Iloilo’s Nelly Garden
Posted on February 4, 2008
I have been to Iloilo City in central Philippines countless times. And everytime I step on the land known as the City of Love I always get mesmerized by the beauty of its old mansions. And probably my favorite among the many is the Nelly Garden.
Built in 1928 by Don Vicente Lopez y Villanueva together with his wife, Dona Elena Hofilena y Javelona. The Nelly Garden was named after their eldest daughter Nelly. The grand mansion sits on a four hectare property in the old district of Jaro.
The Nelly Garden epitomized what the life of the rich and affluent sugar barons then. It was a life lived by a celebrity, with all the glamour and riches abound brought about by the sugar industry. (Yes, the sugar industry in Negros Occidental originally started in iloilo).
What I really love about the mansion is its symmetry. The white tin give a very clean look despite its age. And the abundance of green! I just love it so much. It gives an air of freshness everytime you get there, or at least you passed by the area.
Definitely, a must-visit site when visiting Iloilo City.
