Scanning, in the name of security

Posted on September 6, 2007

Right after the September 11 World Trade Center bombing in New York, everybody got scared and the immediately made ways to step up the existing security process. X-ray Machines, Metal detectors, and dogs are put in place to prevent or at the very least stop these crooks from sowing disasters again. Many of these gadgets and K-9 units can be seen at the airports, malls and public places.

But private offices? I really do not know of there is a need for it.

Currently our company uses a pass-through type of metal detector. And another set of hand-held metal scanner. If it’s my first time to go to our office, I would really think I’m at the airport. Security is very tight.

I can understand that there are certain things that we are not allowed to bring while on the production floor. Among then: burned CDs, mobile phones, MP3 players, flash drives, cameras, and all other electronic gadget. I have difficulty n adjusting at first, working without my phone beside me. But rules are rules. And I have to follow it. And yeah, I don’t have any problem with these regulations because I don’t bring this kind of stuff in the office.

What really irritates me is how the guards act when we are being scanned. A single beep of scanner means you have to unload all the contents of your pocket, which usually just contain coins, in my case. This is so inconvenient.

And what really makes me fuming mad at times is that when they scan you using the hand-held device they would hit you in your private parts. Sometimes, they would hit your front, or in other times, they’d hit your butt. Damn. I really feel violated. I feel that my privacy is invaded. But what can I do? They would just grumble stuffs like “trabaho lang po…” (We’re just doing our job). This is totally bullshit. I do not know if these guards also hit our management team in their butt.

I don’t know the implementing guidelines for this body scanning, but I bet this should never touch the body of the person, right? The next time they’re going to hit my butt again, I’d definitely cry foul.

You should write to your management about this. I myself, after all these years, still refuse to bow to this paranoia of having myself frisked every time you enter a building. Sheer stupidity, especially the one where they supposedly ‘checked’ your cars upon entering the NAIA premises, it always makes me wonder why we live with such mediocre and insensible practices.

thanks all. i actually passed around this article at the office before i posted it here. and i found out im not the only one being subjected to this embarassing “security” check. i am actually planning to write our management to formally protest this kind of practice.
