The Leaning Tower of Santa Maria

Of all the Philippine Churches inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the church of Santa Maria is one of the least known. This majestic fortress in salmon pink bricks stands right on top of a hill.

On the right side of the church is its belfry, which until now is still being used until today. Its bells were tolled when I went there to signal the start of its church services. While in the churchyard, one would notice that its belfry is not upright. It slightly leans towards the right, away from the church. When I first noticed this, what immediately came into my mind is the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

After appreciating all the beauty and majesty of the Santa Maria churc, I then to a 30-minute bus ride leading to the Herigate City of Vigan.
