Aliwan Fiesta Results

Posted on April 29, 2007

The results are in! Aliwan Fiesta 2007 was a real blast and a great treat for all photographers. This year’s Aliwan festival is better-organized compared to last year. Complimentary bottles of water were provided to the press (that’s us! ahehe) more secured area at the press box, and lastly, thank God, it didn’t rain.

If I placed a bet on the festivals that are going to excel, I could have been richer now. ALL of the festivals I expected to stand out made it to the top ten. And just after the performances, I made another prediction on who’s going to be at the top 3. And I accurately predicted it all. Gosh.

many hilongosnons were happy of the results, but still there is a little dissapointment, not with the contest but on the dancers.

Actually pareho tayo ng Top 3, pero I was super-expecting Dinagyang to win it. Congrats to Sinulog all the same.

(Wish ko lang karirin ng Metro Manila ito. Asa…)

Shucks, if only I knew that all you need is a media ID I wouldn’t have gone through all the fuss just to get in.

  32. jeff on May 22nd, 2007 9:03 pm

you did it dinagyang…… sayng 2nd lang….. 2 of d judges kasi conected sa sinulog….. tapos la sila mapakita na tabulation of scores…..d bale ah, dinagyang festival s d best tourism event n d pjilippines and only festival n d world chosen by the united nations development program to helppromote the achievement development goals…. take note after the performance only dinagyang festival was invited to perform in the sm mall of asia…. we are very proud of the dinagyang festival

  33. Din on May 24th, 2007 3:36 pm

A local choreographer who has been joining Dinagyang for so many years and who has been observing the Aliwan contests has offered an explanation why Tribu Ilonganon did not make it again this year. The Dinagyang presentation has become too stylized — it was overly modified and it did not anymore showcase the “usual old ways”. He further added that some Aliwan judges might have found too much counterpoints in the choreography such that the real essence of dance is already lost in the display of skill.

We cannot avoid comparing Dinagyang and Sinulog performances. No one would argue that the Dinagyang repertoire was more difficult to execute than that of Sinulog but we cannot deny that the latter was a happier presentation — it was a jubilation. In fact, Sinulog performance this year was almost the same as their choreography last year. They just enhanced their costumes and props, changed concept from coconut farmers to fisherfolks. But it was still a happy dance!

Dinagyang presentation on the other hand was a display of the dexterity of the performers to move in precision, to shift costumes in the middle of the performance, to catch flying spears, and to jump much higher. Such was a difficult feat that it must warn the audience: Don’t Do This at Home!

In terms of costume, the Cebu color was brighter and more radiant. Their beaded head covers were magnificently and intricately adorned. Their props were easy to carry and their movements were simple but graceful. Their trumpets were loud and their drums rolled soft and fast.

Sinulog presented a joyous celebration, Dinagyang showed a mastery of talent. The former was splendid and made the audience happy, the latter was awesome and kept the spectators excited. It was excitement that made Dinagyang more popular and its performance more impressive.

  34. 2daRescue on May 24th, 2007 4:14 pm

Very well said Din,…I also observe that during the street dancing in Roxas blvd. Lumad dancers are more relax compare to the intense mood of Ilonggo warriors. It’s like watching a cultural stage presentation for the Ilo-ilos pride while for the sinulog bets the “aliw” thing is really present. Clearly, Ilongganon has the advantage in terms of dancing skills but its not a contest of dancing alone. The total package of the tribe is what matters most whether you live the audience holding their breath or make them smile after they watch. Both tribes are really good but the edge of sinulog is their clean delivery and concept. You can really feel that Lumad is doing a “prayer dance ritual” for Sto. Niño that makes it a Happy Dance..

  35. Zaldy on June 5th, 2007 12:17 pm

Clear yong presentation ng Lumad giving thanks to Señor Sto. Niño for having a good catch in fishing by praising him… Lumad represents sinulog kaya purelu sinulog yong dance ritual…

  36. mike on June 10th, 2007 10:53 am

    lumad is best in recycle.

  37. Zaldy on June 15th, 2007 10:58 pm

uunga recycle pero champion pa rin… mahina ba yong contingents ng dinagyang or malakas lang yong lumad basakanon?

  38. Christine Joy on June 16th, 2007 2:34 pm
