i have to state it here again:
GRAND PRIZE WINNER: Lumad Basakanon, Sinulog Festival of Cebu City.
no more said.
The competition between the dinagyang and sinulog (lumad) was really cut-throat. Both are equally good, that the it already depended on the judge’s taste; no longer on the technalities of the choreography or music. Althoug dinagyang is still the crowds’ favorite.
Hay i sleep late last night, with my fingers all crossed waiting for the results announced at an online radio, but its all worth it! Finally the ALIWAN FIESTA is over and im so glad of the results, it was CEBU’S night definitely bagging most of the major prices. We thank senyor sto nino for answering our prayers as we all offer this victory to him. VIVA SR STO NINO!
PADAYON CEBU!
GO LUMAD BASAKANON
GO CARMEN
Im also proud for all the VISAYAN CONTINGENTS, 6 out of the TOP 10 came from visayas region. We are surely proud of the visayan’s diverse culture and unequalled talents.
MABUHI ANG TANANG BISAYA!
VIVA VISAYAS!
alvin of PASAY.
congratulations to lumad basakanon of sinulog festival from cebu. two years of winning the aliwan fiesta is of great honors. It is also equally good with dinagyang of iloilo city. i agree with foxed that it is up to the judges’ choice on who will win. i guess what made lumad won was the number of performers dancing simultaneously in the performance area unlike the dinagyang wherein performers are constantly alternating / shifting positions in the while performing. The number of dancers (as what lumad did) definitely is one big factor in showing the body of the dance. but still, i hope the judges considered creativity in the way the dance is choreographed basing on the entrance and exit of dancers during the performance (as with dinagyang.
congratulations to lumad basakanon but during last night’s show, DINAGYANG was clearly the crowd’s favorite.
SORRY TO SAY, IM LOSING THE CREDIBILITY OF ALIWAN FESTIVAL.HOW COULD SINULOG OF CEBU WON 3x IN A ROW??THIS IS NOT SOUR GRAPING BUT IM ASKING OF THE OBJECTIVITY OF THE CRITERIA OF THIS COMPETITION.IT IS ALWAYS CEBU,CEBU,CEBU,CEBU.HOW ABOUT OTHER FESTIVALS?HA HA CMON!!AND TO NOTE DINAGYANG OF ILOILO IS THE CROWD FAVORITE!!JUDGES ARE YOU BLIND?DO YOU THINK THE FEW OF YOU IS BETTER THAN THE THOUSANDS OF CROWD WATCHING.HA!HA!HA!THIS IS AESTHETICS AND WHAT THE MAJORITY PREFER THEREFORE,DESERVES THE COMPLIMENT.HA!HA!HA!NO OFFENSE MEANT TO SINULOG OF CEBU.HALA BIRA ILOILO!!TO DINAGYANG, IN THE HEARTS OF THOUSANDS WHO WATCHED YOUR PERFORMANCE,YOU ARE THE CHAMPION!!!THIS IS YOUR VINDICATION!!VIVA SENIOR STO. NINO!!
What a shock! To my disbelief, i can’t imagine why those warrior-like dancers in red costumes and bluish shields didn’t win the contest. The crowd last night was uncontrollable after watching the Dinagyang! The ones from Cebu are also good but quite incomparable to the energy and quail-like fastness in dancing of the Dinagyang. Difficulty in steps was also on the favor of the warriors. I was extremely awed by the way the dancers of Dinagyang managed to do an entrance-exit routine coupled with costume changes throughout the duration of the dance. That in itself was very creative and the judges should have given credit to that.
Dinagyang was definitely a crowd-drawer in last night’s competition. Oh well, the contest isn’t really about the crowd’s choice anyway but that of the judges.
I am hoping that in next year’s competition, the organizers will have more performance areas and not just the Aliw Theater grounds. Quirino Grandstand is a more appropriate venue than Aliw Theater because of its size. That way more people can watch.
Congratulations Lumad Basakanon of Cebu, more power to Dinagyang. From my side of the bleachers last night, Dinagyang was their bet and definitely the evident crowd favorite last night. Winning a contest is one thing, but being the favorite of the crowd is another thing. It simply a battle of the 6 judges’ choice of the thousands of people’s choice. Mind you, the people watching last night are not dumb and blind to see who is really the best.
you know what people. evry tribe who joins aliwan is a champion. coz for me sasali ba ang mga ibatibang festivals kung wala naman silang ibubuga… or shall i say will other festival will join aliwan if they dont have the gust to win. hindi naman sigiru dba.. congratzz to alikaraw and buyugan your great……i love the story about your festival
its not on winning or losing the dance it is how you play the dance
Ha! Cebu naman? Oh come-on. I know other tribes have a good fight, Dinagyang was a crowd’s favorite. Sana pag bigyan naman ang iba like the tribe from North Cotabato. Parang mangyari dyan other tribes have lack of confidence to win on the next Aliwan 2009 since alam na nila Cebu naman mananalo. Sayang nalang preparation nila.
Pero sige congrats nalang sa Sinulog, someday a tribe without distinction will came out of nowhere and will topple you down!
The Aliwan Festival 2008 Streetdance competition Criteria for judging are: Choreography 30%, Performance 30%, Timing and Rhythm 30%, and Costume 10%. (excerpts from BYAHILO.COM)
This is the criteria for judging, it clearly shows that there is no AUDIENCE IMPAC in the criteria. I hope aliwan organizers will give a “CROWD-FAVORITE AWARD” OR maybe through TEXT VOTES or ONLINE VOTING, para rin naman hindi na crowd ang pagbabasehan! CROWD is not a part of the dance its merely and added excitement.
to arianne.. that is why i mentioned that nothing has to be done anymore with Sinulog’s victory because the crowd has nothing to do with the criteria. Havent you seen my comment?
And though the criteria doesn’t include an audience impact, i certainly don’t believe also that those who were present in the performance last night were dumb and idiot enough not to see the difference in choreography and music of Dinagyang and Sinulog.
And for your information people, Sinulog’s Lumad Basakanon from Cebu has almost the same music and dance routines as their last year’s performance. Audiences from last night’s performance who attends Aliwan annually just sighed down in dismay when they saw the same routines from Cebu.
Check out Youtube and watch Lumad’s performance last year and compare it to this year’s. You will not see any difference at all… only the costume.
I attended Aliwan for the first time this year and after watching all the contigents up to the wee hours of the morning, my bet was Dinagyang. I was shocked to know that Sinulog won the competition. Sinulog’s dance routines aren’t new and in fact not typical of a cultural festival, in fact the routines are a bit modern. The wave and the circular formation routines arent new, its very typical of a high school cheering competition.
Difficulty, energy and creativity wise… Dinagyang was the clear winner. The way the Dinagyang dancers executed the entry-exit routines and the costume changing acts were superb. They did it as if it they were just doing the dance routines.
No offense but me and six of my friends who watched last night had Dinagyang as our bet.
Im just wondering why the Cebuanos cannot see the difference. Its very obvious that they have no match to Dinagyang.
every year na may Aliwan, nanonood kami ng family ko. yung performance ng sinulog halos walang pinagbago, parang inulit lng ung last year. khit noon pa, gusto na nmin ung Dinagyang kc maliksi ung galaw, mahirap ung steps and upbeat ung tugtog nila. ung sinulog malamya and boring lalo na this year kc ganun din ung nkita nmin na sayaw.

Although there was no audience impact in the criteria, it is just rightful to say that the audience was cheering and clapping when they saw Dinagyang performed. With Sinulog, i heard a few said “ngeeek” during their performance. It is only after viewing youtube that i found out that their performance this year was very similar as of last year.
I agree when people here say that Dinagyang was the crowd favorite and even if we say that they are only the audience, i believe too that they are not stupid enough not to see the obvious that Dinagyang’s performance was better than Sinulog’s. These audience intentionally troop the Aliwan to watch the festivals perform and therefore, not as keen and trained as the judges, the audience can still see who the clear winner was.
By just basing on the people’s reactions last night during Dinagyang’s performance, Dinagyang should have won.
Go to YouTube, type Aliwan Fiesta 2007 and Aliwan Fiesta 2008. Then watch Lumad Basakanon’s / Sinulog’s performance for 2007 and 2008. The videos will speak better than all the comments posted here.

That’s what you call a real winning streak, ILOILO’s real winning streak. If all of Iloilo’s Festivals will join Aliwan, i bet Iloilo will dominate the winner’s list. Beat that!
Sinulo’g performance is just a repeat of last year’s performance. Poor judges, they dont know that the same routines were used.
The decision is fixed and final that even THE SENATE, CONGRESS OR PRESIDENT cant change it. So i guess you have to wait another year again! (”,) as they say “there’s always next year”. Aliwan indeed showcases FILIPINO culture, because here in PHILIPPINES no one lose, they think they r cheated! Well im so sad to say that you guys aren’t the judges, maybe next time you should try to apply for the position. but it’s CEBU’S YEAR now, try your luck next time!
VIVA PIT SENYOR
VIVA STO NINO!
PADAYON CEBU!
No offencement ba sa lumad.
Well we enjoyed the Aliwan fiesta a lot. Well its true that Dinagyang Fiesta was really the crowd favorite- it was in fact my bet so with my friends. My cousin’s wife from texas like it a lot that she really went out of her way to have some pictures taken with the red-feathered warriors. When I learned through here that it only placed second, we were surprised… we cannot even remember the winner’s performance. I just reveiwed it in youtube, the guy was right that the 2007, 2008 performances were just the same. Someone said even the 2006. True, Dinagynag was still the winner, after all Aliwan was staged not for the judges but for the public…
You can say everything you want to say here. That’s what this site is all about. But that’s how your dinagyang will remain. Second-placer. Whichevery way you look at it, Dinaygang is Second-placer.
You can prolly call it a winning steak because you had no strong opponents in the previous contests. But eversince Cebu came into the picture, you were never able to outdo them.
So you can either wallow in bitterness or just accept that dinagyang will forever be a Second-placer and move on with your lives.
ALIWAN RESULTS are a sweet victory for the people of CEBU.We have bagged most of the major wards more than any provinces. This is a cause for celebration, a winning moments and proof of CEBUANOS world-class taents. This is the best ALIWAN for CEBU from the past 3 years of its active participation. Due to CEBU’S ALIWAN VICTORY, it is expected that next year more contingents from CEBU, will be joining ALIWAN, vying for 1-2-3 finish! To all other contingents, see you next year!
Thanks to MBC for organizing this event!
Thank you. Salmat. Hal Bira iloilo.
natural lang na pro-dinagyang itong site na to. dahil kita mo naman ang owner, diba? at kita rin sa live blogging nya kung how one-sided his comments are. diba?
This contest is not about popularity or audience impact, it has clear set of criteria by which very competent judges base their ratings on.
While disappointments are understandable, the important thing is that contingents did their best and people enjoyed the show which went well with out major hitches and accidents nothwithstanding the inclement weather that delayed it for a couple of hours ( i waited for 3 hrs).
Perhaps next year, Aliwan organizers will consider the following suggestions:
1. Come up with People’s Choice Award (popularity)
2. Improve on crowd control along parade route
3. find a bigger venue (Luneta grandstand) so more people can watch.
4. establish judging points along the route where people can stay and watch without going to the main judging area which are too crowded already.
5. Dont reinvent the wheel, get learnings from other successful festival stagings i.e. Cebu’s Sinulog, Bacolod’s Maskarra, Iloilo’s Dinagyang, etc.
Next year should be a much better Aliwan fiesta - and I will be there!
More power…
congratulations to Lumad Basakanon (Sinulog Cebu)! Three straight wins should already give way to others next year. magaling talaga sila. solid moves and the camaraderie can be seen through their moves.
byahilo thank you for the updates.
congratulations to all the participants, i have seen that they all gave their best.
and i am not suprised that the top three winners are all devoted to the Sto Nino.
Note: I was born in Pampanga, and lived my whole life in Quezon City, so my opinion about Aliwan is pretty much non-regional.
Although I respect the judges’ decision, I really really thought Dinagyang should have won. The Cebu City contingent didn’t bring anything new to the table: the same hidden props, same costumes, almost the same choreography as the past two routines. The only thing unique about their presentation were the plantains.
Meanwhile, even though I can only see it from the projector (I was seated backstage), the Dinagyang contingent was so synchronized, the choreography was superb. You can actually feel their passion for the Child Jesus as they perform.
SUMALI NALANG KAYA KAYO sa HIP-HOP COMPETTN OR DANCESPORT COMPTTION. OH CHEERDANCE KAYA…
Aliwan indeed is not a battle of crowd favorites, it doesnt even matter too if the steps are recycled as long as you fit the criteria. Being energetic and rapid in dancing is not a basis too.
True enough, thats why Sinulog won: because the crown doesnt like them, they have years of recycled steps and their routines are lousy.
a real festival must be culturally adept yet modernly fused and must have continuing developments and changes in execution and style of routines, even in music too thats why its called a cultural festival.
True, Dinagyang bagged the Grand Prizes during the years that Sinulog was absent but take into consideration that even now that Sinulog has a contigent, Dinagyang and other festivals from Iloilo continues to win the competition.
I guess we should expect more of recycled routines from Sinulog then, tutal wala nga naman sa criteria ang “Originality”?

Audience impact is a big factor in any competitions(dance, pageant, etc) because the show was organized for the audiences as form of entertainment. the event will never possible without the audience.
the judges is only the 3rd party for fair & honest competition.
The criteria is a guidelines for the competitor & the judges to know what the rules.
Most of the decisions by the judges came from the audiences satisfaction.
ace10,
KAYANG TALUNIN ANG SINULOG NG KAHIT NA SINONG CONTINGENT KAYA LANG MAHIRAP TALUNIN ANG MAFIA SA LOOB NG ALIWAN.
ALIWAN & SINULOG ARE PARTNERS IN CRIME.
WINNING WITHOUT HONOR IS NO DIGNITY.
mafia? hahahahaha.
just because dinagyang failed to snatch the crown ever since lumad entered the scene? mafia na? LOL.
let it go, bai. let it go.

VIVA PIT SENYOR
VIVA STO NINO!
PADAYON CEBU!
Grabe, ang performance ng Dinagyang festival. Tumataas balahibo ko. We expect dinagyang won. we are very disappointed ang lahat ng mga ilonggo… But still we are very proud that people also expect that dinagyang won… Panget ung nanalo…
i am proud to be ilonggo but i think it is Sto. Nino’s will nga mudaog ang cebu kay ga perform lang sila and they are enjoying it pero no offense sa ato mga ilonggo, gauna na ato tikal…… beleive in karma…..
and besides, their choreography is nice and well organized… i can appreciate it coz their routine is exceptional…aliwan is not a jazz nor modern dance competition…. and through their performance (basak), you can see the unity and the true meaning of the theme…. and let’s respect the judges’ decision coz they know better than us… wala pa tayong napatunayan so let’s be open minded….. it is better to stay humble… karma is everywhere… marami ang natalo sa aliwan dahil diyan… sa totoo lang
hanggat puro sourgraping lang ang ginagawa nyong mga ilonggo hinding hindi kayo mananalo sa aliwan habang kasali ang sinulog ng cebu. look at your posts, tatlong taon nang winning streak ang cebu sinulog at tatlong taon pa rin kayong sourgraping, kaya pati city niyo hindi umunlad unlad eh, 1 thing i noticed, napaka big deal sa inyong mga ilonggo ang aliwan, eh sa cebu nga parang passing lang ang balita ng pagkapanalo ng sinulog… we’ll theyre used to winnning anyway. ilonggos will never see aliwan as good or better than the previous hanggat hindi ang dinagyang ang nananalo… tsk tsk tsk attitude.
there is only 1 winner
SINULOG!
AND 2 WINNERS FROM CEBU THIS YEAR!
too much has been said, recycled ang dance steps, madaming gumaya, etc. pero bakit di nyo matalotalo ang sinulog???
The performance was lousy. So as long as the routines doesnt change and the Sinulog keeps on winning, expect that more and more people will clamor.
@qcchatters
i cannot agree more! hahahaha. you go gurl!!
For me everybody is the winner. We can see that all contingents danced and performed very well. And this is also a competition, so JUDGES should pick the BEST!
Congrats to Lumad Basakanon for winner 1st for straight 3 years of joining Aliwan Festival.
Congratzs to all the winners.
regarding the dance steps of lumad basakanon, binago nila yung routine from the previous performances nila… i found out that they have maintained their style pero different steps and its good coz they have their own identity…. and sa dinagyang, pabalik balik ang dance steps within the routine… try to check.. the head bangs and kicks…..
okay lng yun mga fellow ilonggos.. i think we should tone down on saying bad things or mocking on cebu, kasi these all is decided by HIM up above… we may not have won but if in our hearts itself we did.. so we should be glad… CEBU’s LUMAD was really great.. i love their passion and showcasing the unity of their people in producing a lot of vegetations and food for our community and it was awesome to believe that they really proved their culture had it progressed for years as evidenced by their yearly developments and on the other hand.. u cebuanos should also stay humble despite of ur progress in winnings and in ur city’s progress… EVERYONE here in the philippines had their own unique culture and to showcase that.. they need to perform well and better… yes I witnessed this years aliwan and last year… definitely because im a ILONGGO i can really say that crowd-favorite-wise our contigent was in to that!… and cebu’s performance was just perfectly furnished… but still I believe that to win this SUPER BIG Festival… it all comes up to a one decision… that is STO. NINOS decision..
congratulations to all contigents… U DID UR BEST..
conrats to cebu’s lumad and camen
and to my fellow ilonggos “TRIBU PAGHIDAET” - dinagyang!!!
hala bira PILIPINAS!!!
HALA BIRA ALIWAN FESTIVAL!!!
WATCH NA LANG KAYO DINAGYANG 2009 MALAPIT NA!
JANUARY 23-25,2009 ILOILO CITY, PHILIPPINES
this present aliwan was really an insulting experience on their part…
people were really ecstatic after watching dinagyang performed… the tribe was everyone’s bet… but after the announcement of winners, i heard a lot of people asking why they didn’t bag the crown… some were clamoring in disbelief…
my advise to lumad: offer us something new next year, so u can prove that you worth the crown. to dinagyang: 2nd place isn’t bad at all. you have the people with you as your glory!
I am an Ilonggo. Once and for all, let us all be objective in analyzing the performances of Dinagyang and Sinulog and lets see whether they really deserve the winning positions they got.
Sinulog is a worship festival by the natives of Cebu so its just natural for their dance routines to be a bit slow and dragging. Lumad Basakanon’s performance in Aliwan 2008 has similar routines to their past performances during the years 2006 and 2007. Cebuanos in the forum defends that the repeated routines (circular formation, wave, kneeling down and bowing) are their trademark thats why they keep on repeating it. True that trademark represents a group but it should not be performed over and over again in competitions especially if they are joining the same competition yearly. Trademark routines should only be performed in exhibition dances and not in competitions. Sinulog’s dance routines are simple, easy to imitate for non-dancers and a bit passe’ since these are actually being performed long before since cheering competitions started. But the steps, simple as it may seem, looked superb by the way they executed them. Sinulog had their dancers perform all together in unison thereby giving body to the dance. Its like having one small series of dance steps being magnified into a big series of dance steps because a large number of dancers performed the said step together. In that way, the routine looked clean and the choreography was clearly and neatly performed and noticed. The choreography of another Cebuano contingent (Sinulog of Carmen) had better routines than Lumad Basakanon except for a few who were out of pace in the dancing. But again, both contigents had similar passe routines as the circular formation and the wave. Lumad too did not utilize their oversized props and were left behind the dancers while Carmen had a creative style of displaying their props.
Dinagyang on the other hand is a merry making and worship festival that happens on a certain village or tribe. Therefore, it does not only include the men but also the women and children. In an ati tribe, men are either warriors, laborers or elders while women are either household or industry workers and each job classification performs a different way of worship or merry making. Tribu Paghidaet’s performance is very typical of the occassion, dancers do the transition routines by way of entering and leaving and then reentering the performance area after every routine is done. Dinagyang’s performance had difficult and fast paced steps and the dancers were performing different routines while dancing to the same music at the same time. That in its way is the weakness the judges saw. Since there was only a few number of dancers doing the routines in unison, the dance didnt have the soild body and the choreography went unnoticed. The performance then seemd to look scattered and messy though in truth it was even perfectly organized. Tribu Paghidaet’s utilization of props was very stylish and creative.
Sinulog had very simple steps and passe’ routines but the way they executed steps made it look superb, the dance had a body because the dancers were dancing in unison almost all the time. Dinagyang had very difficult and fast paced steps with complex routines but there was no solid body in the dance because the dancers were performing different routines while dancing together.
Both festivals have their high and low points. But Aliwan Fiesta is not Sinulog or Dinagyang Festival anymore. Aliwan is a battle of festivals and not merely a battle of dance routines and choreography. The judges should somehow understood the story of each festival first (should realize that every festival has its own way of dancing) before casting their judgement to avoid mislabelling a festival routine as messy and unorganized. If the Dinagyang looked messy because of transition (dancers performing differently together) routines and with all the entry and exit, it is because that is the way the Dinagyang is, a tribe with different classes of people performing their own way of worship and merry making.
I suggest that Dinagyang should do a few revisions in their routines and include a routine where all the dancers are performing in unison to give body to the dance. That is what I think the judges are looking for since most of them are dance choreographers. For Sinulog, a dance should evolve and routines should not be repeated over and over again.
With all these bruhaha, after considering all the aspects I have written above, my own set of winners would be:
Grand Prize: Tribu Paghidaet, Dinagyang Festival, Iloilo City
2nd Place: Sinulog Festival, Carmen, Cebu
3rd Place: Lumad Basakanon, Sinulog Festival, Cebu City
to timlibunao:
performance art (film, theater, stand-up, sing, dance competition, etc.) can never be objectified qualitatively. that’s why it’s called art, cause it’s supposed to draw our subjectivity. even if the organizers had set standards to qualify what the competition winner should be, in the end, having 6 judges weigh the performance will always subject the judging with partiality based from their respective taste and preferences. if folks who insist dinagyang should have won based from the alleged audience popularity, then suggest that winners of aliwan be decided by popularity vote, like american idol.
this way, we all shut-up and have a piece of the pie. in the meantime, if ya’ll can’t accept the winners of aliwan, deal with it. the judges decision is final and binding.
go sinulog.
to redzeitgeist:
1) i never insisted that Dinagyang should’ve won because of its popularity among the audience
2) indeed true, as you have said “having 6 judges weigh the performance will always subject the judging with partiality based from their respective taste and preferences”…. and it is quite evident that the taste of the majority of the six judges eversince was a dance-like performance and not really a typical cultural presentation, contingents have to adjust a bit to these taste to get the nod.
3) performance art can be qualified objectively if one knows the roots of the said performance art. ballet has universal steps but is individualized according to its country of origin. the way one dances and sings and even the type of movies he watch is greatly influenced by its country of origin. Thats why to judge a performance art, it is important to know its country of origin and to what culture it was based from.
and if lumad would present an entirely different routine and win again next year, would you promise to be civil enough about it?
and your personal ‘assessments’ of the performances wouldn’t matter now, would they?
move on.
LOOSERS YOU SHOULD GET OVER IT!
ALIWAN IS OVER! HAHAHA
arriane..parang ka sira plaka..copy paste ba naman..hahahaa..get over with your political views..kaya kayo nanalo kasi dahil sa bulok na politika..
common guys.. timlambunao was just presenting his own opinion.. nothing to brag about that…
‘yan ang mga bopols hirap mag-english kaya copy paste na lang.
You can see here who are more educated people based on comments.
to robertson:
Was I not civil enough my friend? isnt it that I was very objective with my comments and assessments? I never hit nor lambasted Sinulog, what I did was assess every contingent’s performance. There was nothing wrong with the way Sinulog and Dinagyang performed, for no one can question their interpretation because they themselves know their festival better than anyone.
I would like to stress my point again, Aliwan is a battle of festivals being staged in another venue and not merely a battle of dance routines. Therefore it is but required that performances from the different festivals should be able to tell other people how their festival goes and not merely presenting a dance routine that is already modernized.
I would like to keep on reminding the organizers and the judges to at least read a primer about the competiting festival, understand it and find out during the performance night whether the contigents were able to represent their festivals properly through their performance or were they just plain dancing and performing a routine that is not even representative of the festival.
What I want to see in next year’s Aliwan? A performance that is very informative and representative of every festival, an entirely different routine from Sinulog contingents. The judges should also assess a contingent’s performance in entirity whether they are truly representative of their festival or not. Dance routines and choreography are merely icing on the cake.
I know Im a bit biased because I wanted Dinagyang to win because I believe they have represented the festival brilliantly with their theatrical way of presentation. Admit it guys, Lumad’s performance was more of dance routines and not an artistic way of representing Sinulog. Or maybe because I myself doesnt know anything about Sinulog on the other hand thats why I thought Dinagyang gave a better representation.
Nevertheless, the organizers should set a very clear, precise and detailed criteria of judging next year. The judges should know the competing festivals more before judging who among them is the best. That way, the Aliwan experience will not only be fun and entertaining but also very informative in knowing the culture of every festival. For I know, Aliwan is staged to showcase to the country and the world the diverse cultural differences in the Philippines.
I am happy that these comment pages are existing, in this way flaws from the past be it coming from the organizers, judges and competitors will be corrected. I despise people (both Cebuanos and Ilonggos and others) in this forum and in YouTube who gives unfair and deregatory comments without even thinking about them. Commenting and criticising should always be done objectively.
I pray that the organizers will have a chance to read our comments, improve the Aliwan next year so that everybody will be happy and contented not only with the results but also with the ALiwan as a whole. Peace out.
rannie, are you sure that you’re ilonggo? ikaw siguro ang gatinikal because you’re not writing the right ilonggo or hiligaynon words. hehehe! pakadlaw ka lang! Kahuluya!

i am proud to be ilonggo but i think it is Sto. Nino’s will nga mudaog ang cebu kay ga perform lang sila and they are enjoying it pero no offense sa ato mga ilonggo, gauna na ato tikal…… beleive in karma…..
please do not accuse ilonggos for giving comments.. after all.. some or most of those who commented here that their bet was dinagyang where actually manileños.. those from luzon, so you cannot say that all who agrees with diagyang are all ilonggos.. lets not be one sided ok? if you defend your bet, then also try looking the other way. as i have noticed, all comments that are about dinagyang, they also include sinulog, they also admire sinulog, but then when sinulog replies, even a single word of “appreciation” dinagyang never showed.. is that how greedy you are of the kind words? please don’t be self centered ok.. “no offense meant” and i mean that. i know dinagyang tribe accepted the 2nd place, i couldn’t say its a defeat because in the hearts of many, dinagyang won. but its the “fans” of dinagyang who are stating their insights.. so please don’t take it personally.. don’t be so affected.. after all sinulog won and it’s final.. congratulations to all the winners… again i mean no offense here.. just my points.. ok?? peace tayo lahat dito!…
ATTENTION CEBUANOS AND FELLOW ILONGGOS:
making comments to the performance of both the Dinagyang and Sinulog contingents doesnt imply anything negative as long as the comments are fair and non-deregatory. I admire those who post constructive criticisms and objective comments and despise those who are idiotic in their messages.
Go defend your festival, just dont underestimate the other and brag about yours.
PAG MAY BASTOS WAG NA LANG PATULAN. LET US NOT SPARK A FIGHT BETWEEN CEBU AND ILOILO.
just an addition to timlibunao;..in the discipline of AESTHETICS, it is the majority who has the credibility to say who is the best, the better, and the ugly.so, when you have a case like this, it is only normal that people will react in this way.as long as there is the element of doubt people will really find a way to look for the answer.straight to the point-DINAGYANG HAS ALL THE ELEMENTS OF; BEAUTY,CREATIVITY,CULTURAL RELEVANCE,HISTORICITY,AND INNOVATIONS WHILE SINULOG DONT HAVE THESE and what they have were recycled and mediocre performance, so we are asking.. WHY IS IT THAT THEY STILL WON THE 1ST PLACE AWARD??if indeed aliwan is a showcase of the nations festival??are the 6 judges blind to these reality?the performance speaks for itself and the responses of the people who witnessed the event are the proofs that DINAGYANG WAS THE RIGHTFUL WINNER!!TO DINAGYANG!!YOU WON THE PEOPLE’S HEARTS!!THIS IS YOUR VINDICATION AND NOBODY COULD TAKE THAT AWAY FROM YOU!!OUR’S IS THE MORAL VICTORY!!HALA BIRA ILOILO!!VIVA SENOR STO. NINO!!USWAG ILOILO!!
Dinagyang Tribu Paghidaet will be at Makati this coming Friday afternoon, May 9, 2008. This is your chance to see them again.
They will join the Makati Grand Parade.
Other participants in the parade include the Makati Cycling Federation, Tribu Carlota with Groove Manila, and Makati-based companies such as Multinational Bancorporation and Amalgamated Development Corp., Metrobank, Loyola Plans, Cocolife, National Life Insurance Co., Rufino Pacific Tower/VAR Buildings, Inc., Pacific Star, Philamlife Tower, Social Security System, Megaworld Corp., Association of Makati Industries
The event will also feature clowns and mimes, bands, Higantes, unicyclists, stilt walkers, and other street dancers and performers, including Makati Caracol 2008 winners and Mananayaw ng Makati.
MAJORITY’S DECISION isnt the case for ALIWAN FIESTA its the JUDGES TASTE.. SINULOG has a very clear concept and originality, it is uncomparable to any other “mediocre” festivals who tries to use the IMAGE OF STO. NINO DE CEBU in their dances, but instead they r using the image as an ALIBI for them to make a festival out of it and to”BOOST TOURISM” in their place..
SINULOG is offered to STO. NINO and it is the ORIGINAL FESTIVAL that is intended for STO. NINO DE CEBU.Thats is why the jidges know SINULOG very well becauese they see the “heart of worship” in the dance and not just pure showcase of props and talents…
SINULOG has a deeper meaning, and it is a ritual dance that we dont need complexed acrobatic type of dancing.. Id you want to know about SINULOG type SULOG documentary to know its past and HISTORY!
ONCE AGAIN CONGRATULATIONS to the CEBUANO CONTINGENTS!
Very well said…no more to say,
a Million thanks to all who supported Lumad Basakanon and Carmen…. Kung wla kayo…di namin maabot ang isang achievement an tulad nito, HALL of FAME na ang Lumad Basakanon and soon ang Carmen, og Labaw sa tanan…….
DAGHANG SALAMAT KANIMO!!!…SR. STO. NiÑO!!!!
DAGHANG SALAMAT CEBU!!!
well, let us not forget that alikaraw festival of hilongos, leyte was the very first contingent to perform during aliwan festival ‘08.
Right after the streetdancing, they were not even given a single minute to prepare their props at the back..
Compared to the other contingents wherein, they still have to time to inhale/exhale, retouch and say their prayers while the other group ahead of them is performing..
makes sense right?
this is not to just limit the issue to alikaraw who performed first but to other groups that will be performing FIRST in every competition.
it’s not really a big deal who won or not..we don’t have to fight over it.The good things is: we were able to showcase the talents that our own province has to offer..more especially giving back glory to GOD who gave it to us.
BUT just allow me to voice out something. This is for some people who actually failed to understand how it feels inside the shoes of alikaraw dancers who also did their best.

just a feedback FOR THE ORGANIZERS:
this is not to just limit the issue to alikaraw festival who performed first but to other groups who will be performing FIRST foR next year’s aliwan.
ARIANNE HELLO!!the point is very clear!!IT IS ABOUT AESTHETICS..OK!!THIS IS ABOUT BEAUTY!!and when we talked about it we must consider what is the judgment of the majority..you keep on insisting on your 6 judges, now what if they were paid to alter the result not in favor to the expectation of the majority..during the performance night it is very clear that the reaction of the crowd was in favor of dinagyang so you must accept it.that is my point!!that is why i mentioned that aside from the consolation prize what DINAGYANG WON WAS MORAL VICTORY!!AND THIS IS SWEETER THAN YOUR FIRST PLACE AWARD!!
Some are still questioning!!! Its somehow another way of saying that the judges are not worthy. Well, maybe you guys need to try harder next time. Its part of the competition. tanggapin nyo na, second best lang kayo! You guys still need to learn.
crystalgay032003,
Huwag mong idamay lahat ng ilonggo. let us stick to the issue in Aliwan results.
Don’t generalize the whole Iloilo.
bakit kaya?
well CONGRATS SA LAHAT NG PERFORMER SA ALIWAN 2008
SANA LANG SA SUSUNOD MAGPERFORM ULIT SILA SA GRANDSTAND. KASI NAMAN PO HINDI NAMAN PO KAYANG MAPANOORAN YUNG SA ALIW MASYADO SIKSIKAN DOUN PARANG SARDINAS NA HALOS HINDI MO RIN MAKITA NG LIVE AND PERFORMERS……
to Naaliw:
It is very hard to accept defeat in Aliwan especially if Dinagyang has been critically acclaimed by artists here and abroad for its intricate cultural background fused with modern routines, theatrical approach in reenaction and dance and an upbeat music through drums, percussion and indigenous materials.
If Ilonggos cannot accept defeat in Aliwan, it is our problem anymore and Cebuanos should not take it against themselves. If Cebuanos feel insulted by our actions, then we cannot do something about it. Just be proud Cebuanos that you won the Aliwan, for if you cant, then it will only justify our claim. I myself do not hit Cebuanos for their victory although my personal choice is Dinagyang. If there are some lowlifes (Cebuanos, Ilonggos or others) hitting ur festival, i suggest that you do not stoop down to their level and do the same. There is nothing wrong with not accepting defeat among others for as long as it is coursed through a sane and logical manner.
In the first place, as for me, Lumad from Cebu just performed in the Aliwan and has got nothing to do with their victory (except with their performance of course). Therefore, blaming the Cebuanos for their victory is and was not in the Ilonggos’ ala carte menu and should not be tolerated. If Ilonggos then say that Dinagyang was better than Sinulog in the Aliwan, pls. do not take offense in it as it is just our view as Ilonggos and perhaps you would be feeling the same with your Sinulog.
I personally do not hit Cebu or Sinulog in Aliwan’s case. I also do not blame the judges initially for making Sinulog win though they are partly involved. The bigger part of the cake belonged to the organizers for they did not perfectly and precisely qualified and/or quantified their set of criterias for judging. The judges in turn, good as they maybe, should have reevaluated the supposed to be “flawed” criteria and has somehow realized that Aliwan is a battle of festivals and not merely of dance routines. Therefore the catch is to assess a contigent’s performance as a whole, in its entirity, and not just by looking at the way they danced and shouted. For we all have to remember that Aliwan’s goal is “to showcase the culture of the nation’s provinces through festivals to the world”. Therefore, it is but imperative that Aliwan’s criteria should not be based on the sole criteria of choreography (30%), performance (30%), timing & rhythm (30%) and costumes (10%).
Instead, choreography, performance, timing and rhythm should all go together and get 30%, cultural adeptness and festival interpretation should get 40%, overall impact of the performance (whether its choreography and performance jives with its cultural aspect and interpretation) should get 20% and costumes with 10%.
As i would reiterate, to Naaliw’s comment, this does not mean that the judges are undereducated. Yes, Aliwan has lost its credibility because the organizers has repeatedly failed to identify the flaws and misgivings of the activity considering that this year was the sixth year Aliwan was staged.
Yes, it is true that Sinulog of Cebu won and Iloilo’s Dinagyang was only second best for three years. But would it be better if a winner won fair and square in a competition with a criteria that is strict and of the highest standards adhering to the international paradigm of cultural and artistic taste? Is it only the Ilonggos clamoring around or are there others? We dont know. I for once will not feel happy with my victory if I know that people around me are not satisfied with my performance. Yes it is victory for me, but the question is, “Is it sweet victory?”
To Naaliw and other Cebuanos, think again. We should not pick fights and post deregatory statements to each other. Instead, we should all work together, hand in hand Cebuanos and Ilonggos alike, to bang on the organizers and tell them that their criteria needs revision. Manila Broadcasting Company is not a cultural nor artistic company, it deals with broadcast. So it is quite acceptable yet irritating that they are not culturally and artisticaly qualified to set a criteria. Therefore, adhering to Aliwan’s goals of showcasing our festivals to the world, a criteria fit to the goal should be envisioned and realised. For in the end, what is the essence of winning if we only enjoy it only to ourselves and not with others? What use is Aliwan’s goals if the criteria chooses a set of winners thats has no clear representation of its province’s culture.
As simple line to ponder on: “To err is human, but to commit it more than once is inhuman.
definitly lumad is the tru winning of aliwan 08 while dinagyang shud b 2nd based on their performance…
That was exactly my point, BLAME THE ORGANIZERS NOT THE WINNERS.For CEBU’S CONINGENTS just like any other CONTINGENTS joining ALIWAN is working very hard and investing, its time, effort and money to showcase their festival and be the best in ALIWAN. It is just but UNFAIR if you accused these innocent TRIBES AND PERFORMERS, who know nothing but dancing their festival. IT is indeed a VERY SWEET VICTORY WINNING 3X in a row, LUMAD has been criticized by 3 different set of JUDGES in ALIWAN and as always they ranked number 1. We cant do anything about it because it is JUDGE’S DECISION, and I agree that their is a FLAW in the CRITERIA FOR JUDGING, the best thing for us to do is mail the organizers regarding the issue so that they can address it and have a new set of criteria next year. IT is also but UNFAIR to say ALIWAN IS NOT PRESTIGIOUS OR HAS LOST CREDIBILITY. Im sure with or without CEBUANO & ILONGGO contingents many will still join the said festivity NEXT YEAR. It is a very SILLY IDEA to think that if your tribe wins then the festival is prestigious but if you loose its no longer prestigious. It is CEBU’S TIME for now, I hope we will respect their victory as they respected ILONGGO’S VICTORY on 03′, 04′, 05′. WE ARE ALL FILIPINOS, LET US JUST REMAIN HAPPY AND PROUD OF OUR RICH FILIPINO CULTURE!
kuddos to ILONGGOS & CEBUANOS

That’s what you call a real winning streak, ILOILO’s real winning streak. If all of Iloilo’s Festivals will join Aliwan, i bet Iloilo will dominate the winner’s list. Beat that!
——————————————
WOW!!!! Very Nice!!!!
SINULOG will always be the BIGGEST FESTIVAL in the COUNTRY that even ALIWAN cant beat the record breaking number of 52 CONTINGENTS, 40+ FLOATS, 50+ PUPEETEERS AND HIGANTES, more than 5000 people are registered for photo contest, over 50 documetary videos etc… Whats nice about ALIWAN is it SHOWCASES the best of the best in all festivals across the country. But ALIWAN is just a newbie, it would take time for ORGANIZERS to match SINULOG FESTIVAL. Simply the biggest in the country and in asia pacfic.
to ARIANNE:
Nobody is blaming Cebu and Sinulog! It is the Cebuanos who are feeling sensitive everytime someone will say that Dinagyang had a better performance than Sinulog in Aliwan 2006-2008.
Be realistic Arianne, be happy for your festival’s win. If Ilonggos and other Dinagyang lovers say that Dinagyang was better, just leave us and enjoy your win. If Cebuanos will keep on reacting to our clamor, it only means that our claims are justified.
to ARIANNE:
Yes Arianne, please do that too… the more people clamoring to the organizers, the more they will become aware about their terrible handling of the Aliwan…
I hope you understood my points about the criteria and the way the Aliwan was organized.
Peace out Cebu and Ioilo.
