Tam-awan Village: A Haven for artists
Posted on August 2, 2006
From Baguio Botanical Garden, I then get back to the Burnham park for a hearty lunch. Moments later, I travelled to the northwestern section of Baguio. My next destination: the Tam-awan Village.
The village is a haven for the artistes locale. It was said that this village was built by no other than the great Filipino artist, Ben Cabrera.
Upon arrival, I immediately saw several tourists have their faces sketched on a sheet of paper. There are two art galleries in the village that houses artworks done by the local artists. Some of the artworks here are for sale. It is interesting to note that these artworks are displayed inside an Igorot house. And before you get inside the gallery, one should take off his shoes or sandals.
There are a lot other houses built inside the village. These are the typical houses built by the tribes along the Cordillera mountain range. Among these tribes: the Igorot, Ifugao, and Kalinga.
The steps leading from one house to another is quite small, and unpaved. It is quite slippery especially during the rainy season. There is also a long bamboo bridge which gives you a sweeping view of the entire village.
The Tam-awan village is perfect also for those who wish to steer clear from the bustling noise of the city. One can easily commune with nature here. The only sound that you can hear are those of the chirping birds and the crickets.
