Panay News used my photos without my permission!

This is not the first time that Panay News, a local newspaper based in Iloilo City has used my images without my permission.
Last year, they used one of my photos in their online version. It was also last year when their Ilonggo language paper HUBLAS used two of my photographs which even included the byahilo.com watermarks.
But this year is a different story. They didn’t just 2, but four of my photographs that were taken between Dinagyang 2006 to 2008.
It is really a shame that these tradional media resort to photo grabbing and not even giving credit to the copyright owner. Worse, at least one of these photographs have watermarks removed.
I do not know if these newspaper still has what we call journalistic ethics? Prove to the Ilonggo people that you still hav the credibility as a newspaper.
What you did is plain and simple stealing of photographs which I owned.
I sent Panay News an e-mail, but what have they done? They simply ignored it. Didn’t even bothered to reply. Probably they thought that they can just easily get away with these because they are from the traditional media, and I am just a blogger.
I challenge you Panay News to answer my e-mail demand.

Now how can Panay News explain how did this happen? that my photos landed in their pages without even asking for my permission.
What Panay News did was simply steal my photos and use it for their stories.
Kahuluya sa inyo. Ginakawat nyo lang mga pictures nyo nga gina gamit nyo sa inyo newspaper!
What a shame for a local newspapers and traditional media practitioners to do such act.
I’ll help you out spread the word Eric…kapila na ni nga beses natabu! And the worst part is the EIC is very very knowledgeable about your existence in the website…they should’ve practice media ethics (if there is such thing)…
Your picture is too good enough to be used in the newspaper. Yes, they, should ask for your permission
kung student using for their school work, tolerable pa….but for a newspaper,tsk,tsk…they should know what copyright infringement means.

They should that even it is their online.. It is still our property as photographer and no one should get with out attribution to the owner.
Ay sobrang nakakainis naman kung ganyan! From the get go, it’s flattering, pero naman if they don’t give proper credit, nakakainis naman yun ng sobra. How were you able to know that your shots have been stolen?
Here’s what you do, draft an email letter and post it here. Then ask everybody do cut and paste this email complaint letter and send them to panay’s email address.
Try googling all panay news email address and list it so everyone who read this blog post and is willing to help can just cut and paste the list of emails to their email clients.
Now kung di pa din sumagot, get the URL of the images and put it on your footer area. Ask everybody else do to it also para everytime your page loads, it will also load the image sa footer mo thereby wasting their bandwidth.

You can create an tag sa footer mo and then just use the height and witdh properties to make it 1×1 pixel lang, but in effect, it will load 152kb each time.
Or kung di pa din nadala, try using firefox addon https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/115 and then reload their webpage every 3 seconds. Then leave your computer for 24 hours. This is greate kung may DSL ka sa house.

it took me a year to post my shots online…i know im not a pro but i have some shots which i think “nanakawin” hehehe i hope some newspapers would have the decency to ask permission..its a shame

I can’t believe they do stuff like this!!! and I thought infringement of copyrights was limited to student work (who often don’t know better…not that that’s an excuse) but for professional journalists?!? OMG. yun lang.

Raphael, the print version was published last sunday. I have one copy of the print edition. dinala ko dito sa manila.
copyright issues yan….you have grounds to file a lawsuit.

This insensitive disregard of intellectual property rights is embarrassing, to say the least. After all that you have done for the Ilonggo people, Panay News should be ashamed of their blatant infringement.

Wow I hope that they will not do this again and again. What a shame, they cannot even hire their own photographer and use their own pictures for their magazine!

uh-oh! not again. i just couldn’t understand why there are people who find it hard seeking permission. i remember your post then regarding the abs-cbn thingy, and now, another incident. suggestion idol, why don’t you enable the right click in this site? so they won’t be able to save your photos again and publish it somewhere. i have the html code for it. hehe.
@ryan: the right clicking won’t solve the issue. there are ways to save pictures even if it’s enabled, it would be better to watermark them.

Hay, they should be taught a lesson. Recognizing the source is the most basic thing. Hindi ata sila napukpok ng intellectual property rights issues nung mga estudyante pa sila. Napaka-irresponsible. Tsk Tsk.

hey, I totally support you and I have also posted your complaints on my blog! I am planning to visit their office this week when I have some time after my work, in order to get an explanation from them about why they did this and what they are going to do about it.
It’s truly a shame when they’re supposed to be the first one to know more about copyrights and infringements of any media form.

kausapin mo muna ung management ng panay news bago ka magpacoment ng kon ano2. kon gusto mo ng respeto maibibay nila yan kahit huli na atleast nagmake up sila.ngaun kung panay yong mura mo sa kanila, parang pareho lang na wala ka ring respeto sa kanila. the thing is, dapat magkausap at ma-settle na.

kung ikaw kaya nakawan ng photos, tapos ikaw gagastons ng pamasahe sa eroplano, pagkain, jeepeny and taxi fare sa iloilo.
sinasabi mo lang ito kasi hindi mo nararamdaman ang problema ko bilang isang photographer na ninakawan ng photos at ginamit ng isang dyaryo at di ako kinilala bilang kumuha ng litrato.
kaagi man kami pasalig sang panay news..our school won for their news writing competition but we never recieved their promised trophy..kahuluya..kapila pa kami gin pabalik balik sa office nila..wala gid..here’s another thing we joined again sa news writing competition nila and until now wala pang results kung sino ang nanalo..san ka jan.. news writing yon..
