Handy tips for a hassle-free vacation

Posted on March 22, 2007

Now that the summer season fast approaching, here are just some tips that might be helpful when gallivanting to an exclusive island resort, or just staying in your grandmother’s hometown.

1. Wear sandals - One of the negative effects of the 9/11 tragedy is the tightened security in our airports. Passengers are now required to take off shoes before completing the final security check procedures. All footwear are required to be taken off, as well as belts. At least it would be be very easy for you to wear sandals again, rather than tying your shoes after the queue.

2. Check-in those liquids - Since the aftermath of the foiled bombing attempt in London last year, all passengers are now required to check in all items in liquid form. Be it a cologne, alcohol, whiskey, or perfume. It’s a big no-no to put it inside your carry-on baggage. The consequence? Confiscation of goods and the unending interrogation and inconvenience to you as well as to other passengers waiting on queue. I have seen a couple of times several balikbayans trying to bring in bottles of imported Scotch Whiskey as a gift, but unfortunately, were caught at the final security check, and the booze were all left at the security counter.

3. Bring ID when you travel - For God’s sake do this please. In an unlikely event of misfortune, you know what happens next.

4. Bring cash - It’s OK to bring your five credit cards. That is if you will be travelling to a highly urbanized city, like Manila or Singapore. But going to a secluded resort? Maybe not. Always bring cash. Don’t even assume that all spots in the Philippines have ATM Machines.

5. Check in early - It’s not funny when flight attendants would announce that they just can’t close the airplane door because they are still waiting for the last remaining passenger. And people will just stare at you like a convicted criminal once you have finally boarded the plane. Worse, if they would clap there hands cheering at you. I myself have experienced this last January. Fortunately, I’m not the last passenger.

6. Be ready with a PLAN B - In rare cases, plans don’t materialize the way we want them. This happend to me last December, when I was all dead set to fly to Legazpi City and see the Mayon Volcano for the first. But look what happened. Typhoon Reming hit the Bicol Region, as if there won’t be tomorrow. So what I did was divert my flight plan to Zamboanga instead.

7. Enjoy - Well, this is the main reason why we go out. Right? But many of us travel still carrying the burdens of the corporate world. Imagine, bringing a laptop and doing all the finacial reports while sunbathing in Boracay. Yikes!
