Binondo Church
Posted on July 13, 2007
One of the oldest churches that I have seen here in Metro Manila, and probably one of my favorite because of its location is the Basilica Minore San Lorenzo Ruiz (Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz).
According to historians, it is on this church that the First Filipino Saint served the Catholic Church as an altar server or sacristan. Binondo or Minondo as it was called during the early times, was built in the 16th century. Because of the numerous eartquakes, and the bombs that hit the place during the war ear, only its facade still still intact today.
It’s ceilings, depicted the mysteries of the Holy Rosary was don sometime in the 1940’s. Notice similarity of its altar to the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The church is located along Quintin Paredes Street, right in front of Plaza Calderon dela Barca, now known as Plaza San Lorenzo.
