Saving Guimaras Island

Posted on September 1, 2006

Who doesn’t know the disastrous 8/11 incident in Guimaras?

Three weeks ago, an old and rusty oil tanker M/V Solar 1, carrying a load of one million liters of bunker fuel sank 24 kilometers off the town of Nueva Valencia in the province of Guimaras.

Since then, the mango capital of the Philippines went on a downward slide. White sand beaches were destroyed, Marine sanctuaries were damaged, livelihoods lost, and hope, dimmed.

But many would probably agree with me that we can see the best of every Filipino in times of calamity and disasters like this. The bayanihan spirit is alive once again in this tiny island, as each and every Ilonggo tries to do their share in cleaning up the beaches. Various organizations, both government and civic, think of ways to control the oil slick frm spreading towards the Visayan Sea.

Ingenious yet effective means of controlling the oil spill have been suggested, among them, to use human hairs, coconut husk, and feathers in absorbing the fuel in the waters.

Having been to Guimaras several times, I can’t help but ask myself: How can I do my part in cleaining up the seas of Guimaras while I am here in Manila? I know that this disaster must be controlled at the soonest possible time. Until last week, a good friend of mine BernieMack informed me about the Project Sunrise. The Project Sunrise is actually an awareness program for people on how they can do they part in cleaning up the oil spill.

You dont need to go to the island itself, nor cut your hair. You dont even need to gather all the chicken feathers in the palengke to do your heroic part. To know more on how you can do your share in saving the marine life, and the island of Guimaras, please go to the Project Sunrise website

I also urge you to please sign the petition to put pressure on Petron and other entities liable to clean up this national mess. The petition is located here

Postscript: If budget allows it, I might be sailing to Guimaras Island on October 23, 2006 from Bacolod City to render a day of volunteer work. If you wish to support my proposed volunteer work in any way, you can contact me through e-mail addressed published here

Indi lang kuno buhok hambal sang isa ka scientist sa Negros. Mas maayo pa kuno kon tubo na lang ubrahon nga boom kay mas absorbent kag biodegradable. :)
