Samal Village
Posted on January 11, 2007

One of the unique facets of Zamboanga City, Philippines is that this charming city is a melting pot several of cultural groups. There are Christians, Muslims, Cebuanos, Ilonggos, Badjaos, Yakans, Tausug, and the Samal.
The photo above shows how unique the Samal tribe lives. This southern Philippine ethnic tribe builds their houses beside the sea, adjacent to each other. A small foot bridge is constructed to allow family members to move from one house to another, or if they want to go to the nearby street.
The one the things I like in this kind of community is that there is unity among the people. Villagers are very cordial to each other. You won’t see any trace of stress or problem on their faces. They welcome unfamiliar faces to their villlage with open arms, and the children? They love to be photographed!
