San Agustin Church
Posted on July 7, 2006
One of the baroque churches here in the Philippines is the San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila. The church was built in 1587, and was incribed as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site in 1993.
Church has a museum which houses the remains of National Artist Juan Luna. It (the museum) also features several prieceless ivory collections as well as emerald and diamond studded monstrance and chalice.
Last June 24, I went inside the museum and had an oppurtunity to get inside the Sala de la Capitulacion. It is right in this room where the document for the surrender of Manila to the United States was drafted. Also can be found inside the museum were rare books published by the Agustinans. I also had the oppurtunity, for the first time, to view the church interior from the choirloft. The view was magnificent. The choiloft houses the old pipe organ as well as a large copy of the songs being used during the mass.
