Buyogan Festival of Abuyog Leyte was formally declared as the Aliwan 2009 Champion, besting 20 other festivals from all over the Philippines.

Coming in at second place was the first-timer Kasag Festival of Banate Iloilo. and Second runner up was the Tribu Paghidaet of Iloilo City’s Dinagyang Festival.

The seven runners-up are: Siloy Festival of Alcoy Cebu, Karatong Festival of Dulag Leyte, Ibon-Ebon Festival of Candaba Pampanga, Kalilangan Festival of General Santos City, Kadayawan Festival of Davao City, Lapay Bantigue of Masbate City, and Lambayok Festival of Batangas.

When I first saw Buyogan did a run through of their routine at the Aliw Theater car park a few hours before the show time, I knew they were going to be the festival to beat. And I also knew that Dinagyang will be having a difficult mission of getting the grand prize after seeing them perform both at the Aliw theater and Quirino Grandstand.

I am happy that Kasag won first runner-up. A lot of people were surprised at the performance of Kasag. From a never-heard festival, it has now become the second best festival in Aliwan for this year.

Buyogan’s performance was really amazing. They deserve to win the Aliwan Fiesta title this year. After grabbing the top prize at the Free Interpretation Category of Sinulog 2009, and the Pintados Kasadyaan in Tacloban, I wonder what’s next for Buyogan.

Alcoy Siloy performed the routine which they also showed during the Sinulog 2009. It was a clean execution, but I could have been more happier if Sinulog brought Don Sergio Osmeña National High School, or the Palawod Festival of Bantayan.

But all in all, I am satisfied with the results. Aliwan 2009 was a great show! I am looking forward to the eight edition of Aliwan Fiesta in 2010!

Many, Many thanks to Susan Arcega of MBC!

    Ariana,

You should love my comments because I do a point by point emphasis with credible information included in it. I do not spam just for the sake of consoling myself. Kindly read your reply to my post again, they are all out of context to what I posted earlier.

I would suggest you use a dictionary, moreso a thesaurus so that you can look the meaning and synonym of the word bitter. A quick grammar lesson would also be helpful for you so that your comments will be pleasant to read the next time around. BITTER… you have been using this word for three years without actually realizing that it is you who is bitter and not the Ilonggos. Ilonggos accepted the Aliwan results this year, being bitter entails one to be unsatisfied all through out regardless of the circumstances.

Who cares if Lumad was awarded the Hall of Fame anyway… the thing is, Lumad will not have the chance to compete in the Int’l Street Theater Festival because it is not legible to join Aliwan anymore. Bottomline is: it was Aliwan itself who inducted Lumad to Hall of Fame, ergo it was Aliwan too who prevented Lumad from having the chance to perform in the Int’l Street Theater Festival. CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE GETTING THR HALL OF FAME AWARD.

To say that you are the FESTIVAL CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES means that either you were given that award or you have already proven something by winning awards and citations. Spending millions in your festivals does not assure you of that title.

You are also full of inconsistencies… i thought you said in your posts last year that Cebu’s economy is progressive… then how come Cebu cannot spend for a contigent like Palawod who can bring so much glory to Cebu?

…and please Ariana, refrain from posting in English if you cannot stand up for it. Your grammar really sucks.

…and you know what…. eat up all your schemes, you are so full of crap and your brain is so full of trash you are not even aware its already consuming you well being.

    ONCE AND FOR ALL ARIANA:
    1) have a grammar and spell check in your posts
    2) refrain from posting comments that are out of context
    3) check your sources everytime you post information; be credible
    4) fish out compliments from others, do not fish for yourself
    5) stop assuming different identities for the sake of posting comments, you are already busted
    6) stop using pseudonyms, stand up by your comments by using your real name

ANG NAGING KAPALARAN NG CEBU FESTIVAL NGAYONG 2009:

    1) Napahiya sa Sinulog, sarili nilang mga contingents tinalo pa ng Sinanduloy from Misamis & Buyogan from Leyte.

    2) Lumad & Carmen, 2 of their great contingents in Aliwan 2008 were not declared winners because of recycled routines.

    3) Conflicts between Osmena & Carmen, Alcoy was sen to Aliwan despite the so-so performance

    4) Lumad inducted in the Aliwan Hall of Fame, cant perform in Aliwan & in the Int’l Street Theater Festival

    5) Conflicts within Sinulog resulted to a less funding & support for the contigents, only one contingent was sent.

    6) No float represented Cebu.

    7) Cebu had the grandest entries in Aliwan 2008, what happened to 2009? 10th place!

–> a good consolation came when Miss Sinulog won as Aliwan Fiesta Queen 2009!

Consistently placing in the top three is better than winning three times in a row then followed by a 10th place.

    THE BOTTOMLINE IS:

pag ang taga-Cebu may binato sa Ilonggo, siguradong may balik na sagot na matino at may basis.

pag ang taga-Iloilo na ang tumira sa Cebuano, walang nang maisagot..

tpos biglang sasagot ng progress, millions in funds & tourists…

ang layo ng sagot d ba….

TRULY, A MAN WHO CANNOT ELABORATE HIMSELF IN A GIVEN ISSUE TENDS TO DIVERT TO ANOTHER…

accept the fact: hindi man naging champion ang Iloilo contingents sa Aliwan, nsa amin nman ang LIMELIGHT!

FYI, ang Dinagyang, 1970 palang may tribe competitions na until it became Iloilo’s official festival in 1970. Sinulog started in 1980 and became officially Ceby’s grandest festival the year after.

Well! well! as i am expecting! The most consistent na nanalo is iloilo… mo need futher explanation…Kahit ciguro sa next na aliwan maging 10th place wala na dapat question sa galing ng mga ilonggo..Anywany would like to clear na hindi ako ilonggo..Pero nasubaybayan ko ang ilonggo dinagyang kahit noon pa na wla pang Aliwan Fiesta…They perform all over the world, with standing ovation….nakita ko kung paano sila nanalo sa Asia – ng Folk dance competition… Cebu and iloilo are the Two most progressive city and the best in visayas…Natatawa ako minsan na may mga mang-mang na tagalog na nagsasabi na ang visaya = “katulong” – what these two showcases in aliwan mirrors kung gaano sila ka makapangyarihan… Congrats!

the set of criteria implemented this year for the aliwan fiesta’s festival dance competition is outlined in detail in the official website http://www.aliwanfiesta.com.ph very clearly, it states under choreography – “creativity and artistry of movement patterns”. by its very definition, creativity implies originality. to create is to originate something.

however, mastery, coordination, synchronicity and precision of performance have always constituted a big chunk of the score. sa tagalog, dapat “malinis” ang execution.

and in the judges’ own words, lumad’s routine was always the cleanest. paghidaet choreographers even had the benefit of a dance workshop last year from one of the judges, months prior to the competition, which apparently did not find fruition in their 2008 presentation.

therein lie the biggest factors, apart from the thematic interpretation which must truly represent regional culture and tradition.

honeybee farming is now major agricultural industry, in case some of the bloggers on your forum are unaware. the folkloric content invoked by buyogan was genuine — that’s how their town got its name, by the way.

by the way, it was also clear, that the 2010 winner will not necessarily be the delegation sent tot he street tehater festival. for all we know,it might be the dancers of buganda – who did the opening number – as they even performed in the olympics already.

as to lakbayaw – they committed an even graver mistake by going up the stage to receive the runner-up trophy which was meant for the lambayok festival of san juan, batangas. marvin agustin’s spiel very clearly called out the batanguenos, pero bakit ang umakyat yung mga taga-Tondo? this is being resolved by mbc at present.

    Hello Nicole,

Thank you for a very nice comments, we need those kind of views so that we can learn and discover more. I would love to attend in that workshop you are mentioning about precision and synchronicity. Yes, I totally agree that Lumad’s performance will always catch the judges eyes because of it’s synchronicity and precision. I saw some issues about that in Paghidaet’s tribe. But You will not expect in the whole performance of Dinagyang many unison steps, it may be a little bit but dinagyang is more on canons and a lot of things (movements) happening at the same time. It is not as solid as Sinulog in general. I should say, we really can’t compare dinagyang type of perforamance to Sinulog type of perforamance because it’s totally different. In many aspects its the same but technically speaking each one has its own style. Have you tried watching Dinagyang festival personally? If they will dance like other festival it won’t be dinagyang anymore. If sinulog will dance like Dinagyang it will not be sinulog anymore because sinulog is more on elegance, flowless synchronized movements and fantastic costumes and props while dinagyang is fast, wild, and the steps are more than 50% different. dinagyang won’t be dinagyang if for the entire perforamance they will be handling props such as flowers, baskets, plants, animals…etc. dinagyang focuses on skills ang agelity depicted in dance. This year I agree that paghidaet’s performance is not really that good. But Last year they could be the winner.
Keep on sharing your cultural thoughts I love it!

    All the best!

    Xibu

hey, maganda talaga ung buyogan. nakita ko sa youtube. lets accept it. im from Iloilo nga pala. wehehe! well, kitang-kita naman eh. maganda talaga yung costume nila. maraming mali yung tribu kasag tsaka paghidaet. sa sobrang arte at bilis3x ng choreography, hindi mo na makikita kung ano na ba yun. korek? di mo na ma appreciate ung movements. sus, kanugon! over na sa bilis.

  12. Tone says:

is it really fast just to be within the time limit?

  13. Commnetator says:

Uhm, as I have read the comments above, I really sense some sour losers with the commentors above. I give my KUDOS to you Nicole for sucha good comment.

About Buyogan, they truly deserve to win. Though some people may say that the routine was somewhat “recycled”, at least it’s still original. Original meaning “not copied”. I even sense that the Kasag Festival of Ilo-ilo copied the costume of Palawod Festival. Victor Cuenco, Buyogan’s Choreographer, hails from Cebu. He is one of the Board members of the Sinulog Foundation. No wonder Cebu has not sent a better contingent.

Yes, Cebu has failed to send its greatest contingents to the Aliwan. But look, why does the Buyogan Festival have the Sto. Niño as the main essence of their dance? Wasn’t it not about the concept that the Sinulog has already been parading?

Siloy Festival in not tenth place, for everybody’s information. As from sources gained, Siloy Festival won the Fourth Place. To think, these dancers were all children and they immediately landed on the fourth spot! Good job Alcoyanons! Next point, Siloy Festival was just also even fourth place in Sinulog 2009. If Sinulog foundation sent the contingent from Don Sergio Osmeña Sr., well then Cebu could have landed on the higher spot.
