Legazpi’s Sleeping Lion

Sleeping Lion, originally uploaded by Enrico_Dee.

Legazpi, a first class city and the capital of the province of Albay in the Bicol region. And when you say Bicolandia, there are only two things that come into my mind: Mayon Volcano and the uber spicy foods like Bicol Express, and Laing.

The city’s name was taken from the Spanish explorer’s name Miguel Lopes de Legazpi, whose family came from Legazpi, a town in Guipuzcoa, Spain.

Bicol has actually a lot to offer to its visitors, more than the region’s signature landmark, Mayon Volcano.

So when I arrived in Legazpi city, I was then toured to its port district to gt a glimpse of the city without the usual view of the volcano. What greeted me is a seascape dotted with boats and fishermen. And behind these bancas is a hill, known to the locals as The Sleeping Lion Hill. Actually the name of this hill is Kapuntukan Hill. It was just called the sleeping lion because of its shape that resembles a lion in a sleeping position.
