Vigan Cathedral: Grand and Majestic!
Posted on August 17, 2006
From quiet town of Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, I took a 30-minute bus ride further north going to the Heritage City of Vigan.
Vigan is the third oldest city of the Philippines, after the Queen City of the South Cebu, and the Grand Old City of Manila. It was established by Juan de Salcedo, nephew of Manila’s explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. The city of Vigan was formerly called Ciudad Fernandina, after His Majesty Prince Fernando, the son of King Philip II

Stepping into this historic town, I immediately noticed this large, white structure. The facade is symmetrical making it easy on the eyes. Though this is my first time in Vigan, I immediately identified the majestic structure as the Saint Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

The Saint Paul’s Cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia. Under The Achdiocese, are the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, La Union, and Benguet.
