Villamonte disqualified to join Bacolod Masskara 2008
Posted on August 29, 2008
This is probably one of the heartbreaking news I’ve heard this week. Former Grandslam Champion Barangay Villamonte won’t be able to compete this Masskara 2008.
I have been looking forward to seeing them perform this year when I first learned about their plan to join again. This news was even confirmed to me by their choreographer Panoy Cabalcar last June 28, 2008 when we met in Tacloban City during the Sangyaw Festival.
I actually heard the Villamonte’s disqualification a few days back but was only able to get the confirmation early this afternoon when one of their dancers confirmed the sad news. According to sources, the team behind Villamonte was not able to submit their registration form before the deadline ended.
Sad indeed, because the defending champion Barangay Alijis, won’t also be seeing action this year. For obvious reasons, their choreographer Panoy Cabalcar is supposed to choreograph Brgy. Villamonte.
It was the contingent from Brgy. Alijis that was sent to Tacloban last June for the Sangyaw Festival. But it was the Brgy. Villamonte who was sent to Shanghai in 2004 for the World Tourism Festival and in 2005 for the Midosoji Festival.
The only strong contender left in the field is the Masskara Dance group from Barangay 23. Although Villamonte will not be competing in the Masskara 2008 streetdance competition, they would still be joining the Bacolod Electric Masskara 2008 streetdance parade.
The Bacolod Electric Masskara Festival is a new innovation that was instituted last year. Unlike the traditional Mssskara Streetdance that we got used to, the Electric Masskara is held at night and dancers uses luminous or lighted costumes and props.
UPDATE: One dancer from Villamonte sent me a text message early today informing me that they will still be competing in the Open Category as Cebuana Villamonte. Their appeal to join the Barangay Category will be decided by the Masskara Organizers this monday.
We’ll keep you posted on this development.

toinks… this will gonna be one of the most unchallenging masskara ever. without any brgy to challenge brgy 23, without alijis, pahanocoy or villamonte? forget it… i not going there this year masskara.
so what kung wala si panoy! cya ba ang masskara!
di naman ah, kung titignan mo last year ang contest, barangay 23 talaga ang dapat nanalo sa open category, anong concept ang meron ang alijis last year. ang sagot ko wala wala wala
he he he he
ahahahay…
haay kabudlay sang mga hisaan, for sure nahdlok lng sila sa villamonte, dont worry, majoin gd ang Villamonte sa Baranggay Category and Open…let us see kun dn gd ang ga putak nga ini

wala na sila na hadlok sa villamonte… wala sila ma hadlok kay panoy. ang insakto nga term dira is, gusto man nila mag champion. pero kis-a daw lain na sang pang hambal nila ang gwa na hisa na.
haay whatever, anyway some of their dancers ra sa villamonte…..and they are so humble ha
watch out for the grand comeback of all time fav. brgy. here in bacolod..
Villamonte tribe! Go go go….
nahadlok cla sa brgy. villamonte kay may gusto pada-on ang city bal-an nyo ang brgy. 23 iya na balyarte ni tita bing.kung sabagay hulata nyo nlang sa performance day kay basi kmu maka judge man kun sin-o gd ang deserving magda-og. do you think kasarang ang iban nga barangay mag-gasto parehos sang gina-gasto sang Villamontehanon? maski wala kmi ya financial aid from tita Bing KASARANG KAMI YA!!!indi lang cla magpaintra sa villamonte kay basi mahuy-an pa ang brgy 23!kag nga-a limitahan nila ang contestants sa 22 lang kay ang BACOLOD may 61 ka barangay?d bla mas sadya kung damo ga compete?nahadlok cla magpaintra sa villamonte kay ilampaso gd cla.padag-on nila ang ila balwarte nga brgy nga ang mga costume daw sa mga LAPAT!makadto sa abroad tsura nila daw mga TRAPO!
I salute Barangay Vilamonte for giving pride to the city of bacolod in both local and international competitions. Masskara Festival is not for mayor bing alone but for the people of bacolod. lets not put politics again in this festival.election is still far away…i was so shocked about this news from my friends here and abroad asking me why limit only to 22 barangays to join the barangay streetdancing when in previous years there were over 30 barangays can join…its this is a free city ? and why limit? I think the best solution was to let all barangays join and if they want to limit?…why not have a pre-judging to make the top 22 into the final list.i hope mayor bing and the organizers thinks about this…Lets not put SHAME to bacolod..LET’S BE FAIR!Let the people of bacolod be the judge. GOOD LUCK BACOLOD! sana ang matamaan wag magalit.
