The Saucy, Spicy Lumpia

Posted on June 15, 2007

After the press conference I recently attended, my friend and I decided to scour the streets of Quiapo for some interesting finds. We took a bus which sped through the streets of Manila, passbing by the Nagtahan Bridge, and the University of Santo Tomas, the oldest university in Asia.

We then dropped off near the Basilica Minore del Cristo Nazareno. The most famous landmark of Quiapo. My friend then hurried me to this small street steet full of enterprising Pinoys selling everything. From motorcycle helmets, to screwdrivers to fake DVDs. We then entered a small unassuming place, known as Globe Lumpia House.

Globe Lumpia House

The Globe Lumpia House is actually located in an area many people call “Raon”. They serve lumpia and pancit palabok. But my friend highly recommended the lumpia. For the uninitiated, lumpia is the equivalent of the Chinese’s spring rolls. Lumpia can either be fried, or served fresh and uncooked. Globe serves the fresh variety.

Their lumpia is made from the ubod or the coconut palm heart, chopped peanuts, Romaine lettuce and lots of finely chopped garlic. Their lumpia actually tastes so good. It may not be the same lumpia the Chinese folks do, but it’s delicious! You can feel the tangy, spicy taste of garlic in every bite. You will certainly know that their lumpia are always fresh. And the best of all, it won’t cost you a fortune for this delight. A serve of lumpia will only cost you 16Pesos, or roughtly 35US cents. Cheap, right? No. It’s very very cheap for a delicious treat as good as that. And we aren’t just satified with a serving. Guess what, I finished two orders of lumpia! Just a proof that their specialty is a must-try in Quiapo.
