Tacloban Leyte Sangyaw Festival 2008 list of winners

Posted by Enrico Dee on June 30, 2008

The newly-revived Sangyaw Festival of Tacloban City is fnally over and I’m now back here in Manila. The results are in, but I honestly doubt the scorecards. I am not sure if it’s just me or the other also noted something, too. This year’s Sangyaw Festival Champion is Tribu Kabatok of Tacloban City.

Pintados Kasadyaan Sangyaw Festival 002
Trivu Kabatok, Tacloban City

I have seen the streetdance performance and the final performance of all the contingents and I can’t believe that Tribu Kabatok won the contest. I have never even imagined that Lumad Basakanon would lost in this Tacloban Fiesta.

I have seen Lumad Basakanon perform several times and I must admit that their costumes always look the same year after year. There are segments of their choreography that is being repeated year after year.

Lumad Basakanon, Cebu Sinulog Festival

Despite the fact that their costume looks the same and their choreography, recycled, as some woud say I still liked their performance yesterday compared to the other groups. Lumad Basakanon’s performance yesterday was not even that solid compared to their routine last Aliwan Fiesta 2008. But that doesn’t mean they should not win. In fact I am very much familiar with the Basakanon signature routine but it still has the magic to keep me awed all the time.

many people were disappointed because the grand presentation was not open for public. i got some reactions of people who came from far places of the country like cebu, manila, and davao just to witness the festival. however, they ended up frustrated and disappointed because they were not allowed to enter the balyuan park. it seemed that the festival was only organized for people who belong to the upper class and some political clans. i just hope the organizers will the people’s feedback as bases for improvement in the years to come.

the event is open to the public, contrary to what you are saying. it is just that, the balyuan amphitheatre was easily filled up even before the streetdance started so the security personel closed the gates. and besides the streetdance which is 3.5 kilometers long also has designated judging areas. which means that the performances you get to see in balyuan is the same performance you will see at the judging areas in the street. there were actually 3 judging areas in the street + the balyuan park.

The sangyaw festival was in chaos and not organized. because of political reasons, the City revived the Sangyaw festival. The Pintados-kasadyaan festival of festivals was moved on the 27 of june and got 19 contingents while the Sangyaw has only 6 contingent on the 29. People were not allowed to enter due to the capacity of the amphitheater. The province owns the Tacloban Sports Complex and the RTR plaza while the City owns the Balyuan Park and the Astrodome.
Therefore, Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival was organized than the Sangyaw festival…

  6. Gloria Karlos says:

all i can say, that was rather a POLITICAL MARCH than a parade of festivals.

  7. jack ass says:

    you said it right!

  8. Gloria Karlos says:

i could’t bear the scenario during the parade. bayani fernando were distributing leaflets of his profile to the people, bongbong marcos diverting the attention of the crowd by corssing the roads while shaking hands with the people, imelda marcos walking down the streets sorounded with body guards and mediamen, kokoy romualdez throwing apples to the people as if feeding chickens, cristina gonzales dancing and while shaking hands, the staff of jojo binay raising their yellow t-shirt like flag…and many more! people’s attention were diverted to them because they were almost covering and occupying the entire street during the POLITICAL MARCH!

  9. den says:

maski ako nagulat din sa result! expect ko na nga na Lumad ang mananalo eh ‘ndi pa pala…

  10. lumadog says:

malinaw ang mata ng judges.totoo natalo ang lumad.tsk.what a shame from 3peat aliwan champion.

  11. lumadog says:

ginaya kasi ang panyo at change custome sa ibang festival..may 1 million na..at hindi nakuntento..yan tuloy nasira ang record.kawawa.

  12. arianne says:

SANGYAW fesival is just a newbie. It wont affect LUMAD’S WINNING STREAK. There is a homecourt advantage in every contest. Im sure people werent so impressed about the results, but thats ok. SANGYAW means worship thus the main point of LUMAD is to show how CEBUANOS worship to SR. STO NINO. Sangyaw festival has bad feedbacks so far, i hope they will be more organized next year. Its a long way to go for them to match SINULOG.

  16. gean lester says:

judge nieras from aliwan defended his scorecards by saying that…tribu lumad should have created a new concept..festivals are a competition of ideas and creativity not merely routine..
