A Mediterranean Binge at the Mall of Asia

Posted by on March 2, 2008

Last week my friend Gy, and I decided to meet in Mall of Asia. As always, we do our chitchats over a meal. But this time, we never had any specific restaurant of choice. So we strolled the entire Mall of Asia in search for the food joint where we could eat and talk. Then we passed by Cafe Mediterranean. We decided to stay here. Since it will be our first time to try their food, though we both are not new to Mediterranean cuisine.

Gy ordered Moussaka, which is considered by many as the national food of Greece. Moussaka is made with layers of eggplant, covered with thick bechamel sauce and topped with another layer of cheese. It actually looks like lasagna minus the pasta itself. Gy’s Moussaka was served with couscous, a “rice” which is actually made of semolina flour, the same basic ingredient used in making the Italian pasta. When I asked the staff what couscous is they said its “pasta rice.”

I ordered Smoked Salmon panini served with fries. I am not sure though if this is atuhentic or not. Because I think fries are more closely associated to the Americans and panini to the Italians.

Well, I really don’t care if it’s authentic or not. But the panini tastes good. The smoky feel of the fish stands out. It actually reminds me of the Smoked Salmon in Penne I had in Amici di Don Bosco in Makati a few months ago.

For dessert Gy had an order of Baklava, a thin pastry with some nuts on it. While I have a chocolate ice cream. Gy mentioned that the authentic Baklava of Lebanon really tastes so good compared to the Baklava of Cafe Mediterranean. While I just can’t say anything since I really do not know how the real and authentic stuff tastes like.

But there’s a downside too. It’s kinda pricey. Oh well anyway, I got what I paid for. It’s actually worth the money spent, but I cant just afford it for my daily lunch. But still, a must-try resto I could say…
