Passing through the Royal Gates
Posted on May 26, 2007
When we had our Laguna Loop tour last week, we literally passed through the Royal Gates of Pagsanjan, Laguna, Philippines.
The royal gates that I am referring to is the Puerta Real in Pagsanjan. Puerta Real is an old gate facing the west. It was built in 1878-1880 by the Pagsanjeños (people of Pagsanjan) using adobe, lime and carabao’s milk. On top of the triple arched gates is the Spanish Coat of arms guarded by two lions.
During the olden days, the street leading to the Perta Real is called the Calle Real or the royal street. Today The Calle Real of Pagsanjan is known as Rizal Street, in honor of the Philippines’ National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
