Latest Aliwan 2009 Festival Update
Posted by on March 14, 2009
MBC is now on high gear as they prepare the 7th edition of the Aliwan Fiesta 2009. Aliwan 2009 is an annual gathering of the country’s best, biggest, loudest and the most colorful festivals in a three-day affair which will culminate with the grand street dance competition.

This year’s Aliwan 2009 is slated APRIL 23-25 2009. There willbe some changes in this year’s Aliwan Fiesta.
Probably the most obvious isd the parade route. During the past year’s The Aliwan Streetdance starts at theQuirino Grandstand and will traverse the Roxas Boulevard until they reach the final judging area at the Aliw Theater. This time, the route has been interchanged so that more people will get to see the country’s best festivals perform.
This year, the parade will start at the Aliw Theater and will wind up at the Quirino Grandstand. The parade will start at 3PM.

Hello Enrico,
Well done and great job for sharing the voices of the people na nangungulit sa website mo. Many people will surely witness the amazing Aliwan festival 2009. Do you have any news if Tribu Kasag is joining? All the best to you and to the rest of the regional contingents.
Thank you!
Xibu
Xibu> i know Kasag is joining the ALiwan, pero wala pa sya sa list ng official participants, and the list is not complete yet.
Jay> i was chatting with a masskara dancer last february when i was in bacolod and they said masskara will not join the aliwan. if ever they will decide to join, they have to change their music to drum beats as it is one of the requirements in Aliwan.
Hi Enrico,
Thank you so much for your reply.

Hello jheyymart,
Good to know that you have good contingents coming to Aliwan this 25th and we are all looking forward to it. The Choreographer of Ibon-Ebon Festival is from Iloilo too. He used those flying effects many years ago in few of the festivals in Iloilo. I am glad that Artist from Iloilo are growing and sharing their skills and artistry there.
All the best!!!

pasensia napoh tao lang nagkakamale….
Hey jheymart,
I understand no worries. Let’s just hope that Aliwan will be successful. But you know, the idea of gathering all the festivals in one is great but to let them compete is not good. Every festival in the country is unique. Hindi man gaano ka bonga or grabe ang steps and costumes, still magkaiba parin. if we are following one theme, ok yan because may puedeng pag basihan kung sino talaga ang the best. You cant fully compare flower festival to the performance of Aetas. or pintados to maria clara. Aliwan is like comparing ivory soap to colgate. Sinulog is totally different from dinagyang. because its a bit slower, elegant and graceful. while dinagyang is fast, wild and the degree of dificulty is quite high. even sa mga musicality ay magkaiba. ang sinulog ay more on drum and bugle ang dinagyang ay walang bugle. But sill both is totally amazing! for sure ang festival nang pampanga ay may sarili ding unique essence. and let’s discuss our thoughts here maturely and may sense. let’s learn from each other, your culture and history. I’m sure we all loved culture and arts in this website. May the best tribe win but let’s not drag each other down because there is no unity on it.
have you experience seeing Aliwan? since when? what is your most favorite group?
Take care!
Xibu
Hello again,
have been to bacolod to witness their masskara festival? you will be amazed by thier costume, props and steps as well but they cant join the Aliwan because they are not using drums. Masskara is one of my favorite festivals in the country.
tnx

tnx powh…
Jheyymart,

Take care!
Xibu

Dude,
Just want to ask kung saan pwede makakuha ng passes for photographers? thanks! sana po makakuha ako. =)
thnaks!
as far as a i know there are no passes issued to photographers to get inside the press box. a media ID is required to get inside the judging area.
hi,
just want to know if lumad basakanon will join aliwan…? tanx more power to ur webssite… i really luv to browse…hhehehhehe festival addict kc ako eh….
Hi Xibu!
Your comment on the diversity and uniquenes of each festival is the most sensible I’ve ever read in this blog, I agree with you 101%. Yeah, lets not drag each other down, its no way to let our country move forward. Instead let’s share and learn from each other.
Enjoy Aliwan 2009 to the max! Leave the in-fighting to those who doesnt know any better…hehehe!
and to jheyymart,
You’re 15, bata ka pa talaga, but hanga ako sa maturity mo.
You apologized quickly after your outburst, thats the quality of a balanced and mature person. Keep browsing on this site and other culture and arts websites, it will broaden your mind on all matters that are worthy to know and understand.
Keep it up!
hi
good luck buyogan festival….
God bless…..

After the Aliwan Festival, Dinagyang will be performing in the International Dance Congress in Intramuros, Manila on April 26.
The event will be a gathering of all international dance groups organized by the National Commission of Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
This is a great development, because it means the international scene has already included Dinagyang as having a good track record that is why we are invited.
Tribu Paghidaet was also invited as guest performer at the Festival of the North in Dagupan slated on April 27.
Dinagyang has also an invitation for to perform during the Independence Day celebration in two cities of the United States of America; New York on June 7 and New Jersey in June 14.

vote po kayu
which of this location will they exactly perform, aliwan theater or quirino grandstand? because last year it was at quirino where they did started the parade but it was just simply a street dance but the performance itself was at aliwan theater. will it be the same this year, or the other way around?
both aliw and quirino are marked as judging areas
IT”S a grand slam win for Dinagyang as Best Tourism Event. For the third consecutive year since 2006, Dinagyang makes history when it was adjudged by tourism officials all over the country as the Best Festival in the Chartered City category.
It means Dinagyang is still the BEst and was cited even by the DOT itself and foreigners.
jam. good for you. but u dnt hve to brag about it. be humble for ur regions achievements.
This is an Aliwan Page(Brought to us by Byahilo). Not Best Tourism Updates!
My bet for aliwan 2009 is
1st. Dinagyang Festival
2nd. Banate, iloilo
3rd. Buyogan Festival, Municipality of Abuyog, Leyte
this is my opinion, No Harm done. Please Respect it!
tnx Mr Enrico Dee for d info’s and updates of ALIWAN ’09.
More Power.
JR. Cebu City Resident.
would like to say thank you to Mr. Enrico Dee
for posting this kind of performance that will be happen in our country..
thanks din sa pag-allow na ibahin ang route ng performance ng mga contingents.
i will miss the Sinulog Festival, Alikaraw Festival, this both team have a great performance
to the aliwan.
to the Dinagyang your team is also the one of the best contingent to beat.
and I’m Glad and watch out for the performance of Lakbayaw Festival of Tondo wish that they will land to at least Runner up or better.
GOOD LUCK LAKBAYAW TRIBU LACSON….
Good Luck to all the contingents..
Mabuhay ang Pinoy!!
Mabuhay ang ALIWAN FIESTA…
Lakbayaw Festival of Tondo is a clone of Iloilo’s Dinagyang. I’ve seen it. I hate to say this, yung tribe na ipapadala is such a “manggagaya”. (watch it in youtube compare it to the performance of tribu paghidaet of 2008) From costume, music, choreo, NO ORIGINALITY…next time magpadala kyo ng tribe na talagang kayo yung nag-isip at nag-conceptualize. yung ORIGINAL ba. Di ba pagnanakaw yun ng concept?..magaling naman kyo Tribu Lacson eh. kailangan nyo lng magconstruct ng ORIGINAL concept. let your own creativity work. (constructive criticism lng to ha?)
Hello Jun Jun,
Don’t worry, in a good side, it means they adore Dinagyang. I admire the Lakbayaw because they dare to follow the tough one. Expect that there will be more festivals will come out like Dinagyang just like Sinulog. there are dozens of festivals looks like Sinulog or one festival looks like the other. May be best tribe win!
All the best!

sinulog was inducted to hall of fame inspite of the ff:
NO CULTURAL RELEVANCE=what is the role of monkeys and bananas to Cebuano culture?
NO HISTORICITY=pintados is indigenous to western visayas it is not from Cebu.
MEDIOCRE PERFORMANCE=repeat movements and dance steps for 3x
NO INNOVATIONS=repeat choreo and style for 3x
NO CREATIVITY=repititive dance steps for 3x
NO SPORTSMANSHIP=conflict with Carmen contingent
ALIWAN FESTIVAL BECAME CONTROVERSIAL BECAUSE OF THESE!!
ed, ur degrading cebuanos from ur statements. Just Answer this straight to the point question? HAVE YOU EVER CHOREOGRAPHED A DANCING CONTINGENT?
MOST PROBABLY, YOUR ANSWER IS “NO”.
BEFORE U MKE SUCH POINTLESS STATEMENTS.
ASK UR SELF FIRST! I’M I CAPABLE OF BRINGING UP A GOOD THEME TO FORMULATE A GOOD AND MEANINGFUL DANCE?
CEBUANOS CELEBRATE SINULOG IN VENERATION TO OUR LOVED HOLY CHILD SR SANTO NINO.
JUST BE CAREFUL OF THE CHOICE OF IDEAS UR TRYING TO IMPLICATE TO THE PUBLIC’S MIND.
UR WAY TOO OUT OF THE PICTURE!
LAST: R U QUESTIONING THE CREDIBILITY OF THE ALIWAN BOARD OF JUDGES?
CONCLUSION: WHAT U R SAYING IS NOT CREDIBLE!
SANA PO MAY LIVE STREAMING PARA NAMAN MA UPDATE KAMI DITO SA PROBINSYA. HUHUHUHUHU
kairyland…. abangan nyo.. I MIGHT do a live webcast para sa mga nasa probinsya at hindi makaka panood live.
really Enrico are you sure of that na mag live webcast ka? eh panu sa Eastern Samar?ramdam mo aabot ba ang pag live webcast mo dun? im just a concern person from eastern samar!
cj i have to double check the third party webcast provider first. but we already agreed that he/she/they will be doing the stream this coming saturday and it will be seen worldwide as long as theres an internet and it can be accessed via byahilo.com
I wish that Cebu’s Sinulog or Lumad Basakanon was not inducted to Hall of Fame. This is because of the following reasons:
1) Sinulog or Lumad will not be seen performing in Aliwan again (unless an exhibition performance is made) and same goes for whoever will be the champion in the succeeding Aliwans. Ergo, less and less festivals will be competing as more contigents are inducted to Hall of Fame status.
2) Excitement in competition will not be eminent since the formidable team to beat which is Lumad is not competing anymore. Therefore, the remaining contigents will not have that much exhilaration to compete since they don’t have the defending champion to beat. There will be no more chance for Lumad to prove their worth again that they are indeed the champion especially to their critics. I belive that, with this year’s improved criteria, Lumad shouldn’t have been inducted to Hall of Fame, hence they should’ve competed.
3)Sinulog or Lumad will not be competing in Aliwan forever, therefore criticisms against Sinulog or Lumad will never be addressed (this year is the best year for them to prove their worth especially with the CCP-conference on streetdance inspired criteria).
I would also suggest that the awards system (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) will be abolished to avoid labelling one festival as inferior to others. Instead, organizers should focus on the individual components of streetdance (choreography, relevance of performance to festival represented, costume, music, blocking, routine originality, etc) that each contigent possess and give awards basing on these components. The number of awards that a contigent will receive shall then serve as the basis of the contigent’s measure of performance.
I hope people will come to think of these suggestions for Aliwan’s improvement.
