San Vicente Ferrer Chuch in Sabtang Batanes
Posted on February 29, 2008
The very first tourst attraction that I found in Sabtang Island in the Province of Batanes Philippines.
The church of San Vicente Ferrer dates back to 1844. Built during the Spanish Era. The church was designed using the Baroque architecture. It was built using lime and coral stones with heavy buttresses on its side designed to keep it stable during the stormy weather.
I have yet to do a research on this church but I suspect this this was built by the priests of the Dominican congregation. Black and white crosses that are somewhat similar to the emblem of University of Santo Tomas (UST) can be found on its facade and ceiling.
On its apex can be found a capitalized letter M with a cross on top of it, suggesting its Marian influences.
Another highlight of the structure is its convento attached to its rights. Several archways were made right in fornt of its main door.

I’m not sure if this is the parish church of my brother priest. I was told by my brother that they only have one catholic church in Batanes. Yes, he is a dominican priest from UST.
We’re also going to Batanes this Holy Week, and all these posts that I’ve been seeing about your group’s trip get me all the more excited!
So tell me, please - how good/bad is the boat trip? we’re all pretty apprehensive about it, especially since we’re also planning to go to Itbayat island which is 4 hours away. But we’re still game. Hey, it’s batanes!
@ricmactal > there are at least 3 catholic churches in Batanes. the Basco Cathedral and the Mahatao church in Batan island the the one featured above from Sabtang island.
@rina> riding the faluwa going to Sabtang is an experience in itself. it may be scary for the first timers, like us. but as the boat men said to us. it is safe, despite the big waves of the pacific ocean
hi eric! im just curious. are you traveling alone or with companions? thanks!
Rina - there are times that waves are really big.. but thats what you call adventure…
How can I get to Batanes? Thanks!
