And who ordered the closure of the Manila Airport Road Rotonda?

Posted on June 2, 2008

I just arrived here in Manila at around lunch time today. And since I flew via Cebu Pacific, I landed at the Manila domestic airport. This is my first time to land at the domestic airport since, I normally fly in or out of Manila at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2.

Right after leaving the Domestic Airport gates, we were supposed to take a right turn going at the Airport road, then turn left at the gas station in Tramo. But to my horror, all U turn slots in airport road is closed!

From the airport, you cannot turn left at the Domestic Road rotunda going to Baclaran, or take a right turn going to Tramo. You will need to drive all the way to the mothballed NAIA Terminal 3 at the Villamor Airbase!

Whoever planned this project must be an idiot. From the airport going to my office in Paseo de Roxas Makati now has a price tag of 140 Pesos. That much much higher than the usual less-than-a-hundred fare I give to cab drivers.

They should also understand that the gas prices are steadily increasing each day and the drivers need to shell out more pesos for their gas, which leads to lower daily income. And the passengers too and inconvenienced. Imagine travelling all the way to Villamor Airbase just to make a U turn before going back to Tramo then exit in EDSA.

I hope the implementing agencies should reconsider closing the U turn slots of the Manila Airport Domestic Road for the benefit of the travelling passengers as well as to the drivers.

Just a suggestion though, before doing anything with the traffic flow, why not implement a street-lighting project at the Domestic road. I pass by there from time to time to get my plane tickets and it is just so dark there. And to think that passengers of the Domestic Airport Terminal pass through this strip of highway.

I think the traffic plan is a good one. It has definitely eased the traffic around the area. Would you rather spend 20 minutes trying to get to EDSA or spend 5 minutes doing the turnaround? Now if they can just step up the enforcement of the no U-turn zones!

I’ve experience this myself on a sunday. “Idiot” is an understatement.
