The Ateneo de Naga University (AdNU) is one of the premier learning institutions in Naga City. Just like its counterpart in Manila, Ateneo de Naga University is run by the Jesuit priests.

The AdNU was established in th 1940′s as an exclusive school for the boys. It was only in 1953 when the university opened its gates to female students.

The Jesuits originally asked the Archidiocese of Nueva Caceres to elevate the status of the church into a parish, but it ws not approved, because the Metropolitan Cathedral is just a few blocks away from the Ateneo. One of the main features of this Ateneo chapel is the bas relief of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia on top fof the chapel facade.

the church is not old, its actually new. it was built circa 1990s.

the original chapel used to be found on the left wing of the main building.

there used to be two wooden wings behind the four pillars, an assembly hall (where the morning flag ceremony was usually held), and a canteen. These structures were demolished to mmake way for newer buildings like the “old” church.

how do i know? i attended high school in ateneo de naga when the high school campus was still in the bagumbayan campus (now its in pacol).

the church is really new. if the wind just blows right, you can even smell it. in fact, most of the buildings there other than the burns and santos hall are all new.

i miss the old ateneo. as in pungaw.
