Manila Chinese Cemetery
Posted by on July 9, 2007
I’m sure many would get that creepy feeling when I say I toured a cemetery, right? But the Manila Chinese Cemetery is different. With all its beauty and grandeur, you will never feel that you are in right in the midst of the dead.
The Manila Chinese Cemetery is one of the most beautiful places I have seen in Metro Manila. It is a hodgepodge of architectural wonders. It is where Fu dogs meet Gothic designs. Art Deco structures meet contemporary designs.
Two weeks ago, I decided to walk around the cemetery complex and marvel at the beauty of the mausoleums at the cemetery. Everything’s beautiful. And as Ivan pointed out there are reason for everything. There’s a reason why there’s a pond of water in front of the tomb. There’s a reason why there are red placeholders for unused tombs. There’s a reason why there are turtle tombs.
Here are some of my unique finds:
A sphinx guarding the mausoleum. Yep, they used sphinx and not Fu dogs.
A mosaic made of Chinese porcelain. This is so lovely, only that the mausoleum itself is no longer maintained well.
You will never find this kind of structure in China. A Chinese-designed mausoleum with a cross on its roof. A blend of Christianism and Taosim.
Check out my part two soon!

a place where you’ll definitely find loads of the most ostentatious graves in the Philippines (or even in the world).. haven’t been there though but looking through these amazing pictures helps.
looking forward for the second part.. ^_^
have a nice day.
The sphinx really stands out! Haha. I bet it must’ve been weird to see it in a Chinese Cemetery. Hehe.
Did you join Ivan’s tour or did you go on your own? Ganda nung cemetery. I’ve been wanting to join this tour but never found the time *excuses* haha
