Yakan: The Island’s Best Weavers

Yakan

The Yakan tribe is said to be the descendants of the Orang Dampuan ethnic group occupying the Malay lands. In the Philippines, the Yakan are settled in the lands of Zamboanga and Basilan. Unlike the Badjao, the Yakans are landbound. They usually cultivate rice, corn and other crops. Aside from farming, the Yakan are also known for their hand-woven cloths. Their handiwork are much sought-after because of its beautiful pattern, color, and the quality of their work. Some women even admitted that they can weave beautiful fabrics without followng a specific pattern or design. These are usually much more expensive that the regular cloth.

Their work is usually made into a coin purse, table cloth, place mat, table runner, coaster, or just a wall decor.

Singapore’s Next Top Swimmer

Bryan Tay of SingaporeThe 15th Asian Games in Doha Qatar has finally come to an end. World records were shattered, new standards has been set, and new champions has been declared. We have seen several great athletes doing the final game of their career, while we have also seen a number of rookies trying to slug it out in this international event, second only to the Olympics. One of the rookies that I am referring to is Bryan Tay of Singapore.

I first saw Bryan during the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Manila last year. If I am not mistaken it was also his first time to see action in this biennial meet. Claiming 2 gold and 2 bronze medals and a new Southeast Asian record for the 4×100 4×200 men’s medley relay is no mean feat.

Symbol of Faith

In Mindanao, where most of the Muslim population is concentrated, a number of mosques or masjid abound. It is also fascinating to note that each mosque has a spire with a cresent on top. Usually these cresent faces the direction where the Holy City of Mecca or Makkah is located.
