dapat mga foreigners ang judges para walang magrereklamo na lutong macau daw. lagi namang ganyan basta talunan, “sour graping,” :D let’s just wait and see next year’s Aliwan Fiesta…

  5. thirsty on May 2nd, 2006 5:21 pm

    ITS SOOOOOOO UNFAIR…..
pwede namang zero as in itlog ang score ng dinagyang sa 2 judges na yun kaya natalo sila…..
    cebuano loser!!!!

  7. julius on May 3rd, 2006 2:12 pm

im a delagate of the aliwan festival 06.. pamulinawen festival of laoag city… i saw the performances of d different contingents, dinagyang, pasalamat, pamulinawen, babailan, sinulog, damili, panagbenga, kahilyawan, padang-padang and many more… i think sinulog festival of cebu deserved their victory… c;mon.. we are all winners of this, lets just respect the judges’ vote…. MABUHAY ALIWAN FISTA!!!!

    By: Victor Andrew-Ilonggo

Please lets accept the outcome of the festival..

We respect the judges descision. But to the organizers, like we do in Dinagyang, we invite judges whose credibility are enough and satisfactory. we dont have to shout on this blogging for justice. Anyway we all enjoyed the fun during the Aliwan. Ganyan palagi ang pinoy. So instead of fightng over a bunch of monkey, lets instead support our tourisms and festival. Mabuhay ang aliwan, Long live Iloilo, Long live Philippines!!!!

  10. jamby on May 3rd, 2006 9:50 pm

Iloilo festivals have been reaping awards for three years. so what if Sinulog, a first-timer ended Iloilo’s winning streak? those who gave harsh comments against the grand champion are clearly sourgraping and have no sense of sportsmanship. stop that insinuation, crab mentality and move on. Sinulog festival is now the ultimate festival in the Philippines but has been the biggest and grandest ever since pa noh.

  11. ranz on May 4th, 2006 1:10 pm

In fairness, mas maganda naman talaga yong sa cebu…. yes i admit maganda yong sa iloilo but the judges have to decide for the best and thats the sinulog

  12. CHEXXXTER on May 5th, 2006 5:17 pm

Im a member of CADENCE DBC LUMAD BASAKANON’S instrumentalists…
Its a great feeling indeed…

  13. julz on May 8th, 2006 11:12 am

ALIWAN Festival was indeed a great success!! although we onlty ranked 6th place im sooooo hapi dat ive been a part of this annual celebration of beauty, parade, and street pageantry!! imagne we bagged 6th on the dance competition, 2nd runner up on the Reyna ng Aliwan, and Best float (1st place) , pinaiwan pa nga ng CCP ung float namin kc ipaparade nila… its onli laoag city that was able to get awards from the 3 category!!! kya if there wud have been a Grand Champion eh kami na sana un.. pero bragging aside,. its fun that i was able to join such jaw breaking and nerve wrecking event. I was able to make new friends from Cebu (SINULOG FESTIVAL dancers) and sum from marikina (they even beg me to give them my necklace which i used during the dance showdown) and iloilo..! lets preserve the tradition of our country’s culture, sumthing that we can be proud of!! BONGGA LAOAG!! MABUHAY ALIWAN!!!!!

  14. xxx on May 8th, 2006 11:28 am

julz, taga laoag ka? im mark from paranaque, im living witness…. i saw all the performances. from the first to the last contingent… i admire the power moves of the DINAGYANG FESTIVAL,,,, the colorful costumes of the PADANG PADANG festival… but what realy amazed me was the spirit and Eye-popping routine of the PAMULINAWEN FESTIVAL,, among all the performers from the different fiesta’s of the country, only them gave a never boring dance, imagine from start to end u can see them smiling!! and those thrilling basket tosses! WOW!.. im from UST, eh mas matataas pa ang throwings nila kesa sa cheer squad ng skul namin.. bravo!! makapunta nga diyan! i-tour moko ah, can i get ur cp number, hek hek.. kaya nung i was waiting for the result eh i was shocked na pang anim lng kau despite of ur powerful performance. but i salute u guys, u did well,, pero congrats din sa mga taga CEBU, sa sunulog kc infairness malinis tlga ung moves nila although di ganun ka powerful ang steps… sorry, dats my personal comment eh.. we all have different perceptions naman…ciao

  15. ddcage on May 8th, 2006 12:50 pm

when lumad basakanon did not win the sinulog this year because of the so called technicalities, hindi namin inaway ang taga ilo-ilo (pintados) o alin man sa mga winning contingents. bakit hindi matanggap ng mga hambog na dinagyang na tapos na ang aliwan 2006. huwag na kayong sumali kung ayaw nyong magpatalo. “BITTER LOCKED” next time.

Iloilo humbly accepts defeat in Aliwan 2006
    By Maricar M. Calubiran

Ilonggos indeed know how to accept defeat. They humbly acceded to their fate in the recently concluded 2006 Aliwan Festival with Dinagyang Festival ranked only second to Sinulog Festival of Cebu even if some quarters are pushing the members of the delegation to file a protest.

There are som contribuiting factors kung bakit di nakakasayaw ng maayos ang mga dancers, and we all know that we shud be ready for whatever circumstances those factors may bring,,

di sana pinalabas niyo sa network niyo… im sorry but i agree sa sinabi ni zaldy, the dance perse is not the basis of the judges descision…hindi na sana ito tinawag na aliwan fiesta kung hindi battle of the countries biggest festivals to.. lets say na the delivered a good dance, were they able to deliver it well, im talking about grace, poise, stamina and energy, im not degrading HALAD, but TAPOS na ang Aliwan 2006, wats left to do now is to accept whatever it is to accept….

  33. menggay on May 23rd, 2006 2:19 am

I just wanted to share this… I had an experienced how the iloggos accepted their defeat and all i can say is, it wasn’t nice… after the aliwan festival we were invited to go to Isabela to dance, knowing that they will also be there to perform. during the event in isabela they perform first and then we were next, the dancers of iloilo were at the entrance and stayed there to watch, that’s what i thought but when we were preparing for our performance we heard insults, and when we started our dance they literary blocked our way and we had a hard time making our entrance. i have nothing against the ilonggos. i had read so many articles about the aliwan festival and most of them sided the ilonggos. Did they really humbly accepted their deafeat?
sana maliwanagan ang mga dancers ng dinagyan na hindi away ang sagot sa problema nila. natalo rin kami before kami sumali sa aliwan, and like them nag expect din kami na manalo noon, madaming rin naging issues.
sa tingin ko mas maswerte ang dancers ng iloilo kasi well supported sila and mas edukado sila kay sa amin. most of our dancers and instrumentalist ay hindi naka tapos and unemployed, pahirapan pa ang pag punta namin sa manila. alam ko na pinag hirapan nila yung sayaw nila, akala ba ng dinagyan na hindi kami nahirapan? hindi lang nila alam kung anong hirap ang dinaanan namin during aliwan festival. na challenge kami we were pushed to our limits. it was a miracle na walang masamang nangyari sa amin habang sumasayaw.
na tapos na ang contest hindi ba pwede maging mag kaibigan na lang ang mga participant? in the first place, wala namang rason makipag away.
lastly, i just wanted to ask the dinagyan members, sumali ba kayo para ipakita sa madlang people na kayo ang pinaka magaling, o sumali kayo para e offer ang sayaw nyo kay Senior Sto. Niño?

  34. James on May 23rd, 2006 8:37 am

Menggay, sabi mo marami kang mga articles na nababasa that sided sa Ilonggos, the saw that there was prejudice on the decision that Sinulog will win the contest by any means.

    From : http://thenewstoday.info/2006/05/03/dinagyang.pintados.robbed.in.aliwan.festival.html

Most experts did not agree that Dinagyang and the defending champion Pintados de Pasi wound up only second runner-up or third overall to the new champion Sinulog Festival of Cebu City.

There were reports that the judges were allegedly “intimidated” by the presence of Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ace Durano who is a former congressman from Cebu and who allegedly secretly “lobbied” for Sinulog Festival to bag this year’s overall championship from Pintados de Pasi or any other contingents for that matter.

As secretary of the DOT, Durano has the complete itinerary of festivals all over the world, including the world-famous Pasadena Parade in California and there were reports that the Philippines has been invited to perform in some international festivals this year.

Did Secretary Durano use his influence to dethrone Pintados de Pasi?

Many of those present during the competition of 28 festivals all over the country at the Quirino Grandstand swore the performance of Sinulog Festival was a repeat of their last year’s choreography unlike the Pintados de Pasi and Dinagyang Festival, two groups from Panay island that enjoyed enormous financial support from their respective local government units (LGUs) and private sponsors, not to mention the all-out backing of their foundations.

This is not the first time that Secretary Durano has been accused of malfeasance in the performance of his duties and obligations as DOT chief.

Last year, he caused a furor among city officials here when the DOT committed a sin of omission by not including the Dinagyang Festival in the calendar of activities in its posters and campaign here and abroad.

The huge lapse even prompted the provincial board in Negros Oriental to declare Durano as persona non grata, an earthshaking event which was nearly repeated in Iloilo City had it not been for the leniency of Mayor Jerry P. Treñas who did not want to add fuel to the conflagration.

I know that everything that I will write here will now be water under the bridge, but there are lessons that must be learned from the recent Aliwan Festival.

But it is now difficult to file a protest because doing so might jeopardize our relationship with the prime festival mover Manila Broadcasting Company which has been diligently promoting the festival these past years sans substantial financial assistance from the government.

And besides, we have nothing to prove anymore as the audience believed the Ilonggo festival groups are the more artistic and creative, not to mention their alacrity and enthusiasm which was manifested when they introduced additional styles and techniques in running away with the runner-up plums.

We just hope that in next year’s Aliwan Festival, Sec. Durano will be prudent enough to at least set aside his bias and watch out his body language so that people will not think that he is applying an arm-twisting tactic to favor a certain festival. Just a suggestion, no offense meant.

  35. Zaldy on May 23rd, 2006 9:00 am

Ganyan talaga dito sa atin noh may nanalo at may na daya walang matatalo so paano na to next year example lang ha if matatalo nanaman kayo so ibang protest nanaman…..

  36. James on May 23rd, 2006 11:11 am

lumad basakanon already had accepted invitation form dipolog before the aliwan took place. it would be on june 10 this year.

it would be very unkind for us to cancel the engagement.

ganyan na ba talaga katindi ang desire ninyo na mapanood ang lumad basakanon? please just wait when the right time comes…..

pero kung gusto nyong mag sponsor ng plane tickets from dipolog to manila, then who are we to refuse…..

  48. jack on May 27th, 2006 10:27 pm

since the 80’s, nakapag tour na ako sa mga places kung saan merong mga festivals. that includes of course ati-atihan, dinagyang, marajao-karajao, lanzones, maskara, pinta flores, and sinulog.

among those i mentioned, maskara and pinta flores are becoming more colorful while lanzones, marajao-karajao and sinulog are getting more exciting every year.

the others lose their identity. they tend to perform jazzy steps while wala namang jazz festival sa bansa, and ang beat nila hindi na iyong original or basic ng kanilang festival kundi patterned from techno or disco music na kulang na lang ay lyrics.

i don’t intend to offend anybody but this is just an honest comment.

we’re talking about philippine festivals, people! LET’S BE REAL!

Well the judges have spoken and the Ilonggos humbly accepted their fate. Let’s leave it that way.

To the organizers of Aliwan Fiesta, please don’t invite judges from places who have festivals joining the Aliwan fiesta. Regionalistic counts.

To the people (choreographers, cultural workers, etc) who are invited to judge in the Aliwan Fiesta, please decline the offer, if you have a festival joining in the competition OUT OF DELICADEZA. SO THAT THE PEOPLE WATCHING THE COMPETITITON COULD SAY THAT THIS GROUP WON FAIRLY AND SQUARELY.

I hope this will not happen in next years Aliwan Fiesta. Lets move on.

i disagree with you, cute na mario gomez.

    venus,
please don’t generalize the dinagyang. dinagyang is already an institution here in iloilo, like the sinulog in cebu. there are alot of groups who are devouted joining the said festival in honor of sr. sto. nino. that was only one tribe you encountered.
my apology if that happens to your group. let’s stop bashing each other. remember that dinagyang, sinulog and ati-atihan were all celebrated in honor of sr. sto. nino.
let us not add fuel to the fire.

    peace!!!

my apologies for being so general about the dinagyang.

  61. R2 on June 13th, 2006 1:40 pm

    Hi Venus!

Nice to see your reply. Last saturday I went at Quirino Grandstand and I talked to a teacher in-charge ng Tribu Ilonganon regarding sa sinabi mong nangyari sa Isabela. Kahit sila nga nagsabi na naipit din sila and they don’t want also to bash Sinulog since they were also visitors in Isabela.

    Peace!!!

in fairness talaga, the festivals of the BIG THREE (CEBU, ILOILO and AKLAN) is for honoring SR. STO. NINO.. so prara matapos na po ang lahat.. sa ating mga kapatid na CEBUANO at ILONGGO.. let us all be reminded that WE ARE PERFORMING FOR THE GLORY OF SR. STO. NINO.. NOT FOR POPULARITY OR FOR THE PRIZE.. THAT IS WHY LAHAT NG FESTIVALS THAT GLORIFY SR. STO. NINO MADE IT TO THE TOP! O DI BAH! FAIR PO TAYO LAHAT SA MATA NG DIYOS. WAG PO NATN KALIMUTAN YAN.. 74. tagacebu on June 25th, 2006 8:42 pm

hahaha. to cebuanos, we didn’t even know cebu brought home the bacon from that Aliwan or whatever festival that is. you know, Cebuanos, or Pinoys for that matter, have that “festival complex” (perhaps that would be an addition to a long list of psychological disorders listed by the American Psychiatrist Association). we have bangus, dalupapa (a giant squid), lanzones, lechon festivals, and with 7,107 islands, i can’t wait to see a bayabas festival very soon. in cebu alone, we have like 40 festivals the whole year round, from tostado to cassava. and the sinulog is the grandest of all!
but that’s not the point. i’d like to comment on dinagyang’s sourgraping. because i think that’s a very tribal attitude, tribal as in promdi or barriotic or parochial. even the spreading of rumors that two of the judges came from cebu speaks of someone “na waay urbanidad.”
i have high respect for ilongos (my mom and my wife are) but this is the first time i saw in your blogs ilongos not accepting defeat. perhaps you are living on your reputation as “ginapiko, ginapala”?
last january, i had the chance to interview romel flogen, passi’s choreographer when it joined the sinulog in cebu. if memory serves me right, he used to be a mormon before he converted to Catholicism because of a personal miracle he has experienced — every rehearsal, his group would discover missing Sto. Nino icons. Today, he has 120 images of him. miracle. that is the essence of the Sinulog.
lumad basakanon’s victory is really no big deal for cebuanos. for us the biggest winner is the almost 400 year old original icon of the Sto Nino, the symbol of the first Christianization in Asia which is in our keeping.
if the victorious do not make a fuss about it, there’s no reason for losers to cry over spilled milk. because you end up losers twice over…..
So where does that leave us? It means better luck next time. You have one year to polish your dance routines, innovate, and perhaps pray more!
one more comment: whatever newspaper or publication which published that “lutong macau” rumor must have exercised responsible journalism……
Mabuhi ang Sugbuanon! Go, go go, Sugbu!

  75. Mark on June 26th, 2006 1:01 pm

    tagacebu,

Just for your info, romel flogen is also the choreographer of Tribu Ilonganon.

Choreography is the art of arranging dance movements for performance.

    Mag-aral ka nga muna!

I know that Sinulog is the grandest festival all over the country.
But Dinagyang is a festival with excellent folk choreography, this was tagged by The National Commision for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

  79. tagacebu on July 3rd, 2006 7:58 am

    tagaCebu,

If you don’t know what is the mandates of NCCA. Here are they :
    - Formulate policies for the development of culture and the arts
    - To coordinate & implement the overall policies and program of attached agencies on the development of culture and arts as stated under Executive Order No. 80
    - Administer the National Endowment Fund for Culture and the Arts
    - Encourage artistic creation within a climate of artistic freedom
    - Develop and promote the Filipino national culture and arts; and
    - Preserve Filipino cultural heritage

You didn’t also know that your festival is also a part of your culture and consider it to be an art, that is why you neglect the importance of NCCA.
You will now understand what you are saying. I am not criticizing your festival nagbibigay lang ako ng paliwanag. Sinabi ko pa nga that your festival is the grandest.

kagagaling lang po namin sa tagbilaran for the sandugo festival performance noong sunday, july 23rd. nandoon din ang ibat-ibang tribes like sinanduloy of tangub and dinagyang of iloilo. ang ipinagtataka ko po ay napakabait at napaka friendly ng mga taga dinagyang, which was extremely opposite to what i perceived them to be. hindi pala sila iyong tribu ilongot na ipinadala sa aliwan.

    FYI.
Do you know who are the Ilongots?
Ilongot - Traditionally located at the junction of the Sierra Madre and the Caraballo mountains in the headwaters of the Cagayan, Tabayon, and Conwap rivers in Luzon are three groups of people: (1) Italon, found in the headwaters of the Cagayan River, (2) Engongot (Ipagi), found northwest of the coast of Baler, and (3) Abaka (Ibilao), living in southwestern Nueva Vizcaya. All three are known collectively as the Ilongot.

  104. tonz of iligan city on October 2nd, 2006 4:41 pm

NCAA so on and so forth…

u keep on saying that NCAA has tagged Dinagyang as the festival of excellent folk choreography…well ok lang naman yan kasi any CHOREOGRAPHY can jst be FABRICATED and COINED…but i also like to say that the NCAA is jst there to regulate of what is native or modern, original or fabricated…and the NCAA does not include the festivals themselves kasi the festivals are regulated by the LGUs who made them… and also DINAGYANG is a copy of the original ATI ATIHAN FESTIVAL OF AKLAN…jst a reminder of the truth ILONGGOS!!!

  105. tonz of iligan city on October 2nd, 2006 4:49 pm

inaabangan ko kasi ang performance ng TRIBU LUMAD BASAKANON sa Aliwan and they really did great. And sad to say this but most of the people in Manila do not knw other festivals other than ATI ATIHAN kaya they always savor with the DINAGYANG which is just a copy of the original ATI ATIHAN FESTIVAL OF AKLAN…

kaya ng dumating ang mga taga CEBU, they were shocked that there is another Festival and style na mas maganda pa than DINAGYANG…and also they do not know that there are still from MINDANAO na magagaling specially from the REGION 10 and the CARAGA REGION…kaya lang the budget constraints do not allow them to join the ALIWAN…we always join the SINULOG FESTIVAL to pay tribute to the STO. NINO DE CEBU…who gave MINDANAOANS miracle since we joined the SINULOG…

VIVA PIT SENYOR!!! SEE U AGAIN NEXT SINULOG!!!

ILIGAN CITY, CAMIGUIN, TANGUB, OZAMIZ CITY, SURIGAO CITY, PLACER OF SURIGAO WILL BE THERE!!!

  106. Chris on October 3rd, 2006 8:24 am

    tonz of iligan city,

NCAA - National Collegiate Athletic Association

  107. rey of martirez on October 4th, 2006 3:52 am

ok…we know that NCAA exists…however i guess if i’m not mistaken, when people celebrate a festival, they don’t think about the NCAA thing…well if you(Chris) really have high regards with that commission, i respect that however i don’t agree with you upon saying ” Nagpapakilala ka pa kung tagasaan ka…pinapahiya mo ang lugar nyo.”.. just a reminder: expressing an opinion doesn’t degrade the place where that person comes. we may not agree to that person but that is not enough why you would not respect his opinion…
regarding sinulog 2006, hehehe…it is a tough competition…it is always a slap on our face, coz people from other provinces always win…but come to think of it, the contingents from local baranggays with less support battling against contingents who are the best in the city/province with all the support given, obviously you know who would be the winner…some people say it should not an excuse for not winning. yes it is not an excuse for it is more than winning in the festival, it is way of paying homage, a dance for our Sr. Sto. Nino…
Lutong Macao ang topic? hehehe..ewan ko ba, basta sa pagkapanalo ng Sinulog festival, congrats…kung natalo man sila, i’m pretty sure they would accept their defeat and learn from mistakes (just like what happened to Lumad Basakanon sa sinulog 2006). that should be the cebuano spirit: learn from mistakes, don’t blame others, accept defeat, learn where you stand and fight again…kung may lutong macau man na nangyari at mangyayari, yung sa taas na lang ang bahala sa kanila…okies?..
ang dali ng panahon no?? december is fast approaching, so by January, Sinulog na naman..maglalaban na naman ang mga magagaling..hehehe…just some comments on sinulog 2006…
yung contingent from Samar at Passi have very, very great choreography at dance steps….yung sa bohol na man very clean ang performance…for iligan, wow ang ganda ng part yung may wave from the left side upon facing the stage..my friend and i both agree that iligan should have won the best in musicality(that is my opinion). napakaganda ng musicality…pintados de passi, first time kung nakita ang ganoong performance and as expected, ganda ng choreography…camiguin, clean execution, very good in maximizing the stage, ganda ng steps kasi ang bilis… kung ok lang sa moderator, you can check the videos in youtube.com. just search for sinulog 2006 presentation 1 or check this link:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=H4e0DMsKAqQ

  108. Chris on October 5th, 2006 3:54 pm

    to rey,

walang kinalaman ang NCAA sa mga festival. di alam ni tonz kung anong pinagsasabi. ang ibig nya sigurong sabihin NCCA - National Commission for Culture in the Arts. Yes, I have high regards with this commission.
I dont want to bridge gap between places and people.

Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City strengthened its reputation as the country’s premiere festival after it was voted the best tourism event by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP).

Dinagyang beat other festivals vying for the prestigious awards, a retribution of sorts.

  113. Mark on October 10th, 2006 12:35 pm

    bumawi ang Dinagyang! :)

    may magrereklamo pa kaya?

btw, ATOP gave the award last Oct. 6, 2006, Friday during the culmination of its annual convention in Koronadal City.

I THINK NOWADAYS, SINULOG FESTIVAL IS THE BIGGEST FESTIVAL IN THE PHILIPPINES AND U WILL SEE THAT IN THEIR PREPARATION AND ALSO HOW THEY CULMINATE THE EVENT…IT IS EVEN SEEN WORLDWIDE…RIGHT NOW, IT IS THE FESTIVAL THAT REMINDS THE TRUE FILIPINO HOSPITALITY IN the FILIPINO FIESTA…i hope no one ever again compares each festival to the other coz WHAT THE SINULOG IS DOING REPRESENTS THE BAYANIHAN VALUES of the FILIPINO…LETS BE PROUD OF OUR COUNTRY and LET’S BE PROUD OF THE SINULOG…im not even from CEBU but i know how SINULOG helps in putting the country in the TOURISM MAP of ASIA.

  120. diyandi on January 20th, 2007 1:13 pm

ATOP??? its jst an organization and does not represent the whole industry…i think the ppl of the country knows SINULOG more than any other festival in the country…IT IS THE MOST POPULAR FESTIVAL IN THE PHILIPPINES…SINULOG FESTIVAL…the festival of the Filipino people and not jst of any organization…

  121. MARDIE GRACIA on January 20th, 2007 1:17 pm

I HOPE THE DINAGYANG PPL WOULD JST KEEP QUIET COZ no one is against you…you are jst being SO BOASTFUL…that is a clear value that does not do any good with any ILONGGO…i know many ILONGGOS who are so boastful…I HOPE UR FESTIVAL DOES NOT REPRESENT BOASTFULNESS…

Mayor unhappy over few Sinulog delegates
    01/19/2007 | 08:14 AM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us Signs that not all is well in this year’s Sinulog festival are showing after Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña started pushing for improvements for next year’s celebration.

Sun-Star Cebu (sunstar.com.ph) said Friday that Osmeña wants the event repackaged after he noted a drop in contingents from out of town.

“There are lots of defects here… The organizers are looking inward and are only thinking about themselves, they have to shape up. These can all be corrected but I have no more time to do all these, it has to be the organizers and the vice mayor,” he said.

The mayor pointed out the defects in the preparation for the Sinulog, including the lack of funding for contingents from outside Cebu.

But organizers blamed the drop in attendance to this year’s being an election year — local governments are reportedly being more careful in spending to send contingents to Cebu.

Osmeña admitted he is partly at fault since he was busy with the preparations for the recently concluded Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit.

Yet he said the Sinulog Foundation Inc. should have taken charge of some innovations in the grand parade.

From 10 out-of-town contingents last year, only six registered to compete in this Sunday’s grand parade. A contingent from Surigao City will also join, but only as guest performers.

But Vice Mayor Michael Rama, who chairs the Sinulog Foundation Inc., said the organizers did their best in inviting the out-of-town contingents to join.

Sinulog executive director Ricky Ballesteros and project director Dolly Suzara also attended the festivals in other provinces to personally invite officials to join the Sinulog.

“We already anticipated that there will be fewer contingents because it’s an election year, officials are very careful in spending government funds. And there were also calamities and typhoons that affected some of these provinces,” Rama said.

Contingents from other provinces spend at least P500,000 to go to Cebu to perform during the Sinulog, with some spending up to P1 million.

Osmeña said promotional materials featuring out-of-town contingents and nationwide coverage of the parade should be improved.

Offering the out-of-town groups exposure here and abroad will encourage them to join the festival every year, the mayor said.

“We’re good at organizing but we have to have a strong reorientation in showcasing the different towns in the country through the Sinulog. We have to refocus and repackage it. We have to realize that if we don’t get better, we’ll be sliding backwards,” he said.

After last year’s Sinulog, the mayor commissioned a professional photographer to take photos of the lead dancers of all out-of-town contingents.

The photos were used in promotional posters and calendars, and were also featured in Mabuhay, the in-flight magazine of Philippine Airlines.

Next year, Osmeña said, he will work to repackage the Sinulog and is looking at the possibility of transferring the parade to the South Road Properties. - GMANews.TV

DINAGYANG is the only festival in the world chosen by the UNITED NATIONS to promote its millenium development program. and the only festival invited to UN summit in NEPAL this year.

THE ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK cited dinagyang festival for ‘BEST PRACTICE’ in govt.-private sector partnership in countryside development.

  127. bonok2 on April 30th, 2007 12:35 pm

  129. mhel on May 8th, 2007 2:43 pm

    bonok2,

  130. mhel on May 8th, 2007 3:11 pm

    BONOK2
SUMALI NA ANG ILOILO SA SINULOG 2006, PINTADOS DE PASI, 1ST TIME LANG SUMALI, 1ST RUNNER-UP AGAD, PRODUKTO SILA NG DINAGYANG. KAYO PABALIK-BALIK NA SA SINULOG WALA PANG NAPATUNAYAN!!! SA SINULOG 2008 ABANGAN NIYO ANG PINTADOS DE PASI KUNG PAANO KAYO LAMPASUHIN ULIT!! BAKA DI NA KAYO SUMALI SA ALIWAN!!!

SINASABI MO NA KUNG LAHAT NA TOP 5 SA SINULOG MAY PANALO SA ALIWAN?, PASOK PA RIN ANG ILOILO SA TOP 3 SA ALIWAN, DAHIL ANG PINTADOS DE PASI NASA TOP 2 SA SINULOG. KAYA LANG, WALA NG ENTRY ANG ILOILO SA ALIWAN 2008!!

  131. bonok2 on May 9th, 2007 5:03 pm

hoi!!! anong patunayan? FYI.. since 1990 upto 2005 hindi lumabas sa top5 ang bonok2 sa sinulog.. naging 2005 and 2006 champion sila sa kadayawan.. GUEST PERFORMER NALANG SILA SA 2007 SINULOG at baka d mo po alam 2005 sinulog 1st runner nga ang pintados ni passi pero CHAMPION PO ANG CAMIGUIN AT ANG CHOREOGRAPHER ANG RESIDENT CHOREOGRAPHER NG BONOK2 d kase sila sumali ng 2005 kaya camiguin hired him!!! alam yan ng lumad! baka d mo lang alam world folklore grand champion sila ng 1990 d pa uso ang aliwan at mas maraming sumali held in pasay city parin… sabihn nyo nalang ayaw nyo tlga aminin na nag umpisa na kayong mawala!
