BYAHILO’s Visita Iglesia for the Holy Week Season: Binondo Church

Posted on March 17, 2008

Second in a series

The Binondo church also known as the Basilica Minore del San Lorenzo Ruiz was constructed in the year 1596. But through the years, the church has sustained damages due to the wars and natural calamities. All that has remained intact right now is its octagonal belfry.

WHY I PICKED THIS CHURCH?

The mere fact that the first Filipino saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz served this church as an altar boy or sacristan is the very reason why I picked this church.

Another reason is its interiors. It may no longer be the original one but it is still beautiful. One can easily get a peace of mind the moment you step inside the church. Its ceilings are painted with the stories of the five Glorious Mysteries. Its Altar was designed to look somewhat similar to the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
