DAVAO CITY, July 11 (PNA) — All systems go for this year’s “Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan” (street dancing), one of the highlights of the 23rd “Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival”, the mother of all festivals here, said City Councilor Edgar R. Ibuyan, chairman of the “Indak-Indak” committee since 2003.

“Indak-Indak” is a crowd-drawer since the spectators are treated with a very enjoyable synchronized street dancing among a number of dancers dressed in a particular cultural group they are representing.

Ibuyan said this year’s competition that will be held on August 23, include the Open Category where various groups all over Mindanao are invited. There are also the Davao City-Based Category and Davao City Indigenous Peoples Non-Competing Category.

Top three winners of the Davao City-Based Category will each receive P100,000 and a chance to qualify the Open Category whose champion will pocket P300,000, 1st runner-up with P200,000 and second runner-up with P100,000.

Each group of the Davao City Indigenous Peoples Non-Competing Category will receive a P30,000 subsidy and another P5,000 during the performance proper.

There are 10 different tribes–Uvu Manuvu, Ata, Tagabawa, K’lata, Sama, Maranao, Maguindanao, Tausug, and Kalagan– that will vie for this category.

Ibuyan said invitations were already sent to 15 Davao City-based contingents as well as to 17 out-of-town expected participants like Tagum City, Parang and Shariff Aguak in Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, Kidapawan in North Cotabato, Surigao del Norte, Lake Sebu in South Cotabato, Shariff Kabunsuan, Magsaysay in Davao del Sur, Manay in Davao Oriental, and Matalam in North Cotabato.

The deadline for the submission of official entry form, storyline/synopsis or brief description of the festival to showcase, and complete list of names of the official delegates with their ages, roles or functions will be on August 11.

On the same day, a briefing of all representatives of all contingents will be held at the Violet Room, 3rd Floor, Sangguniang Panlungsod Building, Davao City. (PNA)

Thank you for sharing this information, I hope to see more photos of this beautiful festival. Cultural traditions are one of the most powerful mechanisms indigenous peoples have in the face of ongoing imperial and colonial pressures.
