Posted on February 25, 2008
Be prepared as the country’s biggest, loudest, and the most colorful festivals will once again converge at the Philippine capital of Manila for the annual Aliwan Fiesta 2008.
This year, the Aliwan 2008 is slated May 1-3. The Aliwan Festival is organized by the media outfit, Manila Broadcasting Company. The Aliwan Fiesta is actually made up of three parts, the beauty pageant known as the Reyna ng Aliwan, the Float competition and the street dance competition of the various festivals from all over Luzon Visayas and Mindanao.
The list of the 2007 Aliwan Fiesta winners can be found here
This year, I would be very very glad to see if the following festivals would join, or return to Aliwan again:
Pamulinawen Festival of Laoag City
Bonok Bonok Marajaw Karajaw of Surigao City
Diyandi Festival of Iligan
Sinulog Festival of Cebu
Masskara Festival of Bacolod City
Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City
Tultugan Festival of Maasin, Iloilo
Halad Festival of Pigcawayan North Cotabato
Kadayawan Festival of Davao City
Pintaflores Festival of San Carlos City
The highlight of the Aliwan Festival is the grand streetdance competition on May 3, 2008. The streetdance will start from the Quirino Grandstand and will end at the Aliw Theater, beside the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Based on the last 2 Aliwan Fiestas I have witnessed, there will be three judging areas: The Quirino Grandstand and the Aliw Theater as the main judging areas and the area right in front of the Rajah Sulayman Fountain in Malate for the streetdance competition. The Aliwan Fiesta 2008 Streetdance parade will start at 4PM.

i still go for dinagyang contingent (why don’t they send tribu bola2?) also love to see tribu kahilyawan in action… g’luck guyz.. im your fan… say my hi to mayor beloy..
ive been to iloilo, cebu and davao… still iloilo’s festival is the greatest and cooliest festivity for me…
davao’s festivities should be encouraged to grow… organizers should get in touch with dinagyang and sinulog group for addional knowledge and also to aks what can they do to improve thier festivities because its really awful..
@klien i have yet to receive (at least the partial) list of contingents to join this years aliwan fiesta.
Dinagyang’s Tribu Bola Bola is no longer competing. The last time they joined was in 2006(?) and they just placed 2nd, the champion was Tribu ilonganon.
There’s no Kahilwayan Streetdance last november. I was in sta. barbara during their fiesta. So no contingent was sent to the Kasadyahan, and definitely no kahilwayan for Aliwan.
Tribu Saad of LEganes won the Kasadyahan this year, thus giving them the right to join this year’s Aliwan Fiesta
Yes, I am a fanatic of Aliwan fiesta, since 2004… I saw the performance of respective tribe’s from specific region… last 2005, ILOILO contigents bested more than 20 participants.
Pintados de Passi – Iloilo ( Grand Champoin )
Tribu Paghidaet – ( 1st Runner up )
Tribu Kahilwayan ( 2nd Runner up )
Iloilo contigents, bagged the 3 major awards.
Im looking forward this year, that we will take the Grand Prize… Go Tribu Paghidaet!
sky its
pintados de pasi-champion
kahilwayan-1st
tribu silak-2nd =)
sinulog, basakanon ug carmen contingent tudlo-i ra gud nang mga taga-dinagyang kung unsa-on pagsayaw nga makada-ug sila.
go sinulog! viva pit senyor!
eric isnt true that pintados de pasi will join??
ewy> i have yet to confirm that news.

,.hAi poh., as far as i know being a young choreographer (young as 15), we cant reli infer or guess rather, who will be the champion of this year aLiwan fiesta, coz it depends to the taste of the judges,. malay natin matalo ang festival na bet nyo dahil sa isang judge na iba taste niya., xmpre huhugutin pababa and score ng festival na bet nyo., gaya ng nangyari sa competition sa amin. let’s just wait the competition and found out who will bring the title. may this year’s aliwan fiesta be peace and successful. thnx.
Just want to inform you that the HALAD Festival is not from PIGCAWAYAN NORTH COTABATO.. It is actually from MIDSAYAP, NORTH COTABATO..
Kudos HALAD Festival..
HALAD Festival is not “of Pigcawayan”. Its from Midsayap, North Cotabato. Midsayap is where it is held and it is organized mainly by fellow Midsayapeños.. It would be unfair that the credits go to Pigcawayan.. Please edit your posts.. Or should you want to generalize it, just place North Cotabato instead.. Thanks..
That’s how they give their address in the Festival. the Halad Festival of Pigcawayan North Cotabato. it has also been published in the Aliwan Fiesta book which was released just 2 weeks ago…
well.. i actually think its wrong.. how would i be able to prove it to you?
there is no need to prove it to me. i have been to several stagings of the aliwan fiesta. the last time Halad joined in 2006, their address is from Pigcawayan North Cotabato.
You better ask your provincial tourism officer why halad is using the address PIGCAWAYAN and not Midsayap.
FYI, this year’s Halad festival is using the address of Midsayap and not Pigcawayan
Yes i will.
I’m sorry, but i really feel and think that Midsayap deserves the credit more than other.
Maybe it has come to their attention to finally adress Midsayap instead of Pigcawayan.
Here’s a link on which i can prove somehow that Halad is in Midsayap though you may not need it anymore.. Thanks.

It’s Aliwan season again. I hope someday I’ll be able to watch the Aliwan Festival but in the meantime, I have eric and other bloggers to thank for getting me updated with the happenings in Aliwan.
Hope the contingents from Iloilo put up a good performance this year.
for your information
we will take again our crown
good luck to all the contingents

gud luck sa tribu alikaraw for sure you will be on top on may 3…prove to them that carmen and abuyog did not deserve the awards..

Is this event really for culture or performance? The essence of Aliwan was to promote culture. In the end its performance, do you think performance from Baguio representatives does not deserve to win? its because their routine was just peanuts from Sinulog? or Dinagyang. Sana pag isipan muna. 3x for Sinulog will have negative to those who will be joining next year, parang loss of confidence na! for others kasi alam na nila mananalo naman ang Sinulog, its not bitternes by the ways sa Network war lag yun (ABS vs GMA). My mother was from Cebu even she feels that others deserve to win!
yes, I agree with the observation that aliwan is becoming an extension of sinulog.maybe, now is the right time to have another venue of competition sponsored by diff. business org. and in partnership of either MAKATI or QUEZON cities to compete with aliwan.calling on mayors BINAY and BELMONTE please be generous enough.also for the rest of the festivals except sinulog you can form an alliance to have this materialized.after all this is for the benefit of everyone.this is just a mere suggestion.tnx..
BAGZ HELLO!!it is not only true to sinulog but to all contingents.I believe they participated with pride and all sincerity, not just for nothing. With regards to the just concluded aliwan festival,Im am raising the issues of beauty, cultural relevance, and historicity of the performance of the grand winner and of the other concern as point of comparison.first,a repetitive performance no longer has the element of aesthetics=BEAUTY,it is already boring unlike to those who have innovations like of dinagyang.sad to say i find this repetition in the performance of the winner.second,on cultural relevance,I cannot personally comprehend the relationship of golden monkey, bananas, and farm animal-carabao to the worship of the HOLY CHILD JESUS as the way of life of the people.why not used instead guitars which is typically associated in the culture?this is more meaningful and relevant.3rd,on historicity, never in the performance of the winner ive seen that it portrays how their ancestors recieved from the spaniards the gift of the NINO JESUS. furthermore,on the issue of audience impact, you know the sense of beauty depends on what is pleasing to the eyes of the majority and not on the 6 judges alone.it is in this area that I have a doubt/suspicion as to the credibility of the judges.what is really the objectivity in judging??this area creates a venue of suspicion and doubt,so the organizers must come up with an explaination to shed light on this controversy. because if this will remain as an unanswered issue in aliwan who is a showcase of culture, then the winner and the festival themselves will lost their credibility…and even if how many innovations dinagyang will have to make they will never win even though they are the crowd favorite..Im not saying that audience impact is part of the criteria but what is happening for 3 years is already a blatant display of arrogance and deceit in the field of cultural presentation.to say this categorically,THIS IS CORRUPTION AND MANIPULATION OF OUR CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT!!I believe that in a performance contest like of aliwan, the above mentioned must be given justice to promote and restore objectivity and credibility of the festival.but as saying goes “everything has an end”so Im am suggesting that this is not a good venue for dinagyang to promote itself!!calling sir BEN JIMENA OF DINAGYANG!!JUST A HUMBLE SUGGESTION SIR!DO NOT PARTICIPATE ANYMORE IN THAT FESTIVAL!!OUR WELL LOVED DINAGYANG DO NOT DESERVE TO BE TREATED THIS WAY!!PROMOTION,AWARD AND MONEY ARE NO LONGER THE ISSUES HERE BUT THE SENSITIVITIES OF THE ILONGGO PEOPLE!!BUT STILL HALA BIRA!!
Hey ed! I see a lot of biases in your opinion because and i’m you are a true-blue ilonggo.
And i would like to correct your mind-frame from using CULTURE as basis of your argument because even in DINAGYANG’s dance form, we do not have pirouttes, body embelishments in filipino culture.
I’m not pro Lumad Basaknon but i would like to correct the use of CULTURE for streetdancing concept because dancing on streets alone isnt very filipino at all.
Talk to an anthropologist.
@edson!!when I used the term CULTURE it is in the context of the aliwan festival as the grand showcase of the nation’s cultural presentations..but as a matter of fact,I also used HISTORICITY AND AESTHETICS AS THE BASIS OF MY OBSERVATIONS.this is only a matter of clarification.thanks!
Aliwan is no more than a Dance Contest na! So if you need to Win dapat superb ang galaw just like Lumad Basakanon, but head-to-head sila ng Dinagyang yung lang crowd favorite sila, they end up 2nd place.
So much for Pamulinawen di maka panalo dahil yung steps nila is originals from their dances history
For the 4th time next year, assume Sinulog naman ang mananalo. Do other contingents have the effort to participate anymore?
JUST ASKING LANG ENRICO TOTOO BA 2?
Resulta ng mga judge sa aliwan.
Sinulog:
jugde 1 2nd
judge 2 2nd
judge 3 3rd
judge 4 2nd
judge 5 1st
judge 6 1st
Dinagyang:
judge 1 1st
judge 2 1st
judge 3 2nd
judge 4 1st
judge 5 4th
jugde 6 5th
mAy napansin ba kayo?…
I’M VERY MUCH INTRIGUE WITH THESE RESULTS.. NA E-POST KASI 2..
i do not know that. kung saan man nanggaling yan.
what i know is that the board of judges for this year and last year is the same.
Enrico@ now it’s becoming clearer that there is indeed a grand design to manipulate the aliwan festival in general..very very sad that not only in our political system there is corruption but even so in our cultural presentations such as aliwan.this is a blatant display of greed and arrogance and abused of authority, and it is already in flesh in our cultural events..and i am sure other festivals also share the same sentiments..unless this controversial decision on the 3x winner will be given justice it is only then that credibility will be restored..let us put an end to this.!!our cultural presentations should not be reduced to a showbiz gimmick!!this is not showbiz entertainment!!if MBC is using this as a sort of promotion this must be stop!!if there is something wrong with the judges let them clarify the issue ,for the public not to be deceived by their decision!!and let them explain the criteria in judging!!if this things will remain as it is, then sinulog will end up as a winner for the next century, even though with their mediocre presentation!!
this my own opinion lang ha.. sino kaya tabulator ng scores sa aliwan?. i am beginning to think that the scores could be manipulated by the judges/tabulator, since our own film festival has the same controversy/scandal, or it could also be the host as the culprit.. no offence to anyone but the trend s very much similar.. i am not referring to anyone, but since the scores speaks for itself, anybody could think maliciously..
aliwan is rigged..sinulog will win for the next 100 years.
how come lumad wore a tatoo-like costume..i thought pintados people live in eastern and western visayas???but not in central visayas??
karen,pasay city
pasin ko din..its called cultural anthropology flaws..
Enrico Dee, I praise you for your hardwork and patience in covering the Aliwan Festival 2008. I request permission to copy certain facts from this article/post of yours. I will need it in a research that I need to submit. I will include your name and copyright. Thanks!
ooooiiiiiiiieeeeeeeee!
may party ba dito?????
invited din kaya ako??????
nya ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
ayayayayay sali ako! losers! excuses! reasons! wahahahahahaha……………….
You know what, i have also an advice to the organizers in order to avoid the various controversies about Aliwan, kailangan all the criterias must be apparent to all participants, at kailangan walang cebuano or ilonggo na uupo bilang member ng hurado kasi hindi talaga maiwasan na maging bias o may kinikilingan sa lugar nya. I have been in aliwan for 4 years and im watching sinulog frequently at Dinagyang, for me may mga difference nga malaki ang pagkakaiba sa skills, creativity, style , choreo at ang totality ng performances mas more artistic nga ang Dinagyang, Im not from Iloilo ha, thats what i saw for many years ang cebu the same, repeat performance lang lahat pati costume, which is not also good sa competition diba?, for me plain observer lang talaga ako because i love festivals of our country.
THE CREDIBILITY OF JUDGEMENT 1.ATOP -Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines, 16 Regional heads,Directors with 500 to 1000 delegates nationwide for selection of The Best Tourism Event in the Country. 2.Recognition of the United Nation-For the promotion of Century Goal- Committee of UN Culture & Art the one who choose. 3.Best local Govt. and NGo Cooperation practices in the country- The Group of Company the one who choose. 4.Aliwan Fiesta- 6 members of the Board of Judges.- where they come from? Yan ay mananatiling tanong sa aliwan? If you want to ask the record of Dinagyang ask ATOP , UNITED NATION AT ASIAN DEVT.BANK. And now we want also to know the criteria for judging and the judges where they come from?
