Quince Martires Monument

Quince Martires Monument, originally uploaded by Enrico_Dee.

On the second day of my Bicolandia tour, I travelled by van for two hours heading north to the city of Naga.

Naga was once the capital of the province of Camarines Sur. But soon after it gained the status as a chartered city, the province’s capital was moved to the town of Pili. The city of Naga is, undoubtedly, the most progressive city in the Bicol Region. All regional offices of the Philippine Government used to be housed here. But it was later moved to Legazpi City due to its strategic location.

Upon arrival in Naga City, which is also known as the heart of Bicol, SSC-Naga forum members toured me around the city and showed me the jewels of Naga.

Our first destination was the Quince Martires Monument. At first glance, I was so amazed at its size. It’s so big, and lofty, yet it evokes gracefulness. I must say that this mighty tower is one of the most beautifully designed monuments in the Philippines

It was explained to me that the quince martires monument was built to honor the fifteen greatest heros of the Bicol region. Some more research and I learned that 11 of these martyrs were executed in Bagumbayan (now known as Luneta) just five days after the Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal was executed by firing squad. The Monument is surrounded by trees which provide shade to those spending time at the park.

I, too, made that bicol tour sometime ago

one of the 15 martyrs, btw, is Lerma from where that street in Manila got its name. Another is a martyr also honored in Tondo but whose name escaped me :(

hmmm… looked like it was built in the 1920-30s… american eagle… depression era haircut… terno during that time also (same figure in the carabao monument of the Negros Occ. provincial lagoon)…

why can’t we make such grand monuments like these? (calling the designer of the bonifacio monument beside the manila city hall)
