The Pintaflores festival was a result of people’s search for its identity and its effort to carve its name in the festival/tourism scene.
Bacolod has its Masskara Festival, the southern City of Kabankalan in Negros Occidental has its Sinulog Festival which is even older than the Cebu Sinulog and Iloilo has its Dinagyang.
San Carlos City wanted to create a name for itself. Something thay they can be truly proud of. Something that they can share to the rest of the country and to the world.
Pintaflores was established in 1993 after combining to city events: the Nabingkalan Tattoo Festival and the Dances of Flowers. Pinta refers to the tattoo marks on the dancers costumes and faces while Flores refers to the flowers. The beautiful costume and props carried by the street dancers all over the city.
Nabingkalan was the old name of San Carlos City, named after Nabingkal, a beautiful daughter of a barrio chieftain.
The Pintaflores normally has 2 parts, the streetdance competition where the groups would dance around the city streets around noontime and then Pintaflores Dance Ritual Competition which is held in the San Carlos City Gymnasium later in the afternoon.
During the Ritual Competition the groups present a routine where they portray the victory of good over evil with the help of the city patron saint, San Carlos Borromeo.
The contest is also divided into 2 categories, the PintaBata Contest and the “Convergence of Negros Festival” The PintaBata is joined by the youth from various barangays and schools in San Carlos City, while the “Convergence of Negros” is participated by the festivals from various towns and cities from Negros Occidental and Oriental Negros.
This year’s Pintabata Category Champion is scheduled to perform at the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly on December 4, 2009 in Roxas City. The local government of San Carlos will then form a new group that will be joining the Cebu Sinulog 2010 contest. I am hoping that they will be on the top 5 again!
