Calea: Bacolod’s sweetest pride

Bacolod, being the capital of the sugar-producing province of Negros Occidental has been known for its sweet pastries and desserts. Whether it is piaya, barquillos, or napoleones. But do you know that Bacolod still has a sweet secret only few knows?

It’s the Calea Cakes.

This cakeshop first opened its doors beside the L’ Fisher Hotel in Lacson Street. In no time, words spread like wildfire. Loyal patrons immediately grew in number, thus, the need for a larger space. Calea, then opened their second store at the Robinson’s Place in Mandalagan Bacolod City. And just recently, they also opened their third branch at the East Block, along the Circumferential Road.

So what’s with Calea, anyway? To explain it directly, it’s one of a kind. No Metro Manila cakeshop could ever beat the cakes of Calea. Compare it head-to-head with Goldilocks or Red Ribbon, and you’ll know what I mean. And their cakes are cheaper too! Cheesecakes are pegged between 50-58 pesos per slice depending on the type of the cake.

My personal favorites are the Blueberry Cheesecake and the Oreo cheesecake. Their Oreo Cheesecake is far more superior than that of Starbucks. So when you get a chance to visit Bacolod City, never dare miss the cakes of Calea.

I agree. calea desserts are the best, along with the rest of bacolod’s food. I wonder why Calea hasn’t expanded to Manila. But then, that might take away the quality. Happy Halloween Eric:)

Manamit man ang ila cinnamon rolls, focaccia, lengua with rice, malabon kag turon ala mode.

    translation:

If your blood sugar is still below bursting point you might want to try the desserts of bascon cafe at c.l. montelibano, the road at the back of la salle. the baba cake is soo heavenly you must jot down your name in case you get hit by a sugar rush amnesia. Other notable goodies are cinammon rolls, focaccia, lengua with rice, malabon and their turon ala mode.

I was at calea during masskara and all i had was coffee and biscotti while the rest of the group had all these sugar laden goodies.
My blood sugar is elevated so a glass of Coke light serves as my dessert

  4. ahay eric … tani b4 ka di mag kad2 sa Bacolod dala ka Calea … I love it!

Hi, I found your blog after Googling Calea. I was hoping i can buy their desserts online for delivery or pick-up – my contribution to my class reunion this December since I cannot attend. When my husband and I left Bacolod for Manila and eventually the US in 1996, Calea was already a popular destination for lovers of good food. We also loved their pasta dishes, my personal favorite was their fettuccine Alfredo. Every time my husband goes home to Bacolod, he brings back their triple layer chocolate cake for me and the kids to enjoy. He handcarries the box all the way here to the SF Bay Area.

  8. johansen says:

btw, if you go to bacolod to try calea, stop by iloilo as well. i recommend messe’s turtle pie and mango tango.. the turtle pie’s with chocolate cookie crumbs, chocolate mousse and nougat. it’s to die for. unfortunately, i only got to taste their mango tango in a party, which was made to order. so im sure they made it really good. but stop by anyway.

and for really yummy pizzas and pastas, try Afrique’s. super yummy.. they offer large servings, so make sure to bring someone to share the food with.

  9. johndoe says:

add to dropping by Iloilo, also try stopping by DULGIE’S beside SM Delgado. I recommend their Heaven’s Cake —> a lot of people now are saying that this is the best chocolate cake in Iloilo.

No pastry shop, anywhere in Cebu, Manila, or Iloilo can compare to Calea’s creations. It’s rich, creamy, chocolatey, like ice cream-marshmallow. I eat at Calea every day I’m visiting Bacolod. Everything else takes 2nd place!

    Btw, nice blog! Great job!

P.S. Dessert Factory’s cakes in Cebu can be likened to Calea’s – but it’s not just the same..

  19. Lindlee says:

  22. Ransom says:

    SWEET DEATH

At any minute, I could die.

They have me surrounded–hundreds of them. They pile on top of each other, standing like giants. Oh, like leviathans and behemoths of Bible times!

They stare down at me with pride as if waiting for certain victory, waiting for my inevitable surrender. I shake and tremble. Never have I seen so many of them at any one time.

I shake and tremble more–like when one gets a panic attack. You overbreathe, you sweat, you know the end is near.

All around me people are waiting in line. All around me and just like me, people have succumbed to the sweet temptation that brings them death. Yes, death by Chocolate, by Blueberry, by Mud Pie.

I am in Calea, the mecca of sweets in Bacolod. It’s the last day of 2009 and I’m here to pick up the Oreo Cheesecake I ordered weeks ago. I stare at skyscrapers of cake boxes like I would whenever I’m in Ayala Avenue in Makati.

“Oh, that pillar of cake boxes over there, that must be ‘The PBCom Tower’,” I say to myself while looking at the tallest pile of them all.

I overhear an elderly woman saying she came all the way from Iloilo just to experience the miracle of flavors here. Back in my mind I think: Ah yes, the final pilgrimage to the temple of sweets. She’s here to die.

True enough, we are all here ready to be bludgeoned by a mass of Sans Rival, smothered in caramel, and savagely slaughtered by sugar and all its relatives. I am convinced that if superb taste and quality could kill, Calea cakes would top the NBI’s Most Wanted list.

I pick up my box now.

    Whew!

Inside this box is my killer.

It looks innocent and sweet if you look at it closely. But, yeah, most serial killers are like that, they say.

Well, if that’s what truly awaits me, guess I don’t have much of a choice. Sweet Death.

  23. kenny l. says:

calea is the best!!! check out their mud pie, blue berry cheesecake and to die for oreo cheesecake! :P

  24. JP says:

Just got back from Bacolod and a friend of mine suggested we eat here. My favorite was strawberry semifreddo! If only I could order a box and bring it back to Manila! :(
