Posted on March 29, 2008

Angono Rizal has been knwon as the art capital of the Philippines. Art is just everywhere. From the visual type to music. In fact this little town has already produced not one but two (and soon to be three!) National Artists. These are Carlos “Botong” Francicso for the visual arts, and Lucio San Pedro (of “em>Sa Ugoy ng Duyan fame) for music.

And when I recently visited the town of Angono, in Rizal Philippines, visitng the various art galleries is a must. One of the galleries that we paid a visit is the Nemiranda Art Gallery. The Gallery is owned by a reknowned visual artist Nemesio Miranda. Nemi, as he is fondly called, signs his artworks Nemiranda.

Nemiranda is one of the personal painters of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. One of his most notable work is the mural that can be found at the EDSA Shrine in Mandaluyong City Philippines. Nemiranda has also been known for his works during the EDSA People Power 1 and EDSA Dos revolutions. Many of this artworks can be found in their gallery.

And true to the saying that talents run in the blood, all of Nemi’s children are also into visual arts. All of them can draw, sketch and paint. And even his granddaughter already knows how to draw at a young age of four.

And because of his invaluable contribution to the country as an artist, Nemi Miranda has been nominated to become a National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts. And if this pushes through, Angono’s pride will then count to three.
