Revisiting Vigan’s Baluarte

Vigan, which was formerly known as Ciudad Fernandina may be known for its heritage district at the Calle Crisologo but as time passes by, new tourist spots have been built around Vigan. Among these is the Baluarte Zoo of former Governor Chavit Singson.

Chavit Singson rose into superstardom status after he became t whistle-blower in an impeachment case against former President Joseph Estrada.

But unknown to many, the house of former Ilocos Sur Governor, has been converted into an open space zoo. People visiting the old and rustic Vigan has also been adding Baluarte into their itineraries. It may be off the City center but not too far away.

Baluarte features various animals where one can enjoy. There are pythons, iguanas, tigers, ostriches, different species of birds, ponies and a whole lot more.

Kids would definitely love this place. They can actually take a horseback ride around the oval. There is also a butterfly park.

When we went there on a Saturday afternoon, there was a show for the kids and kids-at-heart where one can actually have a close encounter with various animals, like snakes, turtles, serpent eagle and a whole lot more.

Kids were all too excited to see a turtle but everyone adults included gasped at the sight of a large Burmese python. The place is so big, we didn?t even finish touring the entire place as the areas appointed for the tigers were at the very far end of the farm.

What I just don?t like is that there are some undisciplined citizens who keep on poking at these animals with their umbrellas, fans and what-have-you, despite the sign not to touch the cages. I hope the zoo keepers and management would implement a stricter policy regarding these kinds of abuses. After all, these animals also get stressed when being poked by human beings.

But all in all the Vigan Baluarte experience is all worth our calesa fare. Baluarte is free of charge and is open daily.

To get to Vigan Baluarte, I would always suggest to take a tricycle from the city plaza. Agree on the fare with the driver before hopping in on the tricycle.

Calesa may be romantic and in the mood for touring Vigan, but I would discourage you from taking it when you go to Baluarte since these Calesa charge you on a per hour basis. And because of that, you might be rushing up things and not enjoying your trip to Baluarte.

@jenny calesa is around P10 per person, P20 is too much, but people often rent out a calesa for an hour ride or so. I pay them aroun P150 for almost two hours of strolling.
