Scanning, in the name of security

Right after the September 11 World Trade Center bombing in New York, everybody got scared and the immediately made ways to step up the existing security process. X-ray Machines, Metal detectors, and dogs are put in place to prevent or at the very least stop these crooks from sowing disasters again. Many of these gadgets and K-9 units can be seen at the airports, malls and public places.
But private offices? I really do not know of there is a need for it.
