The stretch we call Avenida

Posted on July 18, 2007

During the tenure of Lito Atienza as the Mayor of Manila, he converted the stretch of Avenida Rizal, or simply called as Avenida into an open pedestrian passageway. He ordered the removal of the asphalt and replaced it with red bricks. Plants were placed in some sections of the street. And because of what he did, business flourished in these areas. People now love to walk here especially along the Carriedo area. Wares and goods are sold openly at the place. There’s just so much buzz around the area. When all of a sudden…

Avenida Rizal

A week after being proclaimed as the new mayor of Manila, Alfredo Lim vowed to remove alcohol joints in Baywalk and convert Avenida back into an open street where jeepney ply back and forth.

And so he did. When I went there two weeks ago, the red bricks which reportedly cost 40 Pesos each, had already been removed. All that was left is the sand. And pretty sure in a month’s time, this place will now be lorded over by the king of the road: the jeepneys. Many has cried over the opening of Avenida for the jeepneys. Millions have been invested for the beautification of the place. But on the other end of the line, people are saying that opening Avenida to vehicles means lesser traffic jams in the area. I know I’m not an expert in this field. But let’s see. Let’s just wait and see if the traffic jam will finally ease. But what if it’s still the same?

Actually, it’s true that by closing the important road, heavy traffic was made even heavier. Plus, the said “park” was made into a thieves’ den. My family is actually rejoicing that someone has started to actually think about the situation and re-open the street. As for P40 per brick.. are you sure about that? Maybe the brick only costs around P20 each, while the other half goes to someone’s pockets.. oh, maybe the old mayor. I was disgusted by his decision to turn a street into a useless park. Manila needs more streets, not more parks. God knows Manila is home to heavy traffic. On second thought, maybe what Manila needs is lesser jeepneys.
