It’s the Festival of Candles
Posted on February 2, 2008
Today, February 2, the entire district of Jaro Iloilo is celebrating its grand fiesta in honor of Our Lady of Candles or more popularly known as the Nuestra Señora dela Candelaria.
The Lady of Candles is also the patroness of the whole Archdiocese of Jaro, which covers the dioceses all over the Western Visayas in Central Philippines.

The feast of Candelaria is very different from the Dinagyang Festival which I attended last week. There’s no street parties, and no streetdancing. Candelaria is a feast that is more religious in nature. There are novenas, hourly masses and devotional prayers to the patroness.
But there are also non-religious activities like garden shows, trade fairs and probably the most popoular event during the fiesta: the cockfighting. Many cockfighting afficcionados travel as far as from Manila and Mindanao to experience the Candelaria sabong or bulang in the local dialect. Excitement runs high as bets could be even up to millions.
