Former Grandslam Champion Tribu Bola-Bola returns to Dinagyang 2009
Posted by on September 5, 2008
Tribu Bola-Bola of Iloilo National High School will be seeing action again during the Iloilo Dinagyang 2009. This news was confirmed recently in an e-mail by Dinagyang Foundation Chairman Ben Jimena. In fact they are also scheduled to join the Dinagyang Consensus Forum on Sunday September 21.
Tribu Bola Bola has been for their quick split-second precision choreography and eye-catching costume and headress. The pride of Iloilo National High School is also known to be the leader in making innovations in Dinagyang Festival.

They were known to be the first tribe to use platforms or mobile stages. They were also the first group to use beaded bahags with small bells on each strand. Yes, they were literally making noise during the performance. If I am not mistaken they also introduced the use of PVC pipes as a percussion instruments. Now many tribes and festivals from other parts of the country is following this trend.
Last week during the Kadayawan Festival in Davao, I have seen at least two tribes from Mindanao that performed using the PVC Pipes. The contingents from Tampakan, South Cotabato and Suralla, South Cotabato both used PVC pipes as their instrument.
For many Ilonggo?s, Dinagyang can and will never be complete without the Tribu Bola Bola competing. The level of competition is always on its highest once they are on the streets dancing for the Santo Ni?o.
The achievements of Tribu Bola Bola can never be duplicated. They have been the Dinagyang Festival champion for the years 1994, 1996 and 1997. When the contest was split into barangay and open category, Iloilo?s great tribe dominated the open category from 1998 until 2001. The last time they won the grand prize was in 2004.
The group joined the Dinagyang streetdance contest in 2005 and 2006 but was only able to land as 1st runner up.
And now that they?re back, expect nothing but the best Dinagyang Festival 2009 experience this coming January. For sure they will set the standards of performance to a higher level once again.

bola-bola fans are excited to witness another innovative performance next year.thanks eric.
Only had a chance to see Dinagyang once even though I’m always in Iloilo. I plan to be back for Dinagyang 2009.
i know may ngalan na ang bola bola but it will still depend on how good and creative the choreographer is, but sa pagkabalo ko, ara naman sa ilonganon ang nag put sang ngalan sang bola2x sa pedestal…i think maski magbalik sila, i think ndi gd sila big threat…opinion ko lng na ha
no other new tribes joining for dinagyang 2009? I just always see the same tribes every year, i hope to see new tribes joining to put excitement to the festival, coz even dinagyang is still months away people already know the perennial winners. Its either tribu bola-bola-, paghidaet, ilonganon, taga-jaro, san pedro, silak or atub-atub. Only these tribes pull out good performances, other tribes are just so so. Hope to see more dinagyang competitors this 2009 30-40 contingents would be good enough.
pero dinagyang 2009 would be a tough competition, romel flogen will redeem himself after losing the title this year(ilonganon),for paghidaet,i dont know with ramil(paghidaet),for bola bola ga practice as early subong..if they stick with traditional slow moves, they have to think na,better concept and choreography gid ang daog pirmi minus copy paste nga steps sa iban.goodluck next year.

hoy jerome! you think that presentations from sinulgo are not good enough? whoah… kalma ka lang jan tol! kung mas maganda ang dinagayng, bakit hindi nyo natalo basakanon for three years? im not being proud here but remember the judges of aliwan are experts. they know who’s the “best”! anyways, we don’t care of your quick choreography or what. cebuanos just want to offer any dance, as long as it’s a dance, to the holy child. nawawala na nga talaga ang essence ng prayer-dance sa dinagyang. kaya nga hindi pinapanalo ng sto.ni?o sa aliwan…
“Tan said they do not mind spending more than whatever cash award they win in the grand parade because the dance they offer is their way of paying homage to the Sto. Ni?o.”
-news from sinulog
see? nakita mo? i advise you to go to cebu every third week of january and see our parade. may finale ba ang dinagyang? wala ata eh… yan ba ang sinasabi mong hindi maganda? whoah… preno ka muna jan!
choreography doesn’t matter but worship does!!
Actually its not Rommel who brought up Bola2, Its Edwin Duero. He just won because Bola2 has a name already in ILoilo. But hes nt the one who really made a name. I knew all the judges in Aliwan from the Year it started because Im one of the officer there. Not all judges are good enough to provide a better judgement. The dinagyang festival would always stick with the original concept of Ati, that means warriors and tribes competing with each other in celebration of Sto. Nino. We have different cultures and different practices so you can never compare one festival to another. As you all know, the NCCA tagged dinagyang as the Festival of Excellent Folk Choreography. Dinagyang was also awarded by DOT Philippines as the Best Tourist Entertainment for 3 consecutive years and this time, Iloilo will bag that title again.
As you all know the judges in Aliwan Festival, are my colleagues. I knew all of them here in MAnila, some of them are not really that good in judging. You cant please everybody, as you all know. Were not perfect. Were easy to please, we dnt see the other sides of the choreography. What we see is what we got. It doesnt mean that you already won 3 times in a row, ur the best, you have to think always that alls not fair, whether in love or a competition. It always applies. Believe me ive been there.
IT?S a grand slam win for Dinagyang as Best Tourism Event. For the third consecutive year since 2006, Dinagyang makes history when it was adjudged by tourism officials all over the country as the Best Festival in the Chartered City category.
It means Dinagyang is still the BEst and was cited even by the DOT itself and foreigners.
GOOD BYE BOLA BOLA….LABO LABO NA YAN.
Good Bye!!!
hmmmm… i just fall short of my expectation. tribu bola-bola presented something new this year. new in a sense that they showed a more vivid presentation of what really ati and dinagyang are, as a whole. i say more vivid since they have this what we call halo (lizard) and baboy talunon (wild boar) which depict the real ati when they hunt. they have also the magnified dagoy and raha (humabon? im not so sure, almost forgot my local history hehe). i like the way they surprise the spectators through their props(which they made themselves and their visual arts majors in the school for the arts).
maybe the reasons why they wasn’t able to capsize tribu paghidaet are:
and the cartoons are still there ) but then they were not sufficient enough to level that of paghidaet’s. in fairness i admire that drummer of tribu paghidaet who manipulated the instruments which produce different notes like congas, cowbells, and others. he is really skilled. and so as with the drummers and warriors. great number of dancers=great impact.
1: lesser number of instruments and warriors compared to tribu paghidaet. though they have new musical instruments like those congas and cowbells (knew these coz they stored these instruments in my lab
2: costume. i dont know why paghidaet has this eye-catching headress and costume ever. i even approached one paghidaet warrior to buy his headress for 500php and even 1k (just to give to someone as a unique souvenir and agreed to refund me hehe )but he refused, and i understand that they will still have a lots of presentations coming up including aliwan fiesta.
but for me, bola-bola is still the best in terms of concept. Ricmar proved his claim: daugon namon ni sa concept sir! (he is bola-bola’s tribe leader)
Bola-bola gives a whole new side of dance and concept every time they compete at dinagyang. Once again, they gave us the excitement and mesmerized the audience with their innovative style and craftsmanship. They always give color to dinagyang and always brings new and fresh(never seen) idea and choreography to their performance and to dinagyang as a whole. Bola-bola is an “eye catcher”, they are always different, I presume. You can really tell. The music is wonderful, never been heard. They are distinctive and most of all, they perform with “story”, that’s the bottom line. We should consider the fact that dinagyang festival is the reflection of our culture. Judges should keep an eye on how well tribes tell their story through dance and not just formations, quick and solid steppings. But then again everyone has their own judgment. But for me, Bola-bola won. They satisfied me more than anybody else in the ati-ati competition.
Hi guys, you know the way i observe the people who are giving their anomalous comments here they do not know the meaning of Dinagyang or They were not able to witness the actual celebration of Dinagyang. Ang Dinagyang is the Mother Festival of Iloilo it means a merry making ,mardigras or street dancing in Honor of Baby Jesus, walang stage yan kasi street dancing nga at lahat ng festival sa pilipinas at kahit sa buong mundo sa street ng kanikanilang cities ginagawa.Except sinulog mo lang, kaya huwag mo ng itanong bakit sa kalsada.Dinagyang is an Ultimate reflection of Ilonggo Cultures or reflections of our past specifically referring to all ati s or ita s in the Island of panay which is the first inhabitant of the Island, kaya Tribal, secondly may pinta na itim or brown, thirdly may mga tribal ornaments every datu s, thats why may different costumes. And they are using sounds or different tunes and rythms for dancing in order to praise Baby Jesus kaya may drums. Pano nila ibahin kasi yan ang cultura ng panay and they belong in panay island .Advice ko lang ito sa Comments ni sinulog kaya binigyan kita ng background ng Dinagyang at magbasa ka nalang ng history mo,why you are asking bakit “warriors at tribes” palagi ang dinagyang. It means hindi mo talaga alam. Please lang dont give any comments if you do not know the cultures and practices of others. Ang innovation na sinasabi mo it depends in every tribes, how they will do it and dont ask them they are excellent for that.
thats right
