Dinagyang Banned from competing in Sinulog Festival 2008?

Posted on December 10, 2007

I have learned of the news that the Dinagyang Foundation will be sending a tribe in Cebu City to compete in the 2008 Cebu Sinulog Festival since November when I wasn in Bacolod during the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly.

Everything has already been ironed out. The selected tribe is already rehearsing their routine. Filipino Fast food chain Jolibee has already pledged to shoulder the expenses of the tribe going to the Queen City of the South. And everybody’s already excited to see Dinagyang perform in one of the country’s largest festivals.

But I was so surprised to learn the news that we will no longer be able to see the Dinagyang warriors nor hear their drumbeats in Cebu, as the Sinulog Foundation did not allow them to join the festivities. I was able to talk to Mr. Ben Jimena, the City Tourism Officer of Iloilo City and the Executive Director of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, and he said he himself has no idea as to why Sinulog Foundation members will not allow the Dinagyang to compete in Cebu.

Mr. Jimena even said that Jolibee has even asked the Sinulog organizers to allow Iloilo’s biggest festival to just perform as a guest, but still the Sinulog Foundation is hard on its decision not to allow the Dinagyang Festival perform in Sinulog.

But why? Is Sinulog afraid and insecure of the Dinagyang Festival? Is this rift still has its roots on the Aliwan Fiesta’s so-called biased judging? Is this because of the fistfight that happened in April in Santiago City between the dancers of Lumad Basakanon of Sinulog and the Tribu Ilonganon of Dinagyang? I hope that this is not because of the regional pride.

It is still very unclear to my why Sinulog would not allow Dinagyang to perform in Cebu as a gesture of thanksgiving to the Santo Niño. I just hope that the Cebu Sinulog Foundation can shed light to this incident. The people of Iloilo deserves an explanation.

Well, I smell politics… And to think that Sinulog and Dinagyang are “religious” festivals as the Sto. Nino is in the center of the celebrations.

  2. nowonmai on December 11th, 2007 2:14 pm

Same here. They’re both religious. I wonder what is the reaction of the prime evangelizers of the Santo Nino…The Agustinians about this issue?

  3. nowonmai on December 11th, 2007 2:24 pm

And also, hopefuly the Sinulog Foundation would give their answers.

This is an interesting post… I am from Cebu and I myself am curious and wondering why…. but knowing how the political leadership in Cebu is.. who knows…. but to be transparent about it, a proper explanation would indeed not only be proper but a must… the people running this show are in government and are thus accountable to their constituents.

  5. mhel on December 11th, 2007 11:14 pm

ayaw lang matanggap ng sinulog foundation na habang nasa parada and dinagyang nakabandera ang mga streamers na nakalagay na “Best touism event in the Philippines” or “The only festival in the world supported by United Nation”,etc.. o di kaya Dinagyang lang ang aabangan ng mga tao.

  6. jack on December 12th, 2007 9:48 am

dagdagan mo pa…Jollibee will be the one to sponsor the Dinagyang.

  7. Jared on December 12th, 2007 2:36 pm

Hoy anong pinagmamalaki ninyong top tourism event?

  8. Jared on December 12th, 2007 2:38 pm

Hoy mga Ilonggo, tanggapin nalang ninyo that you are inferior to Cebu in all aspects. Basura kayo!

  9. Jared on December 12th, 2007 2:39 pm

wahaha…byahilo, chances are, this Jared guy here is one of those sending you hate mails. do we really need to compete with each other? are we not from the same country? i’m proud to be an ilongga and i like cebu. we could learn from each other’s best practices you know. we’re dragging each other down with this cat fight. we’re sending the wrong message to foreigners. we need constructive criticisms not insults.

KAYA NGA MAG PA PARTICIPATE FOR THE PROGRESS OF EACH FESTIVAL. BUT, SAD KNOW, NA CRAB MENTALITY TALAGA TAYONG MGA PINOY. KAKAHIYA!

As we all know, Cebu has been awarded with many arads already, even as the premier province in the philippines, and the mayor as the Most Outstanding Mayor in the Philippines.
For me, I really say that the reason that the Sinulog Foundation did not allow Dinagyang to participate is because of the comments we Cebucanos have heard from Ilonngos about our Festival. We have seen comments regarding our festival being basura, having field demonstration as choreography, and many more. If you would be the organizers of an event and you hear bad comments from a contingent who is willing to join your event, would you welcome them with open arms? I say no.
Another very probable reason was the fight in Pampanga. From the news that Lumad has brought, we could hear that Ilonggos were saying a lot of insults and bad things to the Cebuano dancers. Lumad, being the representative of Cebu, would never say anything bad to Ilo-ilo. Does anyone here have heard any Lumad Basakanon member say any bad thing agaunt Dinagyang?
I say that the organizers have just did what they are supposed to do. What if the Ilonggos would insult Cebu again? What if the Ilonggos would start a fight again?

Why do I ask these questions? These questions were already asked and were already answered during the celebration of Independence. Why was Dinagyang not allowed to perform during the celebration of Independence? Because of the same reasons the Sinulog Foundation has why they don’t want Dinagyang to perform during the event.

  20. Enrico Dee on January 3rd, 2008 6:39 pm

    just to set things straight.

Dinagyang, too was invited to perform at the Philippine Independence.

But they declined to join the event becasue they have a prior commitment to peroform in United States.

I would just like to comment about how this article was written.

First of all, I think it would have been better if you posted a link to a reliable source such as a broasheet website so that things would be given proper consideration. Not posting any source just made this entire article idle talk.

I am pretty sure that you know of the existing rift between the two warring groups. Do you think posting this article in such as way would further better things? I don’t think so.

I am speaking as a Cebuano who totally respects Iloilo and You Mr. Enrico Dee as I am a blogger myself. But in all honesty, and in my OPINION, I think this article is a sugar-coated strike against Sinulog, Cebuanos, and the whole of Cebu.

  24. cebu on January 18th, 2008 4:43 pm

ngano ing ana mana nang taga Ilo-ilo?

the sinulog foundation did not allow dinagyang to perform here in cebu because ilo-ilo are very arrogant, they always brag and worse they always insult cebuanos especially the sinulog festival,.

    why is that?

even in youtube you can read the comments their, ilonggos insult the sinulog and the cebuanos.,

have they ever wondered why cebu is considered as the number one province in the philippines., cebu is also hailed as one of the “ten future cities in asia”

one of the factors that investors and foreigners flock to cebu, because of the PEOPLE, cebuanos are very warm and good people but we also stand for our right and we fight if it they will offend us and say something that is erroneous about us.,

Its a pity that petty things are being hatedly argued even up to the point of being too personal. To settle things down, it must be verified first if Dinagyang intend to participate and officially applied for participation in the Sinulog 2008. It must also be verified if the Sinulog Foundation had received Dinagyang’s application to participate to the Sinulog and that the said Foundation had officially turned down Dinagyang’s participation. Please note that contingents from other places in the Philippines had participated in the Sinulog and these includes the delegation from San Carlos City, Neg. Occ and Camarines in Bicol, not to mention the contingents from Mindanao. Sinulog is a festival that is open to all. Contingents from all over the Philippines are all welcome. As a parting note, please avoid hitting each other with harsh words that may hurt other people’s sensibilities.

gawa2x lang yan ng mga ilonggo ala naman balita dito sa cebu na pinag bawalan yong dinagyang, hindi niyo lang matanggap na sinulog is much much better than you kahit saang factors niyo tinggnan… bahala na nga kayo, pag handaan niyo na lang yong aliwan kasi nanalo nanaman yong lumad…

  28. Enrico Dee on January 22nd, 2008 4:52 pm

Zaldy, i was with mr ben jimena during the launching of dinagyang here in manila and sya mismo may sabi nun.

  29. itlogo on January 29th, 2008 2:29 pm

  30. thomasian on January 30th, 2008 9:10 am

what difference are you talking about?

can’t you see how monotonous your ilonggo festival is? hahaha. you must be hallucinating.

  31. niel on February 2nd, 2008 10:24 pm

cebuano also throw foul words in youtube, ilonggo is just defending what they believe is true.=)

  32. m2 on February 5th, 2008 4:42 pm

  33. arruba_native on February 6th, 2008 11:38 am

^^^ asus. the pot is calling the kettle black. sa salita mo pa lang, mas arrogante ka pa kung tutuusin.

  34. msigt on February 16th, 2008 5:56 am

Nobody in this discussion is sure what is really the reason. It’s just pure speculation on both sides, which results to unnecessary bashing. We are all Filipinos, we should just support each province’s festival to promote tourism.

I’m not a Cebuano, but I have to give it to them. The Sinulog became a very big & successful festival because of aggressive marketing & promotion - these cebuanos are a marketing-savvy bunch. Now, the manner how it is performed is irrelevant, what matters is it’s religious significance (after all, there’s no question that the sto nino originated in Cebu and later spread to other provinces) and how it can benefit the local economy. I just think that the Sinulog is arguably the biggest festival in the country right now in terms of volume & tourist attendance. Now if we could only replicate this to the other provinces….is a different story…

  35. tymisha on February 28th, 2008 4:33 pm

My goodness! You are all throwing nasty statements with each other when in fact these festivities offer praise to ONE - SR. STO NINO! Both festivities are well and good. Should you need to contrast the beauty between the two when it’s best to praise each other’s festival? We’re all Filipinos. This is what makes foreigners think of the reason why PHILIPPINES could never progress. We backbite and criticize each other instead of hastening more of our own as well as improving each other’s festivities. Not through NEGATIVE CRITICISMS. BUT WITH CONSTRUCTIVE ONES! PLEASE!

  36. tymisha on February 28th, 2008 4:35 pm

I was very disappointed reading comments everywhere in the internet regarding the rivalry between Sinulog and Dinagyang.

The Sinulog became a very big & successful festival because of aggressive marketing & promotion - these cebuanos are a marketing-savvy bunch…. yeah! really because ace durano is the secretary of turism.. naturaly, most of the funds goes to cebu for promotion.. can’t u see? most of the words coming out to duranos’ mouth during his interviews anywhere on TV always cebu, cebu, cebu.. even the balikbayan said it’s cebu..

  38. ariel on March 12th, 2008 3:45 pm

I think Sinulog has been around for 20+ years and it has been that succesfull even before Durano came to the post. With him around , it even makes it harder to beat. I’ve also read that the majority, if not all of the expenses for the Sinulog comes from the city’s local budget. And so it doesn’t change my opinion. I’ve been to other festivals around the country including Dinagyang and it pales in comparison to the Sinulog, sorry peeps. It’s a hard pill to swallow….

  40. radical_zeitgeist on March 24th, 2008 1:08 pm

mudslinging and badmouthing a festival in favor of another festival is stupid. i’m cebuano so it falls naturally that i choose sinulog as the better one but it doesnt mean i dislike dinagyang. i haven’t been to dinagyang and if i was born ilonggo i would probably argue dinagyang as the better festival. but let’s be objective with the facts, sinulog currently enjoys a lot things that dinagyang still has to level with. what’s the litmus test? tourists, tourists, tourists.

  41. mannyinadlaw on March 25th, 2008 12:56 am

Salamat at hindi pinasali yong mga trouble maker na dinagyang na yan. anong ginawa niyo sa lumad nong nagtagpo tayosa isabela? mismo si vice mayor at sinulog overall chairman Mike Rama nandoon at saksi sa ginawa niyong kabastosan. nong aliwan 2006 dami niyong sinasabi na 4th place nalang yong sinulog contingent which is LUMAD BASAKNON dahil magiging top 3 nanaman yong tribe from ILO-ILO,,, at nong natalo kayo dami niyong palusot lutong macao daw, may judge na taga cebu blah blah blah. sabi niyo pa na chamba lang at ng natalo nanaman kayo nong 2007 ibat ibang excuses nanaman at nag sisimula nanaman kayo ng away sa isabela 2 times na nangyari yong ha pero mas grabe yong pang huli.
