It was in the late 1970′s. The world sugar prices took a nosedive slump. Imagine How the entire populace fully dependent on the sugar insdutry would react to this crisis. Then, in 1979, M/V Don Juan, the Philippines’ top passenger ship at that time sank and killed hundreds of its passengers. Then the Internationally-acclaimed TIME Magazine reported the malnutrition in the Philippines and the photograph of an undernourished Ilonggo kid made its way as the cover of the magazine, thus, the birth of the Batang Negros image.
Crises left and right, here and there. Seems an endless cycle of problems in the sweet sugarlandia.
This is my entry for this week’s PhotoFriday Weekly Photo Challenge. This week’s theme is Bright.
The photo above shows the dancers of the Pili Festival of Sorsogon, Philippines in brightly colored costumes. The people of Sorsogon celebrates this festival as a thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest of pili. A type of nut that is endemic in the Bicol Region. Pili is oftentimes, the preferred substitute for ingredients that calls for almonds and walnuts.
My sincerest apologies if I hanven’t been abke to to post new articles/photos recently. You know, I have been tied to my full-time office job right after I returned from my Benguet-Iloncandia tour.
There were several invitations for me to join tours and everything, but I just couldn’t join them. There was this Chinatown tour, Escolta tour, Pampanga food Tour, The Fort photoshoot. None of these were attended. Poor me. Blame it on my full-time job.
One of the most promising festivals of the country, the Himag-Ulaw Festival of Placer, Masbate is a festival of thanksgiving for the abundance of blessings from the ocean.

Held every Christmas time, the town of San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte celebrates the Damili Festival to acknowledge the main source of their livelihood: Pottery.
The people of San Nicolas doesn’t only utilize an ordinary clay in making pots. They use the red variety they call, Damili which is abundant in the Ilocos region. Aside from pots, the red clay is also being used to create the beautiful damili tiles used as flooring for various structures like the Fort Ilocandia Casino and Hotel, Laoag International Airport, and the Marcos Mansion.
This is a calesa wheel, taken out of the cart and transformed into a bench. Such a lovely masterpiece that can be found in the Heritage City of Vigan!
