A Taste of Greece in the Philippine Island Paradise of Boracay
Posted on January 22, 2008
The Island Paradise of Boracay in Central Philippines has truly transformed itself into a one global community. Folks from all over the globe come into this tiny island to enjoy the sun, sea and sand.
But the universality of Boracay doesn’t just end there. The foods served there has also transformed to cater the most delicate palates of the beach-lovers. One can now find restos and food joints offering Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, American, Italian, Spanish, ahhh and yes, Greek.

Horiatiki Salata
And one of the specialty restaurants in Boracay is ZUZUNI Greek Restaurant. And as the name implies, Zuzuni offers only the best flavors of Greece and the Mediterranean. When we recently went there for a food tasting, we were offered nothing but their house specialties.
For appetizers, we were served with pita bread and Tzatzik feta cheese dip. I love feta cheese. And I love what they did when they blended some spices on their spread. Perfect. After the Pita and Feta tandem, we were served the Horiatiki Salata. The salad is made of sliced cucumber, ground pepper, black olives, feta cheese and some vinegar.
For main course we had Moussaka which really looks like a slice of lasagna, except for the eggplants added in this Greek specialty. Zuzuni’s Moussaka is a must-try! After the Moussaka comes the Souvlaki. It actually looks like the kebabs being served in Puerto Galera. But of course the flavour is very different. And then comes the Shrimp Saganaki Pasta. Al dente pasta cooked with olive oil, shrimps and some more secret spices that will just simply leave you speechless. Two thumbs up for this! I love it! The pasta’s quite heavy but definitely a must-try.
After the main course, we were then treated to a dessert, Greek Style. Plates of Chocolate Sin came parading in front of us. Chocolate Sin is made of a small piece of chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream beside it. No, the surprise doesn’t just end there. To feel the best of the Chocolate Sin, you need to get a small piece of the cake, which is actually filled with a warm chocolate syrup, and a spoon of vanilla ice cream. The warmth of the chocolate syrup, the sweetness of the cake and the coldness of the vanilla ice cream is simply irresistible. It’s one of the best chocolate desserts that I’ve ever tasted. It’s one of the best ways to end a Greek dining experience.
All in all, Zuzuni foods are great. And definitely a must-try when visiting the island paradise of Boracay!
