Chong Hock Tong Temple

This is a very very long overdue post.

A few weeks back, my friend Gian and I once again played the role of Lara Croft as the Pinoy Tomb Raiders at the Manila Chinese Cemetery. Nah there were no monsters nor enemies that we need to fight. We went there (as usual!) to check out the varied types of architectural forms that can be found there. Our first stop is the Chong Hock Tong temple.

You’ll never gt lost in finding the temple. It’s actually located near the South Gate entrance. Just beside the crematorium.

Iloilo Dinagyang Festival 2008 goes to Manila!

Get ready. Be prepared to feel the loud thunderous drumbeats as Iloilo City, Philippines’ biggest event is set to unfold again.

And as a kick off, the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation headed by its Executive Director, Mr. Ben Jimena will launch the Dinagyang Festival 2008 right in the country’s biggest shopping and entertainment center: the Mall of Asia. The event will be on December 9th.

Tribu Atub-atub, which recently represented the Dinagyang Festival at the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly in Bacolod City, will be here in Metro Manila to perform their number during the program.

Tribu Atu-atub is one of the top tribes in the Iloilo Dinagyang Festivals. The group is a perennial winner in the Barangay Category of the ati-ati contest. It is the same tribe which made the Dinagyang Festival the Grand Champion in the Aliwan Fiesta in 2004.

The Iloilo Dinagyang Festival is held in Iloilo city, Philippines every fourth Sunday of January. The festival is held in honor of the Santo Niño. The festival is characterized by the loud beating of the drums and the endless thumping of the feet of the warriors or dancers painted in black.

New Bacolod-Silay airport inauguration slated January 2008

BACOLOD CITY, Nov. 28 (PNA) — The new Bacolod-Silay Airport of international standards in Silay City, Negros Occidental will be inaugurated on January 16, 2008.

House Committee on Transportation chairman, Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella, said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will lead the inaugural ceremony.

Puentevella said the airport will commence its operations the day after the inauguration.

“The Air Transportation Office (ATO) needs 57 days to inform all those who are part of the aviation industry worldwide that a new airport has been opened and ready to accommodate aircrafts. Within this time frame, the Bacolod-Silay Airport will be on the aviation map of the world,” Puentevella said.

The Bacolod solon said by the time the new airport starts its operations, the McKinley Road which is the access road to the P4-bilion airport, would have been fully-widened and concreted.

He confirmed reports that all major airlines in the country will start using the new airport once it is opened. It is located in Barangay Bagtic, Silay City, less than 20 kilometers northeast of Bacolod City.

“If not for the 57-day notice required, we can already open the airport by Christmas season this year,” he said.

Puentevella noted the old Bacolod Airport located four kilometers from the heart of Bacolod, will be closed down and will be sold by the national government when the new airport in Silay opens. (PNA)
