Buyogan tops the list of Aliwan Fiesta 2009 Winners

Buyogan Festival of Abuyog Leyte was formally declared as the Aliwan 2009 Champion, besting 20 other festivals from all over the Philippines.

Coming in at second place was the first-timer Kasag Festival of Banate Iloilo. and Second runner up was the Tribu Paghidaet of Iloilo City’s Dinagyang Festival.

The seven runners-up are: Siloy Festival of Alcoy Cebu, Karatong Festival of Dulag Leyte, Ibon-Ebon Festival of Candaba Pampanga, Kalilangan Festival of General Santos City, Kadayawan Festival of Davao City, Lapay Bantigue of Masbate City, and Lambayok Festival of Batangas.

When I first saw Buyogan did a run through of their routine at the Aliw Theater car park a few hours before the show time, I knew they were going to be the festival to beat. And I also knew that Dinagyang will be having a difficult mission of getting the grand prize after seeing them perform both at the Aliw theater and Quirino Grandstand.
I am happy that Kasag won first runner-up. A lot of people were surprised at the performance of Kasag. From a never-heard festival, it has now become the second best festival in Aliwan for this year.
Buyogan’s performance was really amazing. They deserve to win the Aliwan Fiesta title this year. After grabbing the top prize at the Free Interpretation Category of Sinulog 2009, and the Pintados Kasadyaan in Tacloban, I wonder what’s next for Buyogan.
Alcoy Siloy performed the routine which they also showed during the Sinulog 2009. It was a clean execution, but I could have been more happier if Sinulog brought Don Sergio Osmeña National High School, or the Palawod Festival of Bantayan.
But all in all, I am satisfied with the results. Aliwan 2009 was a great show! I am looking forward to the eight edition of Aliwan Fiesta in 2010!

We do not expect much from Paghidaet this Aliwan, its performance was good but not as captivating as last year’s. It lacks the “wow” factor as what Enrico said. Maybe this was due to the separation of the two choreographers who made the 2008 routine,the tandem should have been great, Ramil gave Paghidaet the grace, and the other gave Paghidaet the speed and energy. But what can we do.
When Bola-Bola landed in second place, instead of champion, the Aliwan crown seemed murky. The only hope was Kasag, under the veteran Aliwan choreographer Flugen, who has two Aliwan Championships in his belt (Tribu Atub-Atub and Pintados de Pasi). The Kasag performance was really good.
But had Bola-Bola represented Dinagyang, it could have beaten Abuyog without a doubt. Bola-Bola has the WOW factor which Paghidaet did not have in this year’s performnace. Look for Bola-Bola here in Youtube, type “WVRAA 09 Dinagyang Champion”.
This year CEBU has sent a decent representative for ALIWAN winning 4th place is not bad for the cute kids of ALCOY a 5th class municipality in the southeastern part of CEBU. Next year will be a come back for CEBU hence SINULOG FOUNDATION will surely send a powerful cebuano contingent to represent SINULOG and GOV. GWEN promised to send the champion of PASIGARBO SA SUGBO 2009 to ALIWAN 2010. We hope that u MR. ERIC would witness and cover the bigger and better PASIGARBO SA SUGBO 2010 which is happening on AUGUST as early as now many tribes are already rehearsing for the said event which is a showdown of CEBUANO FESTIVALS atleast 30 Festivals are joining this years pasigarbo sa sugbo 2009 edition.

There was so much thrill & fun watching Aliwan Fiesta 2009 despite of the heavy rains. As one of the “amateur photographers” in the frontline, seeing Buyugan Festival as they showcase their street dance, I believed that this group will land on the top, and they did. As we talked with fellow photographers, we agreed that it is the best show we witnessed that night. Congratulations to the winners!

Aliwan 2009 was definitely bigger and better than the previous ones. The winners of the streetdancing competition are all deserving.
Aliwan 2009 was in smooth flow, spectators were enjoying, until one contigent came: Lakbayaw Festival from Tondo showcased a recycled routine which was copied in its entirity from Tribu Paghidaet’s performance in Aliwan 2008. I condemn them to the meanest way ever for doing that! And for those who are defending Lakbayaw’s act, shame on you!

I already expected that they will not make it to the top. My rage is about a simple fact: Close to 100% ang kinopya nila!
My sentiments are for the Tribu Paghidaet’s choreographers… masakit kasi tanggapin na pagkatapos mo pag-isipan at pag-hirapan ang isang bagay ay kokopyahin lng tpos ipanlalaban ba syo sa parehong patimpalak!
DAPAT ISAMA NILA ORIGINALITY SA CRITERIA NEXT YEAR!
one more thing… dapat isama din pala ung criteria na Relevance of the Performance to the Culture & Way of Life of the Province!
1) Do we see a lot of bees in the Philippines or moreso in Leyte? Never in the records of the DOH did we have cases of bee sting incidents treated in the emergency rooms.
2) Costume styles should depict original local culture… hindi yung cross cultural costumes ang suot.
but generally, the contigents were great. just a few inconsistencies that we have to correct.

Buyogan was expected to win. Even their performance in Sinulog had a big WOW factor.
Hay, naku….yung nangopya, KABAKLAAN yung choreography. Nagaya nga yung Tribu Paghidaet, naging kabaklaan naman yung version nila. but i should say binaboy nila yung choreo. and i felt a sentiment din sa choreographer ng dinagyang tribe. i agree with you Timlibunao, they should put ORIGINALITY sa criteria next time….sa Tribu Paghidaet, or to the next tribe who will represent Dinagyang next year, ok lng you will bring home the bacon soon. just be patient, and continue to awe us with your awesome and spectacular performance. i hope i could witness it myself sa iloilo…

I am more than 100% satisfied with the result. I can sense that even the Ilongo-Dinagyang lovers mostly are satisfied because Buyogan has really a WOW factor! I’ve been trying to convince myself that Paghidaet will win but watching them in Youtube many times they really lack of WOW factor. Their performance is great for stage show. considering their movements which became too fast. Hindi mo na ma appreciate ang performance because its too fast. hindi pang Aliwan ang performance pang Dinagyang festival lang. Do you know that most of the festivals goign to Aliwan are adding something to their performance to meet the demands of Aliwan. Like it should be very festive, colorful, full of surprise, hidden and out of this world props. Yung bang parang nasa wonderland ka… he he he! kaya nowadays, ang mga nananalo ay mga animal inspired performance (bees, crabs, birds… maybe in the future Dino naman). Na bawi ang down feeling nang mga Dinagyang funs nung nanalo ang Tribu kasag. First time palang yan ha 2nd na kaagad. pero they should not use the same thing if ever maka punta ulit sa Aliwan 2010 bec things are changing fast. Tribu Bola bola ang balantayan bec they will surely land on the top sa Dinagyang 2010 and will do best sa Aliwan. I am happy for the Buyogan! But last year the paghidaet should have won talaga kaya ganun nalang ang galit at himutok nang mga Ilongo. Now we are a bit quite ang mga nag rereklamo na mga Ilongo na hindi makatanggap nang pag kakatalo this year ay ewan ko nalang. Kung dinamihan ng kasang nag sailboats at ang costume ay mas grabe, for sure nanalo talaga sila! alam mo naman sa aliwan, they dont mind now kung grabe ang fastness nang movements they like to see visual impacts like Buyogan and other festivals. sa aliwan, kung sa local palang you used hundreds of flowers as props, sa aliwan you need to bring thousands like what basakanon has been doing. sad to say kung ang dinagyang wont do something about it, if we will dwell only sa movements, we will not going to make it na. So we have 1 year to prepare and I know we will innovate. congratulations to all the winners! Sir Enrico two thumbs up to you!

Just like what Sir Eric, comet and xibu posted… ang mga Ilonggo marunong tumanggap ng pagkatalo basta naaayon. Look at this year’s winners… lahat deserving, tahimik lang ang mga Ilonggo at pinupuri pa ang Buyogan! If there are some “Ilonggos” who can’t accept defeat, its a normal reaction… ang importante at the end… nkikita pa rin nila ang mga improvements na kailangan gawin sa Dinagyang.
Kaya tingnan mo ung mga iilang Cebuano dyan na paulit-ulit ang mga posts (ariana, arianne)… wala na ring masabi kasi she finally realized na ang mga Ilonggo na nilalait nya sa pagiging bitter ay tanggap na tanggap ang pagkatalo ngayong taon.
ACCEPTING DEFEAT IS EASY IN A TOUGH COMPETITION WITH STRONG WINNERS, BUT IT ONLY BECOMES HARDER WHEN THE WINNER SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE OBVIOUS LOSER.
Just a piece of info, ang mga taga Sinulog na mismo ang naghusga… recycled nnman ang routines ng Lumad at Carmen kaya hindi pinanalo. Im seeing recycling din sa Buyogan. That’s why I am really hoping that ORIGINALITY will be included sa criteria para mawala na ang issue na recycling sa Aliwan.

It was a very spectacular event! Good job organizers. I think Aliwan festival should be recognized or promoted abroad to attract foreign tourist. I see a future in Aliwan, that one day it would be the Asian counterpart of RIO DE JANEIRO of Brazil. I hope everyone will work together in this event. Lets avoid the mentality of pulling everybodys places down. All of the festivals representing places in the Philippines did a wonderful show. A very unique festival. A fusion of cultures in the country.

Imagine kahit anong mangyari anduon talaga sa top, at im sure marami pa talaga ang magaling na mga contender sa ILOILO DINAGYANG ,Pilipinas ang Mahigpit talaga na kalaban ay ang ILOILO Festivals, and it is really worth as the Best Festival Capital of the Philippines. Ako agree ako at obvious talaga na may points of edge ang buyugan sa iloilo contingent sa ngayun pero ang sa Lumad iwan ha ha ha ha nakakatawa yun , agree ang mga Ilonggo ngayun sa Buyugan na performance pero huwag nyo nang eh repeat yan Buyugan next year at baka tumulad din kayo sa lumad,na 3 years paulit ulit nalang. Ako ay isa ring Ilonggo tanggap ko natalo ang ILoilo sa buyugan ng Leyte at obvious talaga congarats for that leyte? pero ang hindi namin matanggap ang mga aliwan last year na obvious lossers nga at napaka klaro na walang edge sa Dinagyang.

Pero kahit buyugan ganyan din ang performance last year.
Dinagyang is worldclass and spectacular! Very distinct ang music and no repetitive figures in their dancesteps. Syncopated baga kung sa music so you can’t afford to miss every second of its performance. We graced Dinagyang festival in 2008 and truly we validate their claim to be the Best Tourism Event in the Country. For Aliwan Viewers what you usually see in Aliwan is just an excerpt of the Big thing in Iloilo. You cannot help but say Wow, Ohhs and Ahhs as you witness some other tribes which is also in close fight to the declared champion. They never run out of innovations as far as choreography and musicality is concerned. It is already embedded in the Ilonggo system that in their culture,they posses a distinc quality that made them excel in this cultural endeavor. they are the benchmark of festivals in the country. Sa mga illongo, we saludo kami.
Im so happy with the results this year BUYOGAN is just worthy of being the CHAMPION in ALIWAN 2009. Coz we CEBUANOS know how to appreciate a good performance, infact more and more out-of-town contingents are joining SINULOG every year coz they know that SINULOG has fair judging and everyone has a chance of winning may they be from cebu or outside the province. I just dont know why people cant accept the results of previous ALIWAN and they cant seem to get over it, even though they know they cant do anything about it already. LUMAD BASAKANON & SINULOG is already a HALL OF FAMER of ALIWAN being 3x CONSECUTIVE CHAMPION and it can no longer be changed, it is already history and as they say “no one can rewrite history” so u better get over it and try ur luck in the years to come. Although i know its hard to match the footsteps of LUMAD but atleast keep trying. For those who think that ur cheated then its a lame and stupid excuse, we can’t even manipulate our very own SINULOG FESTIVAL how much more other festivals. hehehe anyways congratulations again to the winners specailly to BUYOGAN FESTIVAL choreographed by a good friend of mine MR. You just can’t take it na nabawasan ang limelight ng Cebu sa Aliwan 2009 kaya pati sa victory ng Buyogan from Leyte pilit mo pa ring ikinakabit ang Cebu?
infact more and more out-of-town contingents are joining SINULOG every year –> with more contingents from other places outside of Cebu joining Sinulog, more winners are also from outside Cebu (Sinanduloy from Tangub & Buyogan from Leyte). That’s why Sinulog sent a so-so contigent to Aliwan kasi ung mga champions hindi pwedeng ipadala kc they are not from Cebu hence cannot represent Cebu
coz they know that SINULOG has fair judging and everyone has a chance of winning may they be from cebu or outside the province –> that’s true, Sinulog has fair & just judges kaya nga hindi nanalo ang Lumad & Carmen kasi nakita nila na puro recycled ang routines. naswertehan lang din ang Buyogan kasi minor parts lang ng routine nila ang recycled din.

BUT THE FACT STILL REMAINS: LUMAD BASAKANON, THOUGH EXCELLENT IN CHOREOGRAPHY AND ROUTINES, CAPTURED THE ALIWAN CROWN THREE TIMES IN A ROW UTILIZING RECYCLED ROUTINES(50% or even more)FROM THE PREVIOUS YEARS. AT LUMAD BASAKANON LANG ANG NAG-IISANG NANALO SA ALIWAN NA HINDI NAGING KATANGGAP SA MARAMI DAHIL SA PAULIT-ULIT NA CONCEPTS. (If only concepts & routines were not recycled during their win, then people should not have clamored. This is not to discredit Lumad, just pointing out their flaws that can make them better)

Important things to point:
Ariana: pls. check your subject, predicate & verb agreements, they don’t seem to jive.
Aliwan Organizers: pls. inlcude ORIGINALITY in your criteria next year to avoid copying and recycling of routines. The local culture & way of life of a contingent should at least be verified to avoid presentations imaginary concepts (are bees really that common in Leyte?)… since the Aliwan winner for street dance will represent the Philippines in the Int’l Street Theater Festival, a credible presentation of Filipino culture must be maintained.
Buyogan: Minor similarities in concept were seen in your 2008 & 2009 performances. Nevertheless, despite the few repetitions this year, a great majority of your routines were awesome. I hope that you will present an entirely different concept next year to avoid labels of recycling. Learn from the past and make your wins credible.
Dinagyang: A culturally adept presentation with a simple presentation of a storyline will make your perfomance superb. 5 mins in Aliwan is too short to let out all important elements in a presentation, so be sure to include & execute them properly.

I love ur comment point by point talaga it just shows how bitter u r. Like i told u get over it, no matter how much u post ur grievances here u cant already change the fact that we are already HALL OF FAMERS. What i suggest u to do is to create a DINAGYNANG DANCE COMPANY composing of the best dancers and choreographed by ur best choreographers and start practicing as early as now for ALIWAN 2010. Just like rio’s carnival they prepare for one year to ensure that they win. I think that’s what u have to do since i know it would be a tough fight next year coz every contingents wants to represent the Philippines in Int’l Street Theater Festival. Next year will be a comeback of powerhouse contingents from CEBU. I also read in forums that camiguin and surigao will be joining im sure they would send good contingents as well. Lets just hope for the best of our festivals!

We dont put up this festival to prove something, being the festival capital of the Philippines we are just showing the variety of cultures and talents here in cebu and promoting unity between our leaders here. Pasigarbo is a big event and the Festival with the highest prizes. Gov. gwen just failed to send PALAWOD in ALIWAN coz CEBU PROVINCE spent a lot in hosting ONE VISAYAS EXPO. The winner f this upcoming PASIGARBO will surely be sent in ALIWAN
