The Convent of Santa Barbara

Posted on February 26, 2007

It was almost high noon already when my friend Gian and I reached this next destination: the Convent of the Santa Barbara Parish. Some 15 kilometers away from Iloilo City, this centuries-old church and its convent has already been declared by the National Historical Institute as a National Historical Landmark.

The convent, which was done in an unually L-shaped layout was inspired by the Moorish architecture. The main features this convent are the arches and pillars made of red bricks, while delicate lines and curves were carved out of wood adorn the second floor of the convent.

This church has also seen how the Ilonggo hero General Martin Delgado rose against that Spanish regime. It was actually in quiet town of Santa Barbara where the Philippine Flag was first hoisted in Western Visayas.
