Buglas Festival: Oriental Negros’s Biggest Tourism Spectacle

Posted on December 19, 2007

Oriental Negros, Philippines’ biggest festival is set to open with a big bang! The first edition of the Buglas Festival 2007 is set to open on December 21. Previously known as the Buglasan, this event was then held every third week of October.

But sometime in the middle of 2007, Oriental Negros Governor Emilio Macias II suggested that the event be moved to December.

The Buglasan (or the new Buglas Festival) is sometimes compared to as the Oriental Negros’ version of the Panaad sa Negros, an annual event of showcasing the best of each and every town in Negros Occidental. The Panaad sa Negros is held annually at the Panaad Park and Stadium located in Bacolod City. The Buglas Festival, on the other hand, will be held in Oriental Negros’ capital, Dumaguete City.

Some of the highlights of the Buglas Festival are the trade fairs where each town and city gets to showcase the best of their place. There is also the annual Parade of Festivals competition where the winning groups of each town’s festival competes against the other festivals.

The perennial winners in this competition are the Yagyag Festival of Brgy. Cangmating, in the town of Sibulan. Also included in this list is the Tawo tawo Festival of Bayawan.

The Yagyag Festival has already performed in various cities including the annual Sinulog Festival in Cebu and has also been invited to perform in Tokyo, Japan in 2005. The Tawo tawo Festival is the 4th place winner in the 2007 Cebu Sinulog Festival besting more than 40 other contingents.
